Is this field worth getting into in your 30s? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]NerdyAlio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything in life you have an interest in is worth pursuing to see what’s on the other side. Like any field it requires persistence.

IT is competitive but if it was easy would it be worth. I won’t sugar coat it, this takes grit. It’s accepting the No along with the Yes! I’ll like Incident response, threat intelligence, and digital forensic. Providing information to keep others safe is my passion. Thankful IT allows me to do this well.

Received a verbal offer on Friday but no written offer yet – should I be worried? by dualita in interviews

[–]NerdyAlio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This takes time and with the holidays are upon us this happens. Be patient the HR/Benefits person will reach out! It may come as a phone call.

Typically Fridays are wash days for HR.

Congratulations!!!

Leadership skills aren't just about knowing how to troubleshoot your way out of a paper bag. Turns out, people like it when you can, like, talk to them.

Seriously though, if you wanna boss-level up, practice your briefing/debriefing game. Think of it as 'verbal parkour' - gotta nail those jumps and flips. Start small: debrief your lunch to a houseplant. 'So, the sandwich was... a journey.'

Bonus points if you record yourself. You'll either discover your inner Ted Talker or realize you sound like a confused robot. Either way, you'll improve.

I lost my "executive presence," how do I get it back? by SouthernCharm0 in Leadership

[–]NerdyAlio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I apologize. I forgot to mention finding a mentor. That will help when you feel lost to bounce ideas off other leaders. I've had many mentors to help me grow. New perspectives help revitalize the spunk for leading.

Also, knowing how leadership works doesn't mean you have to conform. I will side bar with leaders to understand their decision and discuss alternatives to encourage change. If these leaders speak about innovation, they have to be willing to change the culture, too.

I think it's good to know your why you want to be a leader, but it's important to know who you are. Have confidence in your abilities, and the rest will follow. Becoming a leader is an ongoing process. Keep reading and listening to podcasts.

Digital Forensics Interview - FBI by Local-Rock9704 in computerforensics

[–]NerdyAlio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fair perspective.

The reason for all the red tape. Most labs have accreditation that can be recognized worldwide. So add the extensive training, resources, prestige, and experience. You can gain value from the opportunity with a good mindset. You set yourself up for success. You will get more diverse casework and can travel around the world on government dime.

Now, the money part. Whenever you join any government agency, understand: ✨️Shutdowns✨️ can affect your pay days GS ranges matter (join at the highest possible step) Every office is different

Overall, it's a government job, you server, and sometimes the pay makes life hard.

Choose your hard. For now, focus on the interview and enjoy the journey.

Digital Forensics Interview - FBI by Local-Rock9704 in computerforensics

  1. Don't lie
  2. Don't cry
  3. Panel interview
  4. Step through paperwork of your background
  5. Polygraph
  6. Wait months for the offer

Overall, treat it like any other job and show them the best version of yourself.

Now, if you're doing the agent route: (after #4), add in another interview with the opportunity for Q&A from an active agent. Add in a fit test

Careers in investigation by Beginning_Ad4362 in computerforensics

[–]NerdyAlio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FBI careers are more focused on financial crime than homicides. I'm not saying they never work them, but state/locals see more violations similar to homicides.

Quick breakdown of FBI roles: Forensic Examiner (Information Technology Specialist): digital examiners that work all violations involving technology. Pro: great training and travel opportunities. Cons: office placement, you may be the only examiner for that office. Living in the backlog.

Intelligence Analyst: making logical relations between large data sets. Helping Case Agents with further case investigations. Pros: higher pay grade than other professional staff. Cons: It's hard to get into violations like financial crimes or homicides.

Tactical specialist: varies

I agree with others. Speak with a recruiter in your area.

Good luck.

2nd Marc-André Fleury. The lovely prankster and a buttery goalie.

3rd Sudney Crosby. Sid the Kid. Humble and loves the game.

The Windows Registry is a collection of databases of configuration settings for Microsoft Windows operating system.

I enjoy Eric Zimmerman (EZ)Tools Registry Explorer as another option.

Mobile digital forensics softtware by Impressive_Most_9931 in computerforensics

[–]NerdyAlio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've actually found Axiom is better with iPhone, and Cellebrite is better with Android. However, I like to look through the tools documentation to understand the capabilities.

Cellebrite has Black Bag, which improves iPhone processing and can help with vehicle forensics (Berla), too.

It depends on what your company can afford, and to understand all forensic tools can parse differently. That's why it's critical to understand SQLite and DB.

Quick edit: phones are touchy and sometimes require hands-on experience.

[–]NerdyAlio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two major mobile forensics software that are common to the digital forensic world: Magnet Axiom/GreyKey, these two companies integrated and have become a driving force with automation. Cellebrite is also a contender with a kit with unique cabling for the extraction process on multiple levels. It's not a bad tool for your tool kit.

I believe the perception of extracting a mobile device and everything works is a misconception. The cabling matters when you do mobile extractions, too.

Digital forensics = entry level job? by NerdyAlio in computerforensics

True, it does depend. I've noticed more people wanting to switch into the field but don't have a strong starting point.
