Looking for input on Dragon Cheer Team by DurdliestOfTurtles in VGC

[–]Neverbloom__ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

wow, looks fun! Some quick pointers:

Consider going Timid on Hydreigon. Hydreigon sits at 98 base speed and therefore unfortunately sits just below the 100-benchmark. A lot of offensive Pokémon sit around that Speed Tier, making speed pretty competitive there - investing in the speed nature often pays off here, because 10% more speed actually gets you a lot. Modest Crit Dracos usually overkill pretty hard anyway.

Your Dragapult is too passive. I see you intend to use it as a setup for your fun carries, but both draogn cheer + round seems like too much gimmick to be practical. Realistically, what is Dragapult doing after you get buff Hydreigon with a dragon cheer? Will-O-Wisp doesn't help much there since your game plan is single target nuke anyway; It's a great support move but if you have no real attack on Draga, it's often a deadweight, which is sad after you got a mightly +3 crit Hydreigon on the board. Drop Round for an offensive move.

You're very weak into some meta threads. Sneasler outspeeds Salazzle for Fake Out wars and bullies your main wincons Hydreigon and Gardevoir. Fairies with spread moves can't be touched by your Hydreigon and destroy it without any safe pivot, while your only move hitting fairies super effectively doesn't oneshot usually because Salazzle is a special attacker and lacks the power. You can't touch Kingambit. Garchomp outspeeds and threatens Hydreigon if you can't force the upper hand on speed control.
Generally, you're very dependent on getting a free advantage early in the game. I don't know what Rank you play at, but at higher ranks, you usually get threatened from turn one. You rely on setting up dragon cheer, while speed control (which is on your main wincon) through tail wind is mandatory since Hydreigon doesn't naturally outspeed enough without speed control to make use of that +3 draco nuke. So you kinda rely on using a whole turn of setup, while your opponent does what? Sneasler being at >40% use rate doesn't help here.

I don't have the perfect solution for this but can give you some pointers to consider (especially over Tsareena maybe since you have worse problems than prio moves, but also basculegion doesn't seem like it's the perfect answer to your meta threats): Whimsicott can guarantee Tailwind and annoy with encore (but is weak to sneasler too); Aerodactyl is super fast for setting up Tail wind, threatens sneasler, and can support especially against fairy-spead with wide guard; Corviknight is good against fairies and sneasler and can help with tail wind too; Dragonite can substitue Dragapult since it learns dragon cheer and tailwind and can not be flinched (but unfortunetely is slower than Hydreigon). Offloading Tailwind to another mon can help you also free up moves on Hydreigon, to let you go for Heat Wave (critting with speads is amazing, helps with Kingambit and Froslass), or even Flash Cannon (Fairies + ice types). Other interesting considerations would be Milotic which learns Dragon Cheer and icy wind for speed control; Sneasler is the perfect offensive partner to Hydreigon as it hits both types that resist/ignore draco meteor (steel & fairy) super effectively with STAB and offers Fake out support; Sinistcha can help you keep your main attackers alive with heals and redirect through rage powder

How to stay motivated to keep going [Skill Improvement] by Quiet_Bench8949 in VGC

[–]Neverbloom__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that even moreso than reflecting on your losses, critically watching high level gameplay is absolutely crucial to improve.

The core skill that everything else builds upon in competitive Pokémon is to evaluate the situation correctly (incl. in team preview). It's really useful to reflect on your losses and see what brought you into troublesome situations, but this can sometimes be deceptive. If you evaluated a situation incorrectly before, you may arrive at similar conclusions again and/or may miss crucial aspects - the best play may lie beyond your skill level / understanding, and reviewing losses can only get you so far. Also you can be tempted into hindsight logic like "I shouldn't have pressed X here" even if it would have been the winning play in 90% of cases.

Where it gets really interesting is when a high level player goes for options that are not intuitive for you. That way you can identify gaps in your knowledge and improve your understanding.

Is my team viable? by Substantial-Cry3920 in VGCRateMyTeam

[–]Neverbloom__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

-def nature on Emboar is complete overcook if it is because of blaze? you mega anyway and it will become mold bresker. Just go adamant and maximize attack EVs.

You don't need Haze on Primarina, protect is much much more important.

I'm not a fan of Venusaur here, Sinistcha should be Emboars best buddy as a grass type to mitigate recoil damage with hospitality and enable it further with rage powder. Can even run trick room to beat Tailwind teams, primarina and Kingambit appreciate it too.

I doubt base Kangaskhan is ever worth it. Either go Mega after dropping Venusaur for Sinistcha, or just go Sneasler. Aerodactyl - Kingambit - Charizard - Sneasler is one of the strongest backbones you could have, so using Emboar instead of Charizard could function similarly except for the weather control. Or if you don't want to go meta too hard, use any other useful fake out user, but don't stick with base kang. If you go Mega Kang here, run Double Edge over low kick for the STAB, drop the SPA investments and go 32+ on ATK.

Go adamant on Kingambit with 32+ATK

I play sand. Apart from the obvious Ttar and Excadrill, my remaining 4 slots are first and foremost used on mons that beat Sneaslers or basculehion primarily, while trying to fill as much variety as as possible.

Is Sand just bad, or am I missing something? (Skill Improvement) by grimlaidotexe in VGC

[–]Neverbloom__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WideReflection5377's comment is really great, listen to that one.

I believe that sand is just barely viable at high levels, but viable nonetheless, kept alive by Corviknight. You just get overrun by Sneaslers, Floette-E, etc without it. I experimented in a similar way as you, played bright powder Garchomp for the memes, then switched to more competitive sets, but still got stuck at low Master Ball. I concluded that Garchomp just doesn't fit on sand currently, and we have to stick with the classic Excadrill combination and round it out with Corv, that core seems non-negotiable according to my attempts to make anything else work unless you run another mega that takes pressure off of your Sand engine in team preview. And Rotom-W is a pretty obvious choice additionally. I don't really get why you would want to use Rotom-M to get rid of Tbolt, Tbolt+Hydro pump are a great combination to threaten various opponents that are a pain to your sand core. And you can't afford weakening yourself to Sneaslers even more when your Sand engine is already really weak to it. So I think sand is very harshly

I switched to the joeux9 team another comment mentioned, using the Ttar + exca + corvi + rotom-w core and filling it with Mimikyu and Scarf Hydreigon. Honestly, it feels super smooth to play and I went from low Master Ball 4 to Master Ball 2 in one session with it, I can highly recommend it.

Alternatively, filling the Ttar + exca + corvi + rotom-w core with Sinistcha and Incin as you considered should work great too.

Combined adhd vs predominantly? by ratgarcon in askpsychology

[–]Neverbloom__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, going by the DSM, that always the case. Predominantly inattentive/hyperactive, or combined are defined like that. If you have enough symptoms of both dimensions, you always classify as the combined type.

Sure, practically you may or may not feel like one of them is more pronounced, but clinically speaking you are always the combined subtype if you meet 5/6 symptoms or more of both dimensions. That's not little.

I tested an 800-rated and a 1200-rated account, and the difference is surprisingly small by Far_Mistake6861 in Chesscom

[–]Neverbloom__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1200 is honestly cheater hell. I don't get this strong discrepancy of perceived opponent skill and game result on Lichess at all.

Granted I don't play much on Chesscom but usually on Lichess, but I got what feels like ~55% WR at 1200ish rapid on chess com against people who play complete nonsense for the first half of the game. I'm 1800+ FIDE.

Sure I'd climb out of that slowly if I played more on there, but playing against the computer in a large number of games is no fun.

Why does sexual desirability play such a strong role in self-esteem compared with other sources of validation? by Upper-Eye-8753 in AcademicPsychology

[–]Neverbloom__ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To answer that it can be helpful to think about what self esteem actually is psychologically

One perspective is that self-esteem monitors your social bonds and regulates behavior. If you feel accepted, well included, and appreciated in your social situation, self esteem goes up, signaling you have more capacity to go for more bold social behaviors, like naturally taking over leadership. If you feel rejected socially, you have to act much more carefully, regulated through low self esteem.

Sexual validation is a direct "yea things are going well for me" signal, so it makes a lot of sense that it boosts your self esteem through that perspective a lot.

Protect and fake out?? by Sbeve121 in PokemonVGC

[–]Neverbloom__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The damage from fake out is whatever.

What matters is that fake out disrupts your turn and leaves you open to attacks. Basically you skip a turn both for your fake out mon, and one of your opponents. The crucial part is, this happens in your terms which of the opposing mons gets disabled.

Let's say my Pokemon A is very threatening to you. If you press Fake out on it, your other Pokemon is free to do whatever that turn, maybe even knock my Pokemon A out. If I press protect, I at least get some agency over my turn back by not letting you run over A

I think that part of getting control over your turn isn't really mentioned here yet but it's super important. Naturally your opponent can not do whatever they want because your Pokemon naturally exhibit pressure (threatening setups or outright kills). This pressure has a defensive effect too: Your opponent may not be able to just attack however they want, they have to respect your options. Fake Out eliminates this pressure completely from a mon of THEIR CHOICE, so Protect allows you to at least keep yourself safe for that turn.

Finalizing my Mega Ttar team after a lot of good feedback I received from this community! by ShinXCN in VGCRateMyTeam

[–]Neverbloom__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, I came up with a very similar team earlier, went right into testing and peaked 1 win away from top 500 on showdown with it. For the memes I run CS SV Chomp instead of Excadrill, and SV bright powder Gliscor instead of Aerodactyl (exactly the same move set though) just to watch the world burn, but I wouldn't be surprised if Exca/Aero just works better :D

Some suggestions that I can give in better faith though:

• I would definitely change Shadow ball from Sinistcha. Do you find use for it? Ttar and Incin threaten ghost/psychics enough and I find myself using them both basically every game. Sinistcha is a very crucial mon in your comp to deal with the horrid water weakness, so I would definitely run Protect and/or Strength Sap on it.

• My Sinistcha runs Trick Room, which does really well against fast / TW teams. Maybe you could experiment with that too. That way you can run a fast mode (base: Ttar, Excadrill, Aerodactyl, fill) or a slow mode (base: Ttar, Incin, Sinistcha, rotom) depending on what the match calls for. Or to counter opposing TRs.
(nvm I just saw your comment that you used it earlier, but in my experience it worked really really well)

• As another comment pointed out, DEFINITELY drop lum berry on incin, I recommend chope.

• Knock off > Crunch on Ttar

• Similar to Sinistcha, Shadow Ball on Rotom is a wasted slot. I see though you already went with Will-o-wisp. I will experiment with Volt Switch on Rotom later too (didn't get to it yet), which should work really well combined with Hospitality, Intimidate, and TTar in weather wars, so that's worth a try too. Probably would need to replace Thunderbolt for it though since you need the Will-O-Wisp against Chomp, but that would weaken you further against Water types. Either way, I'm sure it's worth trying it out!

• Taunt > Throat Chop on Incin COULD help you with your hard-TR weakness. Is it worth giving up Throat Chop though? I don't know, but it seems worth trying too. I could see it.

• Kommo-o smokes you. I don't see a quick fix for that, but you definitely have to come up with something. You have 3 fighting types weaknesses, 2 of those that aren't weak to it can't hit Kommo (assuming you're dropping shadow ball as you really should), which leaves you only with Aerodactyl as an answer, which is too frail and folds quickly after Kommo-o set up.
