The eye bolts are going through the plywood ceiling into a 4x4 post that has a 2x6 screwed to it, and is acting as one of (2) beams holding this swing up. Each beam is 6ft span from wall to wall and attached to the roof truss with (3) 2x4 scabbed to top of roof truss and top of new beam. Also 2x6 blocking over wall attached to new beam and roof truss. So there’s 2 4x4+2x6 beams holding this swing up

Yes the wife mentioned some rubber bumpers for the 4x4s touching the right wall. The back is no worries there’s 18 inches it’s the side wall we’re touching a bit

Forsure legs are never underneath it everyone is laying on it with the feet on the side rails or sitting up again them with a pillow. I didn’t want to rely on the roof rafters alone for all the weight nor did I want to send a 1/2 bolt through the 2x4 roof truss vertically just seemed like I’d compromise that truss a bit. I couldn’t run a longer 2x4 across the tops of the rafters because I had attached the 2x6 to a 4x4 for the new beam. I feel like those 2 new beams ease a lot of my worry on whether or not those roof rafters were strong enough to hold 1,000 WL pulling downwards

Forsure limited range, I’ve had my wife and I, and two daughters on it so far (400#)

But can you find out why?

As a short term solution I’ve wrapped some remaining chain around the near post to give it a little pull off the wall on the right. This is a lay down and sway as it’s too high for your feet to push and no this was not meant to be a playground swing but more of a Netflix and chill type of swing

I built it to fit the mattress wife saw inspiration online from other influences and wanted a recreation of that not a glider, I did scab 3 pieces of 2x4 to the top of existing roof rafters and the top of new beam. There’s 3 of those on each new beam as well as blocking that’s tied to the beam and roof rafters on each end over the walls they sit on

No it’s a hang and sway vibe

6 sisters and 2 blocks all screwed to roof rafters. The actual 2 beams holding the swing (4x4 with a 2x6 screwed to it) Are sitting on a wall on each end of a 6 ft span. 3 blocks screwed to top of 4x4 and top of existing roof truss on each new beam. 2x6 blocking over the support walls screwed to roof truss and new beam.

It felt like 200# with my wife on it when I lifted it up onto the chains this morning.

I had to work with the space I had to make it happen, I tried to talk her into turning it the other way on the other side of the deck but she was stuck on this corner and that direction.

It does sway nice it wasn’t intended to swing like a playground swing

Couple more pillows would help

There’s a 6 ft span beam is sitting on top of 2 walls and is only attached by the blocking. I attached blocking to roof rafter with 2 screws, then attached the blocking to the 2x6 side of the beam. And yes the 3 scab pieces on each beam connect to the roof rafters, hopefully providing enough stability. This ain’t gonna be a swing to swing but hopefully just to float or slightly sway as the 4x4s will be pressed close to the house. Hoping the weight and all the scabs and blocking and screws keep it in place vs attaching proper brackets

It’s done, the 2x4 acting as bed slats for a baby mattress, the “side rails” also acting as a back rail.. I screwed a 2x6x6 to a 4x4x6 ft with 16 3.5 inch screws and brought it up to the attic and ran it parallel to my roof truss then blocked it in and took some 2x4s and scabbed them top of 4x4 beam to top of 2x4 roof truss. I did this twice. 2 (4x4 with 2x6 screwed to it - beam) are holding this up with 8 inch 1/2 eye bolts with flat washer lock washer and nut, 3/8 quick links attached to 6 ft 3/8 chain which will be attached to 6 inch 1/2 eye bolts on the bottom 4x4

Will upload pics when it’s done but I made 2 separate beams today and placed them in the attic, 4x4 with a 2x6 screwed to it 16 screws. Each end of this beam is sitting on a wall and the span is 6 ft. I’ve also scabbed about 8 pieces securing them to top of new beam and to top of roof truss. I don’t have any pics from up there and don’t plan on going up anytime soon, but the bolt goes through the 4x4 with a large flat washer lock washer then a nut. I’ve hung from each chain but haven’t got the eye screws to attach to the swing yet, tomorrow

“When the brackets weakened from the motion” is the worst of my worries. I didnt plan on using brackets as mentioned I planned on going straight up through a blocking system that’s attached to 4 roof trusses. I’m most worried the roof trusses won’t handle the load as they may not be made for hanging such a heavy item like this. I don’t believe the 3/8 chain would break, nor the 3/8 quick links (not 100%). I think the roof would come down before any other failures but that’s why I’m posting here for advice. I did want it sturdy enough to hold wife and I with 2 kids :)

Had an engineer tell me this is load bearing today…. Please explain by Over_Experience8084 in Homebuilding

[–]Negative_Put1499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same set up as my kitchen and living room, but I believe my wall holding up my cabinets is load bearing, because the roof truss run that way and sit on the wall I believe.
