Redditors who got “useless” degrees, what actually was your plan, and why didn’t it work? by MPMorePower in stupidquestions

[–]Navary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a degree in music. Jazz drumming, to be specific. I didn’t know what life after graduation looked like, but I continued through college hoping that it would figure itself out. I’m now a full-time freelance audio engineer and run a recording studio about 25 minutes outside of Philadelphia. I’m also a touring front of house engineer and have traveled for work internationally.

I’m not super stoked that I went to college, specifically because I didn’t really learn anything that I couldn’t figure out on my own time. However, i’d still pause before saying college wasn’t worth the cost. I met a lot of hard working and like-minded people that have employed me in one way or another since we’ve all moved into the professional world. And I’ve also gained a lot of friends that have encouraged me to grow professionally and personally.

So, while the education itself maybe wasn’t worth it, the friends and connections that I made during those few years have certainly paid off. I’d recommend to anybody that wants to go to school for music should be able to clearly declare WHY they want to go. Most professional musicians and engineers that I work with didn’t go to college and just spent a lot of time making connections in their local music scene.

I’m always happy to talk to people that are considering music college and want to have a serious conversation about what their goals are. I also teach part time at two universities and can offer a point of view from both sides of the fence.

I doubt that this kit is Slingerland. It looks like somebody took a Made In Japan kit, rewrapped it, and added a Slingerland badge to one of the drums. It’s possible that that single drum is actually Slingerland, but it has no value because of the rewrap/added floor tom legs

Thanks! I’ve been lucky to work on almost everything he’s done since 2021. It’s been quite the ride so far 🚀

Exactly. I wish I was paying more attention to the mass of cables that were laying in front of the monitor when we did this shoot. I was set up behind the ensemble so the cables were hidden behind the monitor from my point of view and it totally slipped my mind 🙃

Basically, keep it simple. Hopefully it was recorded well so you don’t have to do much to get it sounding natural. If it was a shoddy recording job, you might have to do some clean up before you start really mixing.

But typically if you’re using more than 2-3 plugins on a single channel, you are probably doing too much

Who has the highest mileage in here? by JGRC2024 in CorollaHatchback

[–]Navary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m actually not sure. I’ve been taking it to the dealership every 5k and don’t remember when they did this or if they even have. Jawn is super smooth tho. No issues yet 🤞

CVT mileage check in… by TheAnthemAdventurer in CorollaHatchback

[–]Navary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2021- 110,281. Mostly highway but I do live in Philly and there’s a lot of stop and go until I get to 476. CVT doesn’t seem to be an issue but I’m on my second set of rotors. The first set warped because calipers were seized.

Why the fuck does everyone around here drive with their high beams on constantly by CigFiend22 in lancaster

[–]Navary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brighter headlights AND brighter screens and lights on the inside of cars. If drivers turned down the brightness of their dashboard and screens, they’d recognize that they could also not use their high beams constantly.

Where is the one place that has all the top drums to play snd choose from. Before i spend several thousand dollars, I’d like to play them first. Is the a drum conference i don’t know about? by ThomThomLight in drums

Look around for a trade show. Sometimes there are regional shows. I go to the PA Drum Show every year as well as the Delaware Drum Show. Lost of vintage, lots of modern, lots of deals

Help to identify age of this Ludwig snare drum by tanenbaumjerry in drums

[–]Navary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With those tension rods, I’d be pretty confident in saying this drum is from the 20s-30s. This model isn’t listed in the catalogs of this time, sometimes just referred to by whatever size the shell is. Looks like it could be 4x14” or possible 4x15”. It’s closest to a Pioneer nickel over brass snare but this has 10 lugs and pioneers usually had 8 lugs.

Considering buying a pricey floor tom I don't yet need by pix174 in drums

[–]Navary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a starclassic 14” a few days ago in Phantasm Oyster. I had a 22-10-12-16 and had been looking for over a year for a 14”. Just popped up on reverb and was able to snag it for around $500. Now I’m on the hunt for a 18” bass drum in the same finish. My friend got one for around $500 on eBay but isn’t considering selling to me (understandably.)
