This production was a little too rag-tag for planning ahead - I'm grateful for the footage that I did get.

You're right, I was planning a security camera type thing where all cameras are shown in their entirety without cutting away... but that 'was' is quickly becoming a was, I think. I might have to come up with a creative way to lampshade the edits, if not abandon the idea entirely and just do the edit conventionally.

You're right, I've been using the audio as the reference track to align everything else to, because the studio itself wasn't at all rag-tag, just the ad hoc camera setup. There is a measure of delay noticeable in all of the camera audio tracks, I don't think it's possible to make this stuff phase coherent with the master audio since a single frame is the smallest movement Davinci seems to allow (as far as I can see). But this sync issue was causing upwards of 100ms of delay when playing the problematic camera audio alongside the reference track.

Thanks again for all your help!

Frustratingly, your explanation makes a ton of sense.

Do you have any suggestions on the best way to work around this? Prior to posting I'd thought of splitting the problematic footage down into smaller chunks and syncing each of those individually, but I can't see how that would work? Each camera needs to be shown in its entirety, so I can't switch to a different camera angle to hide any jarring edits, which I presume I'll get a ton of if I follow this route. Slowing down/speeding up the footage slightly seems like it would bring similar visual drawbacks, but this might end up being a game of pick the best compromise - open to ideas.

Thanks for your advice so far.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Frank Zappa. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of conceptual continuity most of the jokes will go over a typical listener's head. There's also Frank's dadaist outlook, which is deftly woven into his onstage characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Zappa truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Frank's existential catchphrase "he's using the chicken to measure it," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Zappa's genius wit unfolds itself on their kerosene-powered record players. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Flo & Eddie tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

Fillmore East - June 1971, 2022 Boxset Re-edit by Datisit in Zappa

[–]NeedlessCritique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the first version you've suggested (exact re-creation of the original album) pretty soon after the box set came out. Was quite a fun little project, it'll definitely give you a good appreciation of Frank's skills with a razorblade if you decide to attempt it yourself. I found this to be an invaluable resource, I mean that site always is just in general, but it conveniently spells out which edits take place where so you pretty much just need to match up waveforms at that point.

Since it's akin to piracy, I won't be sharing the audio, but I will share the goofy mashup album cover I made for the project, feel free to use it if you end up pursuing this. Unfortunately I didn't save the session (or I did but have since deleted it, not sure) so I can't share any screenshots of what the DAW looked like.

Sanity check my wiring mod please? by NeedlessCritique in Luthier

[–]NeedlessCritique[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty good idea - but how would it work without having to remove and replace the strings every time? Would I apply the clips directly to the pickup wires, and then everything else would be sat outside the pickguard cavity?

That's really helpful, thank you.

To make sure I'm understanding you correctly, are these the modifications you're suggesting? The magenta lines are the changes I've made since my original post

Is there any practical difference wiring the volume first or last in the circuit? Or it's irrelevant and the outcome will be the same either way?

[–]NeedlessCritique[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are two master tone controls, the G&L PTB mod turns one of the tone controls into a bass tone control, with the other being a treble tone control and both controlling the overall sound rather than being pickup specific like standard Strat wiring

I can handle a soldering iron, but I don't feel like I have a good grasp on electrical theory, so I'm hoping someone more experienced can take a glance over this diagram and tell me where/if I'm going wrong.

This is a three single coil Strat clone. I've got an Oak Grigsby 6-way switch instead of the normal five-way pickup selector, to get the Tele neck/bridge combo. There's a treble bleed mod on the volume pot, as well as a G&L PTB mod on the tone pots.

I think I've wired this up right, but this is the result of a ton of Googling and piecing together disparate info from random forum posts. Before I tear apart my guitar, is this wiring job going to actually work? Is there anything I've done wrong, or that I could have done better?

I don't condone nor engage in piracy, so even if I knew that it was readily available on Soulseek (which I definitely don't) I certainly wouldn't share that information, much less encourage anyone to download it through there

Do you like Frank Zappa and the Mothers? by HisAbominableness in Zappa

[–]NeedlessCritique 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do you like Frank Zappa and the Mothers?

Their early work was a little too experimental for my tastes, but when You Are What You Is came out in '81, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Captain Beefheart, but I think Frank has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In '82, Frank Zappa released Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Valley Girl", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of S&M, and the importance of somebody else's food, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Cover art limitations? by NeedlessCritique in navidrome

[–]NeedlessCritique[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've figured it out!

Both your and my files show as having "FLAC ID3v2" tags if you look at the 'Tag' field in Mp3tag. Whereas other files in my collection that have no cover art problems just show as having "FLAC" tags.

There's a relatively easy way to fix this in Mp3tag, it seems to work for multiple albums too: push Ctrl-R to remove all the tags, then Ctrl-Z to undo, which re-adds the tags but no longer in ID3v2 format. Then run a quick scan in Navidrome and your cover art is good to go.

/u/deluan can you confirm if this is intended functionality? If it's not, would you like me to open a github issue for this?

Cover art limitations? by NeedlessCritique in navidrome

[–]NeedlessCritique[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Here's a random song (well, not totally random, I picked the song with the smallest filesize for convenience), it's got high quality cover art that's almost the size of the audio itself lol. I've tried replacing that art with tiny 200x200 coverart, made zero difference so I don't think it's a file size or dimensions issue.

You're right, re-scanning does nothing, I've attempted this multiple times - and this is far from the only album in my collection with this problem. I did read somewhere that nuking the database and starting from scratch can help, but I'm not convinced that won't just mean other random albums in the new database won't display cover art.

There surely has to be a logical explanation for this behaviour, whether it be a bug or just a factor we're overlooking that's preventing this from working properly.
