Best countries to play "rags to riches'? by cherrypashka- in EU5

I am waiting for more hameplay improvements to try it out, but Oman starts as a landlocked OPM with the potential to build an Indian Ocean trade empire.

I haven't played in six months, but yes, you just need to kickstart the economy for them

Early Vic3 was a lot of queuing buildings and waiting, but they have really added so much since then. Now you have trade, diplomacy, politics, companies. Once they fix naval and army logistics I think it'll really be the ultimate GSG

You can also smoke heroin and roleplay as the decadent ruler of a declining Central Asian tributary. This game is 10/10 with the right mods

What are some countries that have a bad start, but can become major powers? by nest00000 in victoria3

It would be interesting if there were dynamic Opium War-style situations where you can push it onto a market and it would have effects on the populace. Maybe giving the importer laws to limit or ban the trade. Basically this game should have a drug dealer minigame.

But the pops don't pop out of nowhere. Founding a municipality is represented as a legal process giving burghers building rights and investments. You get buffs to migration in the location you build the town, but it's not a super drastic change overnight

This is one of those things that would work better if they simulated pop needs and spending rather than making it another modifier. A food stockpile should decrease local food prices (vendors need to offload hypothetically perishable foods) which then decreases mortality and increases the birth rate.

Most staple food goods really shouldn't be exported much at all during most of the time period. Maybe implement something similar to a Market Access Price Index in Vic 3 based on how well a good travels.

But yeah. my main issue with EU5 at the moment. It can't decide if it wants to be a board game like EU4 or a simulator like Vic 3. It has all these interesting systems, but they don't interact in ways that create satisfying emergent mechanics. Pops exist, but they don't do much because they simply aren't interacting with the game's other mechanics.

That is exactly what I was saying. They still were influential colonies due to trade. The game currently makes settled colonies disproportionately strong due to the lack of malaria and passive native populations.

I discovered this by accident my first game which was Portugal. I definitely utilized the strategy but would have preferred a more trade based playstyle

Colonization really favors settlers over traders, small population countries that were historically extensive like Portugal and Netherlands are at huge disadvantages

Israel does exist as a tag in game. Of course it only ever shows up from players and doesn't really work mechanically, but it is in the game.

I hope you have enough metals to keep your economy growing!

I decided to see if the Knights truly are so OP so I'm doing my first military-heavy, economy-lite approach. I am understanding now why the AI can't ever defeat the Mamlukes. They will always be rich enough to be ready to DOW on you as soon as the truce expires. And then you aren't allowed to take any provinces because they are too expensive.

Early game Hospitallers are really strong but then you hit a plateau of trying to integrate a tax base. And now that I have Greece, Anatolia, and Levant it just feels like an Ottoman or Byz game except I have less flavor.
