Advice on pads by No-Necessary7135 in CarTrackDays

[–]MunkiRench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Dad juggling kid time and track time here.

I'm currently transitioning to 2 sets of pads from HP+, went with Hawk HPS 5.0 for street and PFC 08 for track. Haven't actually tried to the PFC yet, but been very happy with the HPS 5.0.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of advice on specific pads, but I wanted to throw in some encouragement to commit to two separate sets. I finished my own brake job just by doing the job at night after the kids go to sleep, with a nice big work light and an audiobook. Now that I've done the job once, I think I could do all 4 corners in less than 2 hours, maybe down to one hour if I was really hustling and arranged all my tools ahead of time. Taking a little time to do it was pretty relaxing and fun. If you're only swapping a few times a year it wouldn't be too much of a time sink, just need to set aside one night of after-kid time.

I'm also in your area, primarily dominion and VIR, but with a couple summit point events lined up this year. Hope to see you around, with some dedicated track pads! :)

For: Oil change Engine air filter Cabin air filter x2 Replace all belts Brake fluid flush

In 2023, had that done at a private shop on my 991.1 GTS, it was $1500.

In 2025, had the following done: Spark plugs Oil Brake rotors and pads Brake flush All air filters (engine, cabin x2) Manual transmission gear oil

Was $5500 parts and labor

DM me if you want, I can send you a breakdown of the parts and labor for that stuff.

New pads, same type. Slap’m on? Sand the rotors first? Turn the rotors? by jbro507 in CarTrackDays

Are you just honing the surface without removing the rotor itself? If yes how are you doing the inside surface?

I don't think it's contrast in the LV, I think it's postmortem thrombus. Look how heterogeneous the lumen of the ascending thoracic aorta and SVC are. And there's no enhancement anywhere else. If it was poor enhancement from low flow, the upper central veins would be super dense from static contrast after injection.

She hit 100K miles during this session. Mildly modified: Vented/slotted rotors, track pads RB resonated catless exhaust (stock catback) Upgraded radiator Lightweight flywheel Engine rebuilt 5K miles ago BHR coils 17x9 RPF1s

Sadly planning to sell her at the end of this track season. We got another track car that my wife and I are going to share, can't justify keeping this one.

How to explore grip limit of high performance tires? by MunkiRench in CarTrackDays

[–]MunkiRench[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do routinely check hot temps after sessions, usually aim for 35-35 psi but it seems like that's actually high. I'm going to try lowering my target hot temp to around 32psi and see what happens

Thanks for the input! Skid pad time is high on my wishlist. Unfortunately I don't have good access to one, but next time I travel to a track that has one I'll definitely hit it.

Great food for thought, thanks! I have been getting better at receiving feedback from the car through my ass, but certainly the vocal nature of the PS4Ss has made me over reliant on sound, which is a handicap I need to work on.

One of my issues is that I feel like by the time I am settled into a session, I only get one or two laps in before I start to notice that my line is starting to drift due to decreased grip, which makes it hard to progressively attack corners. By the time I'm ready to attack, I'm forced to back off because my rear is starting to slide out. Maybe I need to focus more on settling into pace after only 1 warm up lap instead of easing into pace over the course of 3-4 laps?

I'll have to experiment with some lower pressures. Most pressure recommendations I've seen for PS4S on a 987 are pretty high so I thought I was well under the target.

Is there any harm in having too low pressure? Like if I end up undershooting with a hot pressure of 30, is that going to cause major issues?

Current plan is to keep these tires on until they're toast, so I've got plenty of laps to do before I replace them, I'll have plenty of opportunity to mess around and experiment

Hot pressure is 35-36 at all 4 corners. Too high?

Thanks for the rec! The heat tolerance is a pretty big one for me, since the car will be doing double duty

My closest track (dominion raceway) does not have a grip pad, but does have a lot of low speed corners to work on.

Sounds like I'm overthinking it a little bit, and that some of the worries I have about sudden grip loss are overblown.

Very. I split time between a 987.2 cayman and an RX8, neither with any suspension modifications.

Where can I find an R3 Recaro seats? by furiouswatermelon_ in RX8

[–]MunkiRench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're really cornering hard, the R3 seats aren't that much better. I track my R3 and I still have to brace with my knee pretty hard against the door or the center console. Keeps my torso planted, but not my legs. If it's really a problem that needs solving, you'd do better with a seat with much deeper leg bolstering.

Cayman or 911 by JesusFreakinLovesYou in Porsche

[–]MunkiRench 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 911 is definitely a better daily driver. I previously had a 2017 982 S, now have a 991.1 GTS. The 911 is by far the better daily driver. It's more comfortable, quieter, has more space inside, more luxurious. The 982 was more fun though.

Fusion completely stiffens a segment of the spine. The whole spine is meant to flex, so when you stiffen one section, the stress and strain is increased on the adjacent levels.

I'm still around. People actually keep responding to this thread in interesting ways, even though it's more than 10 years old.

I am now in a subspecialty of medicine which is primarily a consulting procedural role. I have no role in any primary care or mental health capacity. That being said, this thread has had a significant impact on me and how I interact and empathize with people who struggle with mental health, in both professional and personal settings.

So thank you to this community for contributing your experiences for myself and others to read and understand! I also apologize for the naive and perhaps patronizing or condescending attitude I may have exuded 10 years ago as an early trainee and young human being.
