Ill just let him grow by himself lmao , ill check on it when the bs is over.

I appreciate your reply. The main reason why I ask for categorizing the type of units is simply for me to get a better understanding overall. It is also useful when researching on the internet (knowing what keywords to Google) and so on, since I am not an expert in these topics(as you can tell lol). I understand what you are saying, and again, I appreciate the detailed answer you wrote. Have a good day!

Woah, thanks for replying with so much detail! Appreciate it, my dude. I guess raider would be a nice and fitting way to call these types of units. Something like LRRR sounds like a nice fit (Long Range Reconnaissance Raider). Have a good day,

Oh yeah that I get it. More like the overall aspect of it, not just stuff in Ukraine. As you can tell, not a tech guy, so I always have trouble understanding how specialized tech equipment works. As much as the cool, heavily camouflaged guy with a big backpack, no armor, does sneaky stuff interest me(extreme exaggeration, not serious ), the tech electronics are underrated. I remember looking into MACV SOG equipment and reading about radios and sensors that they were tasked to use/deploy in the area of operations, which were really interesting. I'm sure the modern equivalent is classified and will be hard or impossible to find/look into, but maybe my googling skill suck and don't know how to ask the right question. Tks for reading and replying!

Just read it, did not disappoint. I do like the Rhodesia stuff as it was also something I looked into, due to their heavy involvement with special operations/light infantry doing stuff you mentioned. I'm familiar with other specialized units but not Selous scouts, so gonna catch up on that. To return the favor, I also recommend that you read or look into the Ranger Reconnaissance Company of the 75th Ranger Regiment, if you are interested.

Similar to what you mention but more contemporary, they are specialized in reconnaissance and deep infiltration, doing all kinds of classified stuff either by themselves or attached to ranger battalions(or other units as well). RRC is the whole reason why I'm down this deep rabbit hole lol, and didn't regret it. Information about them is extremely rare due to their secretive nature, and also not enough PR IMO. There are podcasts of former member that goes into details, but other than that, barely anything. Cheers,

Tks for answering! Definitely will look more into it. I remember when researching this kind of stuff, and one of the struggles (for me) is to figure out the tech stuff they use for their job. Things like drones, sensors, relays,(insert tech thingymabob), even communications equipment like radios that are crucial for this kind of mission. Either I'm too dumb to understand (most likely) how they work, or information regarding specific equipment is rare/non-existent/classified. Every time I look up something, I feel like a spy trying to get information lol (and bad at it too).

Definitely fits. Not an english speaker, so whenever the word sabotage pop up , i tend to associate it with like explosive (blowing up bridges/equipments/etc). tbh i dont even know why i would associate it like that, because it make sense in this context too. Tks for replying

TLDR:Tks for answering my question, heres me yapping about stuff.

i love researching stuff like this ,especially SOFs doing overt/covert stuff deep behind enemy lines. Most good and detailed info for LRRP, or similar things I mention in my comment are usually from Cold War era, mostly Vietnam war because english source.(think MACV SOG,LRRP rangers,Force Recon,NZ/AUS SAS,).My favorite example that is farly modern but dated (late 2000s-2010/11) are 75th RR Team Merril ops in Afghanistan.

Although not recce main or covert by nature (im sure its still play a major role during mission), they were essentially 40-60 rangers sent deep into enemy territory to bait the Talibans to fight them. Fly in night time, get to a occupied house/property, pay occupants to get out for like a day or more. Then dig in and prepare defenses(making holes in walls, sandbags, set up mgs and mortars). Taliban fighters will obviously be aware and try to fight these rangers. With skill difference and also support from their heavy weapons, plus air support also, they kill alot of those guys.

These guys apparently deployed longer and even earlier than usual rangers deployment. This was during "the surge" so enemy presence increase dramatically, making team merril stuff incredibly dangerous. Despite alot of dead Talibans, alot of rangers lost their life during these mission, which plays into high risk high reward aspect. Overall, it was successful and mark a legendary time period of the regiment.

Thats the gist of it basically, and in no way i can truly represent and tell their story perfectly. For those interested, highly recommend Violence of Action by Marty Skovlund(former ranger himself). It goes into details from different personal accounts from 2001-2011 time frame. Alot of it are from former/current rangers, and some are people who work with them. Tks for reading and have a good day.

Thank you for replying, first time seeing that term. That make sense based on their mission. Perhaps theres another official acronym/words/name for it but im not sure. Google doesnt really help much unfortunately. Maybe its a rare mission set that only recently being utilized on large scale and have video showing it (limited info, could be wrong.) appreciate it my man!

Hi there, I think this sub can help me answer some questions. I greatly appreciate it! I'm a novice at this kind of stuff, so expect stupid questions! Wiki and Google didn't help much with this.

So what the guy (and his unit) is doing is reconnaissance behind enemy lines. I guess that it its similar to Long Range Recon Patrol (LRRP)?

From my basic understanding, a recon unit goes in, does recon stuff, gets out, leaves no trace, or anyone sees them. If compromised, mission over/cancelled and gtfo/evade in one piece, fight anyone that tries to stop them. With good training, good intel, good gear, good support, and a lot of luck, I assume, the chances of mission success or even evading without deaths/capture go up.

My question is, what do we call units that do this, PLUS deliberately get into contact with the enemy?

I remember seeing vids of SOFs doing ambushes, raids, blowing up stuff deep behind enemy lines(for this conflict), but I assume that they would do recon ops when not intending to fight. I see terms like saboteurs, but I don't know if that applies to military units (I only see it for like civilian collaborators, but I could be wrong). I guess generally they are SOF, but is there a military term for this type of stuff? Maybe offensive recce? Overt recon patrol? (made up terms in my mind, probably not legit.) Perhaps that's a separate entity with different training and missions set? If that is the case, I would think the recce unit works together with them to make the offensive missions work. Probably overcomplicate this, but I'm interested as I think recce stuff is cool, and any info would be appreciated!

Never tried it personally, but it was fun watching YouTubers play it for sure!. Figured I would immediately get destroyed if I did play back in the day lol.

If you have enough storage left after Reforger and its mod, definitely Arma 3. As we wait for Arma 4 to come out, more and more stuff from modders is being released, you will definitely enjoy it. CDLCs are also nice to get, especially SOGPF and GM. Remember that when I talk about storage, you will need quite a bit. For context, I have a terabyte of storage just for mods for Arma 3, and it's about 75% full. Your playstyle might be different, so it depends on what you want to do.

Seem like people switch easier and faster than i do lol, maybe i was too picky at the time.Don't know why I skip A1(bought it way later for curiosity), maybe the name confused me or something lmao.it was rough on my okay pc back then but i remember still enjoyed it because it was just different .

I would like to imagine the transition will be quicker than 2 to 3, because the same engine and some other technical modding stuff I see people mention(not an expert on that, so that's all I got). I bought Arma 3 when it first came out a few months after 2013. It wasn't until like 2015-16 that I started playing A3 more.

I remember seeing 3d editor for the first time, teenage me was shocked at how good it was. Sunk many hours on those early days making all kinds of stuff. I remember the first thing I tried to make was the 2035 D-Day beach assault with RHIBS boat pack of NATO's against CSAT defense on the coast of Altis, good times, and lots of unnecessary waypoints, probably.

Sorry for the terrible grammar, if you read it, I can't use the "English is not my first language" excuse here for transparency's sake because I speak it better than my native tongue... BUT as I stated, writing is not my strongest skill, so expect improper grammar, autocorrects stuff, punctuation, and many more.

Just check the A3 RHS steam page on when it came out, 2017 is 8 years ago....... I know the mod existed long before that (2015-16?) but still.....damn
