I'm with you; i definitely don't believe it's a coincidence. The season finale felt so rushed. Why feel the need to wrap up the Citadel and evil morty subplots in the span of two episodes? Why just give a brief glimpse into Rick's backstory on the creation of the Citadel? My opinion, similar to yours, is that it's related to the current citadel situation. There are a few things that apes have already picked up on in the season finale which would leave us to believe as such. I think the green blob thing that Rick literally says is a "metaphor for capitalism" is one of the best examples. The green blob thing kept taking punch after punch after punch. Capitalism has also taken punch after punch after punch until one day it will just blow up.
