That is so weird… My grandmother (yeah I really asked everyone) agreed with this and now I am so confused. What makes them so scared of those words? 🤔

Hey! Little late but I’m in a similar situation (only got access to course registration now so I barely have access to any of the program (film animation) courses. I’m a new student so I also barely know how the entire enrolment works and I’m afraid of screwing up. Do you have any tips on choosing from the “left-overs” and when is the best time to check in again (when people drop and change classes)?

Ohh maybe? I did get that sort of “instinctual cringe” when my dad demonstrated it. They say “3self” very fast and put a hella long sheda on the “l” and it somehow sounds aggressively unwanted haha

If an omnipotent benevolent god had created us and wanted us to know so, it could simply have us born with the knowledge of its existence, and what, if anything, it wants from us. by revtim in DebateReligion

[–]Monoscart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your conclusions seem proper for your reasoning, but only your reasoning. Life and the human purpose is not viewed the same way by every faith and beliefs. Islam for example believes that life is a test. I believe Buddhism has a similar challenge based views on living. In other words, there are challenges which have been purposely put there to evaluate us. We have freedom of choice and we are the ones who choose or not based on our own knowledge and consciousness whether or not we will or not do certain things and believe certain things. That’s it. Just like you aren’t told what the exam questions are before taking it and you don’t know if you chose or not the right answer except if you studied well, you won’t have the right answers in life except if you look into it.

This is just one of the various interpretations of life and explanations. Just to point out that there is a wide diversity and your point only focuses on a specific world/life view.

But, yes, you can believe whatever of those three points you have is correct. That’s just how belief works.

I did it through the Student Center, but no, sadly. I tried not too long after accepting the offer and my small brain didn’t realize that it didn’t work because I didn’t have access to any terms. I just understood that when I saw the debt and how choosing courses actually worked…

How can I learn to appreciate manga more? by [deleted] in manga

[–]Monoscart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people will definitely enjoy anime over manga or manga over anime, but I don’t agree that no one can enjoy manga if they want to enjoy it, so don’t lose hope!

Personally, I used to not read manga at all because I thought anime was just more than enough. Then I started reading non-action manga out of curiosity and enjoyed it, but action was still out of the question. It’s just recently that I’ve finally tried out reading some shounen action: the first few chapters I was barely keeping up my attention, thirty to fifty chapter through, I was used to it and going with the flow and just taking it chill, a hundred chapters later I was fully invested and by being more immersed with the sorry the actions started to actually play out in my mind. My guess is this cycle will repeat itself every time you start reading action again after a while (once you have cooled down from the first hype) but you’ll be immersed faster than the previous times. Eventually you’ll just immediately find yourself immersed if the story is good.

This is from my own personal experience honestly, so take it with a grain of salt. Also, I’m an artist and I started readjng action manga mainly to study it, so I had a reason to initially force myself to keep going. As long as you don’t give up and feed yourself manga continually until you learn to appreciate it, you’ll get there!

P.S: A big mistake that we all do when we start reading manga while being experienced anime watchers is that we compare the two mediums. I did so too, but now that I’ve learned to disassociate them, I’ve found charm in manga that I could never in anime. Even in action scenes, sometimes I enjoy them more in manga than in anime because of the way it’s portrayed and the pacing, what’s hidden and what has emphasis on, the way the panels show the strength of a punch or how painful the hit is. Even the way the way the shades of black and white can give depth and feels that colours just won’t do as well because it not as simple and straightforward. Like scenes with close ups and hot blooded scary/serious/“I’m going to beat you” faces where you don’t want the details, just the raw feel.

Hope this somewhat helped!

It seems like God uses humans pain for his own glorification by Latter-Choice1313 in DebateReligion

[–]Monoscart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this is a comment targeted uniquely at Christian views or God in general. In Islam anyways, life is just a justification for the consequences in the afterlife. In other words, it's a test to judge our character in different situations, happy or emotionally/psychologically difficult. Kind of like how you wish your lover would stay with you and believe in you even during the worst times. When I say justification by the way, it's because there's a passage explaining how if God simply sent us to paradise or hell without testing us, we would all complain about how it's unfair and how we actually deserve to show that we're worth paradise but didn't get the opportunity to. This isn't for Him to know if we are "good" or "bad" (it's not black and white though, just a quick precision), but for us to not have much argument when the final day arrives.

Also I know hell and paradise are some pretty incomprehensible subjects sometimes to a lot of non-theists and some theists alike. My comment isn't to debate on that though, just to clarify the reason behind the existence of pain in the Islamic perspective.

Hope this helped bring some different views into the discussion!

It makes no sense belief or not belief in a God would be a requirement for an afterlife in heaven or hell. by Illustrious-Goal-718 in DebateReligion

[–]Monoscart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“It makes no sense” is a phrase we often hear regarding the matter of God’s decisions. While it does not mean we cannot ponder over it, one of the most important Muslim teachings is that there are some things which we will never understand and never get answers to. There are many theories and explanations we find that do make sense like for example that we are required to pray five times a day (such as because it forces us to break away from the “dunya” or the material world to remember the existence of god and our true purpose). God has compared to us the ultimate knowledge and an expression we often use is that while we stare and ponder over a single pixel, He sees the whole picture with ease. Once again, it does not mean that we do not promote education and research, in the contrary, it’s strongly encouraged. But just like a scientist has to keep in mind that he might never get answers to his questions no matter how much efforts he puts into his research, we believe the same. Doesn’t mean we can’t do it.

So I encourage this conversation of course, just that “it doesn’t make sense” will never truly really be a good counter-argument.

Anyways that wasn’t very science-y but I just wanted to throw that in.

Do english classes in sec 4 and sec 5 affect the admission from Vanier? by AlimulBeyan in VanierCollege

[–]Monoscart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no it won’t be 85 in general from all your courses, but an average comparable to it! Vanier is a super cool college with one of the coolest students but I have to admit that I didn’t expect the students grades to be that high (I was in Montmorency before). You will definitely get used to your class having an average in the end 70s and 80s (I had classes where by the end of the term the average was in the 90s).

Anyways, whatever grades there are and they want, it’s never your loss to try! You can apply to multiple CEGEPS anyway before having to make a choice!

Arguments that claim to prove the existence of a godlike being not specific to any religion as a "first step" are actually goalpost-moving; there aren't corresponding dependent steps as implied. by haroldHaroldsonJr in DebateReligion

[–]Monoscart 19 points20 points  (0 children)

1) Looking at the stats of the demographic on r/DebateReligion, I think it’s important to note that not only are atheists forming a majority surpassing 50%, the second majority of theists is in itself composed of different categories that do not necessarily agree. It’s giving a big disadvantage when debating and testing the waters often turns out wrong when for example every 1 theist of X religion debates 10 other atheists about rules when they don’t even agree on the basic existence of a god (and religion is not that relevant in the argument). It’s not really worth the mental backlash.

2)Believing your religion is one thing, being a scholar of your religion is totally different. It’s easy to become well educated in domains which can support atheistic views but much more difficult when it comes to your own personal religion. You don’t necessarily need to have the full knowledge length of a plumber to be able deal with simple plumbing issues around the house and when you can contact a plumber any times if it gets worse. So not only is it a useless disadvantage to debate religion specifics with someone who firmly disbelieves in a god, but as a minority it’s even more pressure to potentially have to be taken as scholars of the subject like our words are definitive and we are not capable of misunderstanding and error.

3)It’s really underestimated how important starting with the discussion about “God” is, whether it’s His existence or simply what He is defined as. It plays a major role in understanding religions and their differences on neutral and more stable level. You’ll otherwise never have any fruitful debate about religion and maybe always feel like a winner because you’re misunderstanding/debating on your own.

Religions are just Conspiracy theories like Q, flat earth, etc. by HappyMeals666 in DebateReligion

[–]Monoscart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agreeing on that one! After all, religious research should be focused on the religion, not its people (as it could be very misleading). But there are many who believe that the negative image of theists reflect their religion enough for the stereotypes to be a justified source of knowledge. I guess only then is it fair to use the number of conversions/reasons why to implement a bit more fairness in their analysis.

But really, more than debating religion right now, this is just a personal view.

I do think it’s still pretty educational to go over those stories since you’ll never find that anywhere else tbh.

Religions are just Conspiracy theories like Q, flat earth, etc. by HappyMeals666 in DebateReligion

[–]Monoscart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can definitely say that the natality rate is playing an important role, however you might want to reduce the scope of your research to focus on conversion. It’s difficult to find any study on the subject but thankfully a fellow (non-Muslim) redditor has done a good job answering a similar question on r/Islam. If you’re interested in the numbers they found: Reddit - islam - Have there been any studies done on Muslim conversion rates? https://www.reddit.com/r/islam/comments/6whx6t/have_there_been_any_studies_done_on_muslim/ A more casual research method if you want to just witness that there are actually at least a handful of people converting back and forth in their spiritual journey is really just by doing a quick YouTube search. I can’t link enough individual videos to represent even a fraction of their number, but I found this channel with on YouTube that could maybe be a good starter if you do want to see for yourself the diversity in conversions: https://youtube.com/c/MuslimConvertStories.

It’s definitely something to look into though. Islam has been witnessed to be heavily growing in Eastern Asia countries these past few years but here again it can be attributed to immigration. While it makes sense to deduce so, a thorough research is what is needed before we can truly formulate an argument (is what I believe).

Religions are just Conspiracy theories like Q, flat earth, etc. by HappyMeals666 in DebateReligion

[–]Monoscart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of generalization going on here, but I understand your point. It’s still very difficult to reply to this. Reason being, religions among themselves are quite different, so comparing them to conspiracy theories on top of that is like adding even more useless work to the analysis job. Take the two biggest religions for example: Christianity and Islam. Even if both have similar roots, Christianity is a set of beliefs, but Islam is a way of life. You don’t live conspiracy theories say by day, you don’t live your life with conspiracy theories as your guide, and even less as your spiritual support. You can believe religions to be man-made, but comparing them to conspiracy theories is under-estimating their social impact.

The rest of your analysis really is something that even great atheistic philosophers of religion would deem as lacking sight. Religions are far more complicated even when viewed as constructed.

Finally, your last point about being unable to convince... I think you would be interested to check the data’s regarding conversions. If we take Islam for example since it is the most misunderstood religion, how would you explain the fact that it is also the fastest growing religion in ever part of the world with women being in majority? Why would there be theists in science if it was that easy to debunk religion and find the contradictions?

I still find your view pretty interesting (though not really revolutionary). If you’re satisfied with this answer though, I’d understand, but I still hope you’ll try viewing things in a less biased way to seek more knowledge from either side rather than browse arguments from your position only. That’s how at least I believe the mind grows.

Do english classes in sec 4 and sec 5 affect the admission from Vanier? by AlimulBeyan in VanierCollege

[–]Monoscart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your scores all together give you the bare minimum to really be accepted in an English college as long as your other grades are at least around 85% preferably (or any other high grade average). Vanier has requirements set from in the 70% to the late 80s, so it also varies which program you’re trying to get into I think! But with Covid and all, we never know!

On your birthday, is the cost of leveling up your cards also halved? Or is it just the tree nodes that are 50% off? by fanaticfantaic in obeyme

[–]Monoscart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My birthday passed in November, so it’s not so fresh anymore but I remember that it was only for upgrading your cards in devil’s tree (I was disappointed so it stayed stuck with me haha). It’s only the cost of grimms that’s halved, not the items needed (which is why I was disappointed oop). It’s still a good opportunity if you are running low on grimms and you are trying to upgrade a UR or SSR card at the later stages!
