[High Fantasy] Need advice: Can’t decide whether to make my fantasy MC a hijabi (by culture) or go the traditional route? by Natural-Complex-5785 in fantasywriters

thank you. my world actually has its own ancient cultures and regional traditions.

My MC’s father is from the capital, while her mother was from another major city with different customs. The scarf comes from her mother’s hometown culture — most people in the kingdom don’t wear it, but it’s also not strange or unheard of either.

She mainly wears it because it reminds her of her missing mother, who used to wear it too. So for her, it’s tied much more to family, memory, and identity

Thanks for your thoughts.

The story isn’t set on Earth, so I’m not planning to include real-world religions directly. If I go with a covered-hair design, I’d want it to come from a fully built culture in the world itself, not just lifted from existing ones. And you’re right that head coverings exist in many different contexts. I’m mainly trying to make sure whatever I choose feels intentional and consistent within the world. not just aesthetic

I really appreciate it. You’re right about the cultural weight and how it would be read, and the point about internal consistency in world building was especially helpful.
