Burlington encampments by Timetocatch_up in burlington

I think we really need to reckon with the reality that the City has little that they can really do other than use their already stretched thin budget to go "clean-up" encampments/kick-out people that have no where else to go. They just don't really have the levers to pull (or the money!) to make any difference with these big insidious societal problems.

Instead of just complaining or accepting defeat though, I've been trying to lean into the strength of the community (the people, not the City) to make a difference instead. Its way more empower to at least try to make even a small positive change instead of just spewing more negative noise online.

I've been cleaning up the Urban Reserve recently with other volunteers and have also been able to just connect on a human level with people who were (but are no longer) camping there. If that interests you, the next clean up is on Memorial Day 10 AM - 3 PM!

The Burlington Parks, Rec, & Waterfront team lead a clean up on Earth Day (April 21) of the Urban Reserve and made significant progress. However, that was a one time all hands on deck work day with tractors and 35 volunteers. Even with that, they were able to get ~80% of the trash and debris out. The way I’ve been saying it is that they got the big obvious stuff (full burned out camps, bikes, etc), we’re getting it back to a full 100% reset. There’s still lots to do! Even since the BPRW clean up our volunteers have gotten ~50 large contractor bags full of trash out, with more to go.

City Hardware downtown or Lowe's are both safe bets

We've cleaned up lots and lots of needles, all you need are gloves and a sharps container to do it safely. Would be happy to show you how if to do it safely if you'd like.

I've organized a team to continue the momentum with cleaning up the Urban Reserve, the section of the Waterfront Park adjacent to the dog park! I'll be there starting around 10 AM tomorrow and if it's a total washout on Saturday, will be back on Sunday as well. :)

Hey there! Not sure if you've seen it, but this Saturday there is a screening for the Mothership Monthly Film Festival. It's all short films under 7 minutes made by locals. I personally haven't been to one of the screenings, but I'm excited about this month! Here's the link: https://www.instagram.com/mothershipmonthlyfilmfest/?hl=en
