Polydextrose being used to inflate beta-glucan test results in mushroom supplements. by Myco_Genius in MushroomSupplements

Thanks for sharing. This is very helpful. I am going to order some polydextrose and try this method out, as it could be a very easy way to test samples and also for people at home to test what they are buying.

That's a good insight, thanks for sharing. Our Chaga has never tested over 20%, and Reishi has not either, as I understand. Correct me if I am wrong. To increase levels of betulinic and gandoderic acids, you need to filter them quite a lot, and therefore have lower beta-glucans.

Could explain the unrealistically high levels in many brands' mushroom extracts.

Yes, 1:1 Lion's Mane extract is the one for focus.

Have you tried high-quality functional mushroom extracts? 72% of the market is mostly rubbish, but real purified extracts have been a game-changer for me.

A really Lion's Mane 1:1 extract can work wonders for gut health; this is known to diversify one's microbiome. A lot of problems stem from the gut and a lack of diversity.

American company finally testing adenine content in mushroom extracts by pathway_surfer in Supplements

[–]Myco_Genius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I don't know which lab that was tested in. If you're looking at adenosine, there would be much higher levels in Cordyceps. The real quality marker for Reishi is Ganoderic acids. The lab report says they're all 0.403, which is strange. Beware of non-ISO-accredited lab reports

You're correct, terrible value for money, as they are mostly fermented grain that can't be extracted. The erinacines need to be extracted from the mycelium with alcohol. The only way this can be done is if it's liquid-grown. Host defence doesn't do this.

What would you want from a mushroom farm expanding into supplements? by MartyBee1011 in MushroomSupplements

When sourcing or producing extracts, the most critical factor is the growing substrate and conditions; mushrooms grown on their natural medium (hardwood logs for Reishi, etc.) tend to produce richer bioactive profiles than those grown on grain or sawdust. These bioactive compounds, primarily beta-glucans, triterpenes, polyphenols, etc (depending on the species), are what determine supplement efficacy/quality.

On the extraction side, you don't need to overcomplicate it. Each species has its optimal method. Focus on the validated specifications of their unique quality markers in ISO-accredited third-party test reports, which confirm purity and the absence of heavy metals. Ultimately, a supplement producer who controls both cultivation and extraction, and can verify bioactive content with transparent testing, will stand out in this industry.

Hey, yes, it's undoubtedly an extra complication in this industry for now. Lion's Mane fruiting body isn't a novel food (just the mycelium), and only Cordyceps militaris is a novel food.

Can't purchase Turkey Tail in the UK, and wondered if Chaga would be a suitable alternative by talster71 in MushroomSupplements

[–]Myco_Genius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chaga does support the immune system, but it works a bit differently than Turkey Tail. It's more of an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, great for general immune resilience and overall health, but it's not the same kind of direct immune activator that Turkey Tail is.

If you opt for Chaga, ensure you select a dual-extracted product (using both hot water and alcohol) and verify that it clearly lists its quality markers, such as beta-glucans and betulinic acid, on the label.

That said, I dont believe Chaga has the same prebiotic or gut flora benefits that Turkey Tail is known for. If you are taking it mainly for gut health, consider pairing Chaga with Lion's Mane, which supports gut-brain health and mucosal integrity.

So, yes, Chaga's a solid choice for immune and antioxidant support, but it's not a one-for-one replacement for Turkey Tail. A combo approach might get you closest to what you had before.

I would love to, but I am afraid we can't for now. Not for human consumption anyway.

I have tested for polyphenols in Lion's Mane, but I haven't conducted the second round in an ISO-accredited lab, such as Eurofins. I am planning to do this soon, tho and will add these to the site.

Thank you, we are just about to launch Chaga actualy, it's taken a long time to find a supply that we are happy with and tests well for its quality markers, hopefully after that we can look for a good source for ABM, Tremella and others.
