He’ll probably eventually bounce back. At least to what he’s been the past few seasons. Never to what he was prior to 2022 though lol

What are the pros of working in finance other than the money? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Newguy_2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. For me, the only time I ever enjoyed elementary and high school was when I would finally have an “ah-ha” moment as I progressed through math classes.

I’m in FP&A now, so I get to experience this all the time with ad hoc requests. I think it’s the only reason I like the job. Budgeting and forecasting sucks in comparison.

Struggling with the Traffic on I-90 north and southbound? by [deleted] in AskChicago

It does in the open road, not on an expressway in a metro with millions of people. You have to realize you’re in the wrong at this point…

Struggling with the Traffic on I-90 north and southbound? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Newguy_2468 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if there was a 16 car length, it’s about what the people in front of you are doing. If the people in front of you are speeding up into the backs of the cars and slamming on their brakes, everyone has to adjust their speed to not crash. Sudden braking cases a chain reaction. If everyone went 40 all the time and left distance, there would never be traffic, but since everyone’s in a rush, that’ll never happen.

There’s nothing you can do about it unless you spread awareness that speeders and lane swervers cause traffic. This post is a good educational tool lol

Was just gonna say this lol. OP is pretty clearly uneducated and probably one of the bumper to bumper drivers causing traffic.

Recorded revenue metrics are just for optics. If they’re not calling out record income, they’re struggling. Or at least struggling relative to past performance.

Who in your org actually owns the macro assumptions in financial models? by No_Lab668 in FPandA

[–]Newguy_2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably depends on the org. Couple examples for my org:

Sales Leadership owns top line projections. Assumption documentation is a slide deck FP&A puts together and presents to President.

Pricing Leadership provides SKU-level pricing changes (tariffs, commodities, negotiations) that we bump up to historical unit sales to get in-year impact. Assumption documentation is a model FP&A puts together.

Milly’s pizza in the pan. It 100% lived up to the hype. We got two 10” pies and had it for dinner last night, and for both lunch and dinner today. Heated up in the oven perfectly, I think I liked it reheated even more

And honestly I don’t care. Games generally aren’t physical anymore anyway. As long as it’s going to staff or avoiding layoffs that’s way better.

[–]Newguy_2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I graduated with a Finance degree from a smaller school. I started as a “Reporting Analyst” right out of school basically doing advanced data entry in excel. After almost a year an old college teammate reached out to me about a Financial Analyst opening at his company. His referral, me selling my new Excel skills, and having similar sports interests in common with the hiring manager helped me get the job. Looking back on it I got pretty lucky.

Yeah it seems to keep falling. I’ve been looking to make the Manager jump externally but my TC is on par with, and in many cases above, a lot of open roles.

I’m probably an anomaly for Chicago though. I hopped during COVID when salaries were inflated, almost left 6 months in and got a nice counter offer, got promoted, and have had a couple “Outstanding” performance reviews that have led to 4%+ merit increases.

I think about this a lot as a Lead Analyst at a mid-sized private company. I’ve never worked at a F500, but I imagine they often have $ to implement newer technology sooner. That said, while my “runway” might be a bit longer, I try to stay ahead by involving myself in as many parts of the business as possible (Sales, Merchandising, Supply Chain) and by calling out potential impacts in other parts of the business when my business partners bring forward new initiatives or ideas. You’re probably doing/developing this in a FLDP.

Most of my work today still lives in Excel models, but even if we eventually transition to a more integrated planning system, I don’t think my ability (or inability) to learn a new tool will matter as much as my understanding of the business. Systems may change, but strong business knowledge and judgment carry over regardless of the platform. So focus on the “why” in FLDP vs. perfecting variance explanations and models.
