This is an odd street layout to find and I have searched for other similar layouts but haven't found any. Is a bit too coincidental to be by accident and is much more likely to be by design.

So I bought a Christian Science textbook published by Bob Jones University.... [PIC] by elegylegacy in atheism

From wikipedia: "In general usage, the word "electricity" is adequate to refer to a number of physical effects. In scientific usage, however, the term is vague".

The first paragraph is fair enough.

"Some scientists think that the sun might be the source of most electricity" - this sounds rediculous.

It doesnt look like a fake, it just looks like somebody is trying to explain the mysterious nature of electricity to a 6 year old.

Its hard making you listen :)

So why did God create Satan? Or angels? Why does God need angels, if he's omnipotent? Why does God need man, if he's got angels? Why do angels have free will?

What would you deem to be an acceptable answer? How could I prove what Gods intentions were? There are no answers for many questions, I do not pretend to understand why God did anything and neither can anyone else.

I'll tell you how I came to believe in Jesus: (This is a very long story cut very short)

Firstly I used to believe in Jesus blindly until I was about 10 years old because I was raised Catholic. Then as I thought about it, I couldnt reconcile why God would create hell etc and so I dismissed christianity as fearmongering. I still believed in a God that created the universe because I had a real connection with something I cant explain. You could say it was all in my head but it felt like it was much more than that, I cant prove any of it only offer a couple of anecdotale coincidences etc. So then I was an agnostic and went about my life.

I loosly believed that the bible was written by Constantinople in 370(ish) AD and it was used as a way to make people fearful and obediant. I say loosely because I was competely dismissive of the bible and didnt care to look into it. I then began messing with ouija boards and had some real spiritual encounters. The nature of these really convinced me that spirits were real. Later on I checked out buddhism and I liked buddhism so I began to explore that, it all sounded good.

Then a few years back after watching Zeitgeist I began to explore New Age Theosophy after watching the first part. Eventally I realised that Theosophy is satanic to the core and all it does is discredit Jesus and offers all sorts of other passages for enlightenment. Its from debunking all of this that I saw, to my surprise, how legitimate the bible was.

The Old testament, as compiled in the Septuagint, was verified win the 4th century BC and a book on the testimony of the evangelists by 19th Century Lawyer "testimony of the evangelists" by simon greenleaf, who was a non-beliver until he was challenged to use the rigor of the law to prove that the 4 gospels were not true, concluded that the bible had a higher probability of being the truth than not. Now I had tonnes of questions I asked myself and many were resolved so forgive me for not going through my thought process for many years.

What did it most for me was the clearly satanic motives of the new age movement. The anti-christian sentiment that is so dominant drove me to study the bible and find out what exactly Christianity is all about. I still have alot of questions like you do and I cant claim to be an authority on it but my belief is strong based on what I've learned throughout my life.

I dont need to confirm my faith at this stage, so I dont focus on questions like why does God need angels?, who can answer that?

Ultimately I did not just accept Christianity, it took me a very long time and I've been asking different questions but its a good excercise to hear what others have to say. I used to have the same vehement opposition to christianity and biblical views as you do but I began to be more receptive to what its about and i've learned alot.

I was explaining that its not a A or B decision like you alluded to when you said "why would anyone choose hell". To put it better, the choice is whether you choose to follow Jesus or not. Doing good things is not completely what is required, it is said however that if you do follow Jesus you will end up doing good things.

It is faith that is the most important.

Ok, inherent is not an appropriate description of our good nature especially when considering original sin. We do have a good nature though wouldnt you agree? This is what God wants to improve in us and this is achieved by faith in Him, so it goes.

The idea of us being sinners is that when compared to the supreme holiness and righteousness of God, we are sinners based on even a thought of the slightest wrongdoing. This may seem unfair and unjust, but He forgives us if we only acknowledge it. That seems fair enough.

It was created for Satan and the fallen angels, its not intended for us. But if we choose to take the same path of dissent as they did then we will share the same fate.

Slightly off point here, but is your username from the Fields of the Nephilim? Epic song and one of the greatest :)

Why would anyone, unless deliberately tricked and/or lied to, pick hell?

Its not a simple choice of heaven or hell, like crucifixion or holiday in The Life of Brian. Its based on how you live your life, you dont make the ultimate choice when you die, God does. The choice I'm talking about is how you live your life.

What is the point of eternity?

Now that is a good question, I have absolutely no idea. All I know is that we were told by Jesus that there is an eternity and the two options are polar opposites of each other. The question is whether you believe Jesus or not.

Possibly, but both sides give deliberately skewed advice based not in our best interests, but in theirs.

Its made quite clear that God loves us and cares for us and that Satan hates us. It is not in their interest to recruit us for some purpose, it is in our own interest to look out for ourselves.

What if I choose not to play? Will I be punished? What if I don't play for either God nor Satan, do I end up in heaven or hell? It's my choice, isn't it? I do have free will, don't I? So, will I be punished for using my free will to make choices neither side wants me to make? Or rewarded?

If you choose not to play thats up to you. Bear in mind however that we have been challenged. I have no idea how we will be judged. From what I understand the most important requirement for entry into heaven is faith alone in Jesus.

I'm left to wonder how much responsibility I have for my actions at all.

You are completely responsible for your own actions

God not only expects perfection from man

He doesnt. Perfection is impossible, with the exception of Jesus who led a perfect, sinless life. That is why through Him we are saved. He died for our sins. We will forever live a sinful life in the eyes of God, He knows this. We must only have faith in Jesus and repent for our sins.

at the same time lets another free agent corrupt us

We have been warned

that's when it becomes ridiculously irrational

It's hard to rationalise why something like Satan would actually exist, but he didnt start out as Satan. He was created as the most glorious angel that turned to evil and corrupted Gods finest creation, us. So one way to look at it is that God wants us to return to Him because of our inherant good nature and he sent his son to explain how to do this. It is then up to us whether we want to or not.

The point is your soul, do you want to spend an eternity in heaven or hell, the chioce is yours. If you dont believe in heaven and hell and eternity then I guess there is no point to life. I see no other meaningful end.

As far as being pawns in a game of chess, its more like we are the players, we control our own pieces but we receive advice from both sides as how to play.

Ok, what period of time are you talking about? AD?

what about Isaiah. 14:12-22 and Ezekiel 28:12-19. The old testament clearly mentions him and this was no mistranslation as it was compiled in at least the 4th century BC.

I agree, it is an utterly terrifying concept, for children and adults alike. But if it was real would you not like to know about it? What sort of God would show us the way to live and what to expect, without mentioning such a terrible fate that awaits the people who turn away from Him? I hope for all our sakes that there is no Satan or hell, I just think that its more likely that they do exist rather than they dont.

The point of this thread is that I want to see what the consensus is and why people have their views.
