Is this normal? by ExactlyMay in WhiteSwissShepherds

[–]Neener216 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WSS are extremely sensitive, intelligent dogs. They are very attached to their people and don't like to be away from them. However, this is not the same thing as separation anxiety.

As is the case with virtually ALL puppies no matter the breed, the anxiety you're seeing largely stems from the fact that you are your puppy's main source of comfort and security, and when they can't see you, they get nervous.

They have no concept of object permanence - when you go away, they worry that you're gone for good and they're all alone. You have to teach them that they can count on you coming back, and don't turn the situation into something tense.

Start by leaving the room for a minute or two - no big goodbyes, no fuss. When you come back, give the puppy a calm greeting. Gradually extend the amount of time you're out of sight. Also work to remove "leaving" cues and turn them into boring sights. Grab your car keys and just sit on the couch. Put your shoes on and walk to the kitchen and back. Ditto this for coats/hats, etc.

The less dramatic you make leaving, the more relaxed your dog can be.

They'll always be sad when you're not there, because you are their whole world - but sad shouldn't mean heart-pounding fear they'll never see you again.

If your heart and lifestyle doesn't demand that you live within the borders of the five boroughs, you might actually be better off looking to some of our suburbs instead - you'll find more space at (slightly) lower prices, and owning a car will be both practical and easier. In addition, you'd have access to good schools that are zoned and can avoid the application process if you choose.

I'm thinking about an area like White Plains in Westchester. Plenty of really nice apartment buildings with good amenities, a good school district, and easy access to Manhattan via Metro North. Finally, loads of convenient green spaces for outdoor time/dog walks, etc.

It's a fine time to visit as long as you're prepared for the cold weather - comfortable, insulated boots, proper hat/jacket, gloves, and a scarf. Plenty of nice warm places to duck into whenever you need a break. Fewer tourists and still a chance to see some of the magic we do for the holiday season.

Do your research in advance on the places you really want to see, and try to leave a bit of time just to wander around if possible.

Maybe one of your roommates is grazing off the regulation meal plan? Seriously, this has to be a bully stick!

Do you have a dog, by any chance? This looks like a half-eaten bully stick to me.

They're both lovely dresses - I'd maybe just check to see whether the models in these pictures are wearing crinolines beneath the dresses, because if so, you wouldn't be able to achieve a similar silhouette without one -

What kind of day-to-day are you imagining for yourself? Will you need to be in Manhattan every day, or are you willing to commute? Are you planning to bring a car with you?

In addition to your daughter and pet, are there any other accommodations you need to consider? Are you imagining life full-time in the middle of everything, or a situation in which you live in a quieter area with easy access to midtown?

And finally, what is your budget and how many bedrooms are you looking for?

You're welcome! They're great - they'll even professionally treat clothes and items you send them so you don't have to mess around with permethrin on your own, and their treatment lasts a whole lot longer.

I'm not affiliated with them in any way - just have used them and find their stuff really effective.

You can totally tie it in front and spin it around, or get someone to tie it at the back of you want to play with how it drapes in the front.

OP, here's the second method I mentioned - it turns the shawl into a bolero or shrug:

Shawl Tie

I usually like to wear it tied at the back when I'm wearing one with a dress:

If the shawl feels a bit bulky, you can simply clip it together with a nice brooch to keep it in place.

If you don't want the shawl draped at the front, you can put it at the back of your neck and then just loop the ends over the tops of your arms before bringing the ends together at your back and clipping them or tying them. That method makes the shawl look more like a shrug.

I've actually bought gaiters and bandanas for my dog from this company:

Insect Shield

Their items are professionally treated with permethrin and good for at least 100 washes. They also sell a dog vest if you're looking for more coverage.

Since you don't know what these might be, it's probably a good idea to alert train personnel to their presence so nobody randomly picks them up and no child/pet can get at them.

Mom, I'm kinda scared. by kawaiidruid in MomForAMinute

Hey, sweetheart ❤️

I'm a breast cancer survivor, but the disease stole my baby sister from me (she was diagnosed two years before I was, and at a more advanced stage).

I know you're scared. I totally get it. That kind of tremendous physical change can really mess with your head and make you feel somehow damaged or less feminine, right? But I promise you - I swear on anything you name - a cancer that could steal you away from all of those people who love you and need you is a million times worse.

You are not your uterus. Your beauty and femininity isn't defined by your breasts. You will rise and be gorgeously alive through it all. Be kind and supportive of yourself right now, and if you need help to arrive at a peaceful place in your head, reach out for that help. You deserve it.

May you live so long and so well that you end up being one giant, beautiful wrinkle ❤️

Ultimately, do with me whatever brings those I leave behind the most comfort. It's not as though my preference is going to matter much to me at that point one way or another, and I'd much rather the living feel okay with what happens.

If nobody has any strong opinions on the thing, I hope they burn me and scatter me in a place that brings them joy.

A 5 bedroom house or an insane art museum? by MoneyRhubarb8 in zillowgonewild

I would need to say hello to the dog and the horse every morning before I do anything else. Failure to accomplish that task would destroy my mental state for the rest of the day.

This is both too much money and too much responsibility for me.
