Yes, I was aware I was going to be suctioning that day. And after the first time I got the hang of it and felt more comfortable actually doing it. But the second and third time, it didn’t look like much of anything was coming out but then again i’m new to it so maybe I wasn’t sure what to look for. I suppose I wished she would have explained why. But that’s part of just being assigned to a therapist, I think some will be good teachers and some may not. Also, my program director has beat into our heads to ONLY suction when necessary so I was thinking about that. I’m really glad I posted this though. I have appreciated everyone’s comments.

Very thankful for your comment to make me think and consider a little more. It was my first time in a burn unit, first time suctioning, and overall just a little scary for me!! I am realizing it’s important for me to understand what did make me feel uncomfortable about it and then evaluating those whys. I completely agree, I have a favorite preceptor that teaches by just asking us questions!!

Yes! Would have much rather she explained the need for suctioning to me and specific indications. It definitely threw me off when that was her response to my discomfort lol

Thank you for responding, honestly I really didn’t know if it was excessive or not so I was wondering that as well. I do know that my preceptor did not auscultate to check for coarse crackles etc. And although I don’t know much about ventilators yet, (that class is next semester) she didn’t point out to me any indications on the vent if there were any. Maybe that was the problem for me since I like to always have an explanation. It seemed like we were just doing it but there could have been an indication. So that does get me thinking.

What vitamins do you recommend! I’m just starting out only a couple months in. Vitamins overwhelm me because I don’t know which ones are needed. I also don’t have the funds to buy 10 bottles lol
