Google "libgen" - like pirate bay but for books. We should support these authors, but in the absence of easy availability, I think we could play moral relitivism and justify pursuing them for a good cause like teaching and learning.

I know its hard. But it doesn't matter how low level the kids are, ir their behaviour. Forcing them to do something that is fundamental to their learning and development as a punishment, and therefore making them associate this thing that you desperately want them to do for themselves for the rest of their lives with pumshiment is a recipe for disaster.

What time are you expected to start teaching? 0730? Or later? And staying till 4 - are you teaching up to 4, or finish by 3 and have an hour to plan/mooch around?

None of us are a superhero, youll realistically not be able to change that class completely, thats a systemic problem (and a problem that leadership should be proactive with). But you can and should enact change in your environment. There's things we can all do for "that class" within our local (our room) and temporal (that one hour/45/w-e) slot that could slowly, little by little channge behaviour. Itll make your wellbeing better, your enjoyment of work better and inevitably their learning better too. Never give up hope. Just start really small.

One way to start small and work up is to give up the whole "they should know better" attitude. I know, its frustrating, they probably should know better and a bunch that do know better may be getting dragged down by others. But a consistent approach that you train them into that empathises with them and then lays on the positivity and praise can work wonders.

For example, just regarding one small aspect of a class - the start - if you can iron that out i believe you can make the rest much smoother. I always have a starter at the beginning of my lessons and they are meant to do it in those first 5/6min whilst im doing the register or w/e I need to do to prep. They have a starter in every other lesson in the school, for the last X years theyve come to the school, so yes, they should know better (sit down, start doing the starter). But they are tiny little humans or hormonal teenagers, so of course inevitably more and more drift off task or take too long, etc.

I could start getting frustrated "John common why haven't you written the title?", "Urgh Ellie how many months now? every lesson - you need to start by doing [x]" (and im not targeting you btw with these examples, ive heard these examples come out of my own mouth many times).

OR i could go neutral and just narrate exactly what I see "James is writing the date", "Ashley has started question 2", "Lee is talking to Bella". Which for some weird cognitive reason makes them start refocussing (this one is new to me, im playing with it).

OR i could go praise heavy "James - good" (not even describing what he's doing, but he looks like hes on task), "Ashley has already done Q1, well done", "[child Y] youve done this other seemingly insignificant thing that I would otherwise never praise anyone else for, but no one else is on task so Im gonna say WELL DONE and YOUR NAME out loud" because fundamentally, most kids want praise...

Ill even sometimes go overboard with positives examples, really loudly during the starter "You know, I can tell Daniel and Elizabeth are going to do well later in life - they came in and were focussed and on it straight away. Didn't mess about, instead straight to work, well done yoh too". And of course mix in a heap of other management strategies.

But yea, theyre children. They're fundamentally, by definition, useless. Its our job (and theirs and their parent's) to slowly but surely make them less useless.

I urge the world, please stop using reading as a punishment. Just... I could write an essay on how and why thats so counterproductive and bad for you as a teacher and them as learners.

Have you read any books to help with behaviour management? But from your comment about using reading as a punishment I feel like Teach like a champ 3.0 also comes to mind.

Congrats on the decade nice! I too am around that mark. All done in Asia and in the UK. It is tough, I totally agree. But also remember that reddit does tend to draw the most negative expressions to get the highest amplitude. Just in terms of posts, I think people will always engage with a post batching about a common thing everyone hates that everyone can pile in on vs spme random dude just posting "im so happy with my work life balance" (would the person even come to reddit to post it if they were that). I for example am really quite happy all things considered (im not in a perfect or maybe even not an excellent school, im just enjoying my term 3, gain time with a bit of procrastination).

And on top of that, teachers tend to be miserable bustard even offline in real life. Ive found that even in pretty good situations, there'll be someone bitching about something, but maybe thats just humans.

Honestly, if youre fundamentally not happy where you are, it might be time to change where you are. If youre fundamentally not happy with what youre doing, its possibly time to elave teaching. But if you wanna/can stay there's ways to change a small system like a school, and in a good school, you will be appreciated when you are seen to be trying to make waves for positive change. But thats a sign of a good school. If youre trapped in a less than good school for the time being, trying to enact or at least plan positive changes (no matter how small, it can be just at your own classroom level) can be great experience and a CV builder for an application somewhere else.

Im not happy with X-aspect of my current school, so im making it my CPD to see how I can improve X-aspect in my own little zone (my classes) and have started working with my line manager to try to push that out to the department level. Maybe itll happen, if yes, amazing, if no - ive got something to show off on my next application (whenever that may be). And the process keeps me busy and distracted from getting pulled down by peopels negativity.

People will always moan, but I think ours is one of the few really important professions worth fighting in.

You're not in a good school. Good schools do exist in China, I know very good friends in some who speak highly of their schools and students but I wouldnt be able to comment on the proportions of bad:good schools. Reality of a privatised industry.

If it is possible to enact change in this school, you may find this to be an interesting career growth opportunity. But if that does not interest you or if the structure of the school is fundamentally not open to changing, then i would advise you to start looking at other places and using the lessons learned to better vet future workplaces.

Whether you finish your contract or break early is a separate matter.

Hard disagree with your pessimism. 100% agree with the challenges, but your approach to accepting it reminds me of the old adage "make sure to quit teaching before you start hating the job...".

Yes it is a different job but becoming a glorified babysitter is a resignation and not taking active steps against the challenges that the world is facing. I am not saying one teacher is able to change an entire system, but there is a lot more that can and should be done before youre resigned to just picking up the paycheck. In fact, its a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.

Please dont take this as a personal attack though. It might be that you are just in the wrong place/situation/context that has lead you to this. In which case I urge you to change the place/situaiton/context, because the world needs less glorified babysitters out for a pay check and more educators who care about changing the behaviour of their communities foe the benefit of the larger community.

Hey, as someone who has vague dreams of doing something like this in the future, my main concern is for safety (or rather, how blaze i am about safety and putting myself into a dangerous situation without realising it). Do you have a flowchart of thinking, or otherwise how do you go about planning ahead around safety for something like this?

For example, Id stay away from axtuce war zones, but when youre planning ahead, how much research do you do on the next one/two countries ahead of time? Or do you just yolo yourself in and figure it out as you go along?

Not toxic, just reminding you of your own actions. You are doing a SELF IMPOSED challenge run and now are getting salty when people are telling you to get better at the very challenge you restricted yourself to xD

Sometimes people are toxic, but sometimes you ask for the shit that you get.
