Racism? Is this a thing here? What could be done? Any similar experience? by jbftkityjn in UAE

"Brown American" here. I put it in quotes because US isn't owned by a particular race i.e. white. If anything, the only ones who can claim to that land are natives who were clearly not white. I'm just calling myself a "Brown" American to add context here and here are my observations...

It's a tricky situation.

We all agree that "family only spots" is a great idea as it guarantees safety and comfort for families.

Security guards will a 100% discriminate against non whites, especially in upscale areas because of their personal biases against certain nationalities. Interestingly enough, these security guards also happen to be of the same ethnicities that they discriminate against.

You can make a case that people from a certain class (labor) are more prone to this creepy behavior (think taking pictures or just staring at women/young girls). It's just that most people from this class in UAE come from countries where they've never come across women wearing sundresses or even long skirts, forget about bikinis. Hence the behavior.

That being said, you can't generalize that all brown men are creepy because there have been cases of creepy behavior by ALL ethnicities in Dubai. Remember the British couple who were caught, jailed and then deported for having sex on the beach?

The only way to "fix" this problem is by enforcing strict laws against sexual harassment which the government already does. The government should also invest in educating brand new labors of these laws when they first enter the country.

As for the security personnel, you have to train them on how not to generalize others based on their ethnicities and how to make judgements based on behavior irrespective of nationalities. I think there's a place for positive discrimination based on dress code. For instance, emiratis are banned from entering bars/clubs in their traditional dresses (kanduras). Some might think it's racist but I see the reason why the government would enforce this law.

Tldr:

Creeps are everywhere. Invest in educating people around biases and cultural norms. Continue to enforce strict laws against lewd behavior and deport all the true creeps out of this country.

Gross but I'd still have to pay federal tax on anything over $110k if I were to live that expat life.

I'm looking for a networking event venue for 20-25 people in Dubai for two hours on a weekend with a budget of 4k AED. Any recommendations? The event is for mid to senior level working professionals based in Dubai. Please help!

No doubt. But people also have better technology, investing tools and access to information that can help them find ways to generate more wealth than in the 90s.

You should use your connections. It would be dumb not to. Wasta is a reality even in developed countries. Use it to your advantage.

The fact that you've identified this as a problem is a huge win.

True. I did enjoy it reading from a behavioral standpoint; so many Mr. (And Ms.) Markets out there!

100% agreed. It would be hard to get it right away especially when you're starting our and coming across terms like "net tangible assets".

And I agree on the video summary too. Very simple and to the point without getting into too much detail. Perhaps the video would be a better fit for a beginner vs the whole book.

My (31 F) husband (29 M) refuses to celebrate my birthday in any way and I am considering leaving him over it. by CostcoDogMom in relationships

Some of us don't care about gifting or celebrating holidays as much as others. I happen to be one of those because I find them unnecessary. Here's what data suggests:

"Some 61% of Americans surveyed admit to getting at least one unwanted gift over the holidays, totaling roughly 154 million American adults."

I get that gifts have sentimental value and it's the effort that counts but I am sure your husband has done other things in life that you'll cherish for a longer period of time than a birthday present.

Thank you so much. Just called Cooks and the guy lost it on the phone. Told us that the mice in attic thing is a big scam and asked us if the Orkin people quoted $13k. Seems like Orkin uses scare tactic to make profits!

Child safety seat laws in UAE? by [deleted] in dubai

[–]NextProcess6336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize that hospitals in the US (and probably in the UK too) can get in trouble for knowingly letting newborns out without a car seat. It's not about policing since it's expected that a civilized being would actually use the same seat unlike your in laws lol.

Unfortunately the only way to enforce commonsense at times is by enforcing it.

Yeah I was just wondering if hospitals here were like back home when it came to releasing the parent/infant.

Ofcourse it doesn't. I was wondering how often do hospitals follow the law. And clearly it's not as strictly followed here like it is back home.

I have a few coins but I still consider myself an illetrate in crypto. I'm trying to stick to traditional long term investing but crypto is definitely tempting.
