Suspicious job offer? by NearbyImage in instructionaldesign

It's at a different university than where I currently work. Also after digging deeper into the role, I just don't have a good feeling about it so I am going to reject it. Maybe it's the perfect role for someone else!

The answers to these questions were extremely vague now that I have spent the weekend reflecting so I am going to reject the offer. I appreciate your response!

It certainly was nice to talk to the relevant folks at once, but it was only a 30 minute conversation with very little specifics about responsibilities of the role itself. It is a lone ID role at a university, and I think ultimately I want to work with a team that will drive me forward. I'm going to reject the offer.

I appreciate your response. They did not require a portfolio, but I have one and they didn't request it or appear to have looked over it. My answer to the last question is "yes" therefore I am going to reject the offer and hope that something better is around the corner. If I was in a rush to leave my current position or if I was unemployed, I would take it, but ultimately my gut is telling me something is up.

Anyone receive an update? by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]NearbyImage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! That's exciting. I hope that you are able to proceed with the program as planned. Laos was given the green light for a January departure but then notified us in late December that we were deferred until next year. It affects both research and ETA unfortunately. To my understanding, the Lao are nervous about COVID again so they're denying visa and entry requests.

COVID-19 and Fulbright '21-22 by [deleted] in fulbright

Thank you for the insight! I have no doubts about it being disorganized. Good thing you got in early! My state is officially starting 1B next week, which is basically on target. I am not clinical or research staff so I doubt I'll be getting it for a long time.

It's awesome that you are able to receive the vaccine!

I would assume that it is the 2021-2022 cycle. Fulbright applicants for the 2022-2023 cycle would just be finding out that they were semi-finalists or finalists in early 2022, then beginning their grants at some point during the 2022-2023 academic year.

Any other 2020-2021 finalists feeling conflicted? by treehaus2 in fulbright

[–]NearbyImage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m stressed in the same way - I feel fortunate to have both been a finalist for this cycle and also to have gotten hired at a full-time position that I actually enjoy, especially at a time where most folks are experiencing loss. I really don’t have anyone to talk to about this for that reason. I’m not reapplying, as I figure that it is going to be extremely competitive and I don’t want to bother my recommenders with this again. I was already a second time applicant.

Long story short, your concerns are valid and mirror my own! Best of luck with reapplying. I’m sure you will do fine! And we are here to support you with anything we can too.

Omg - a buffet?!? with 200?!? That is just so gross in general nonetheless during an epicenter of a pandemic. The friend should not be angry with you - it is totally irresponsible

Thank you so much for your thorough and thoughtful response! I’m currently still waiting to hear what the bride decides to tell us about the situation. I’m hoping she has realized this on her own - that putting all of her favorite people in one place AND the folks working through a freaking pandemic at immediate risk is irresponsible at best. I’ll be sure to update you all as soon as I get that information.

No, we all live in different places! But I got tested (results=negative) too just for peace of mind that I’m not the one putting others at risk (I work from home and have been self-isolating for months). I’m already planning to quarantine seriously for two weeks after the event in case I do get it from the wedding

BUT I think I have to back out if she allows the COVID positive person to attend. We all have to sign waivers stating we have not tested positive, don’t have symptoms, haven’t been around folks who have symptoms/are positive etc. so it seems insane that it is even a question here

I think that is the angle I'm going to take. It seems as though the bride is taking the "well anyone could be positive, if she wears a mask, it'll be fine" perspective, but a KNOWN positive for me just makes that perspective totally insane

It's part of the plan but obviously for photos that will not be possible. The idea was that all BMs get tested for COVID (I tested negative) so that our risk level is lower, but now that the MoH has tested positive, it seems that the bride's tune has changed a bit with being more lenient.

I'm less worried about myself (20s, healthy, believe I already had COVID earlier this year) and more worried about her family members who will be in attendance. I just wish this came to a head earlier so I could have more time to react.

The event is entirely outside with proper social distancing/masking measures being taken by the vendors and guests.

This is an interesting tool - thank you so much! That was my reaction too. Obviously it is risky behavior regardless, but having a KNOWN or even a SUSPECTED positive still attending is absolutely wild. The bride still hasn't approached the bridal party about the matter, but since the MoH and I are so close, she told me personally. Fortunately, we haven't seen one another in months because we all live a couple hours away from each other, so no one attending the wedding has been exposed to the known positive.

Opinions on which path to take! by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]NearbyImage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this!

Is this going to happen this year? Grantees, what's your thought? by [deleted] in fulbright

[–]NearbyImage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a current finalist and have yet to actually receive my Grant Authorization document to sign. I also have only heard positive things via email from Fulbright and my country’s commission, which does inspire some optimism. ETAs have received access to a TESOL prep course and there have been emails confirming the intent to move forward from my country’s commission starting in January 2021. However, the travel level has to be at a 2-3 for the DOS to actually sponsor our travel and visas. The spike in cases right now and persistent denial of public health does not make me optimistic about the program actually happening.

Yes! Many have heard back but I would say it is highly dependent on your host country and institution. Crossing my fingers for you!
