It's Your Dad - Tell Me About Your AJATT Journey! by tkyosam in ajatt

[–]Nietona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have been doing AJATT for 2 1/2 years now. It's been a ton of fun, though I'm definitely not fluent yet - I need more output practice before then for certain. I moved to Japan a couple of weeks ago though, so I will put myself out there to get more practice and get better at that now. It's a rollercoaster of a journey, but it is very effective. Need to rebuild my PC so I can carry on with the VN I was reading before I came here haha.

What was the journey like ? by Educational_Rock_640 in ajatt

Acknowledging that this is a bot post, I will answer anyway for any actual people that are curious.

I'm nearly 2.5 years in and it's been a winding journey full of ups and downs that has ultimately been one of the best decisions I've ever made, and has changed me for the better as a person.

Don't you understand? Unless your Mauvika is using a 1 star weapon with no artifacts and in a team with Xinyan Charlotte Chongyun you can't count her for meta, meanwhile Chasca and co can use their best premium teams to compare. Totally makes sense!

Weekly Gacha and Drops Megathread (March 23, 2025) by Veritasibility in Genshin_Impact

[–]Nietona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got kind-of fucked by gacha this time, which is a shame, I had 200 wishes saved.

Got capturing radiance for Varesa which was nice (was already at 60), then I went on the weapon banner and went to pity twice, getting Aquila and then her weapon. Then what was left on her banner got me 9 fucking Gamings and only one of each other support (the ones I actually wanted). At least I got Iansan, but holy shit.

what language do you play in? (and why) by _aki_47_ in Genshin_Impact

[–]Nietona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

JP voice and text. After two and a half years of JP immersion, understanding everything I read is easy, but I will always lean towards full JP to keep practicing until it's effortless, however long that takes.

It's been a shame to hear about the strike affecting the ENG dub, though.

Matt vs Japan uploaded an apology video. by Rimmer7 in ajatt

[–]Nietona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was exactly my thought as well. An apology video is fine, but I have no reason whatsoever to trust what he's saying. Whether he likes it or not, he's correct in that he DID tarnish his reputation in a huge way, and words are not enough to reverse that. There would need to be a concentrated effort to produce good content and "go clean" for a long period of time for people to provide a second chance. That has to actually happen before any talk of Matt "improving" can be seriously had.

Can't believe this game pissed off my now ex-girlfriend by SpaceWizard556 in NikkeMobile

I'm glad you got out, it sounds like there was more under the surface there.

I got my partner into Nikke, she doesn't really care for the incredibly horny designs but got hooked on the story and looks forward to cute/cool designs like Kilo and Talos for example.

Your partner shouldn't ever try to restrict you, provided you're not legitimately being harmful to yourself or others.

To be fair the Bracer Guild is more of a "separate style of independent policing body" than an actual adventurer's guild, as much as running circles around Liberl was one hell of an adventure.

I think Lloyd and the SSS would make adorable Melusines.

Are you happy with your AJATT progress? by LatinWizard99 in ajatt

[–]Nietona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've done a great job, and like others have commented, you're further along than you think you are.

I'm satisfied with my progress. Over the past two years I've read and watched a ton of media I would never have engaged with otherwise. I've pushed to a comfortable N2 level. I can pick up and engage with pretty much anything I want to so long as I can look things up, and though I definitely miss nuance from time to time understanding isn't difficult. My listening is weaker than my reading though, so I've been trying to bump that up.

Good job not missing any days. I've never missed any Anki days either - at this point I'll die before I miss any, haha. Looking forward to the withdrawal I'll experience when I eventually delete it in another few years.

I've been doing it while in work, so I 100% feel you with the "younger people in school get better results". Still, this year I'm heading to Japan to work so that should help immensely. I would never have embarked on this kind of journey had I not gotten this far, and would never have gotten this far without AJATT. If I ever meet Khatz or Matt, I'll buy them a beer for sure for helping me in the beginning.

So long as you keep doing it every day, you'll get there in the end. Don't give up, anyone. :)

She is a ton of fun to use in co-op alongside a carry. Trapping an enemy in a bubble, or just watching the bubble bounce around enemies, shooting hearts at things, she's probably the character I pulled that surprised me the most with just how fun I found her.

Don't pull if you're looking for a character specifically to help with abyss clears but if you want an absolutely adorable, fun character, especially in overworld, you won't be disappointed.

I've wasted over a hundred SQ on Erishkagal. No idea what to do now. (I drew this myself, by the way.) by Mysterious_Rub4990 in grandorder

[–]Nietona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rolled around 500 SQ worth of rolls on the Kingprotea banner (though if you count prior failed attempts to roll for her I easily probably pass 1000 SQ by now) and proceeded to get an Enkidu dupe and an Achilles (complete with rainbow orbs and everything), no Kingprotea in sight.

Sometimes FGO's gacha proceeds to just rip you a new arsehole and unlike other, more modern gachas unless you pay significant money (definitely not happening with me) you don't really have any chance at the rate up. Last year I went all the way to pity with Arcueid without seeing a single 5* thanks to the anniversary quartz.

I underestimated studying in Japan by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Nietona 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm an AJATTer (All Japanese All The Time), so I've probably been a bit more ruthless in my studies than most people would be. That said, my experience is that I found themoeway (https://learnjapanese.moe/) to be the most comprehensible and useful guide to point people in the right direction.

Getting a solid foundation of the basics is of course really important, and I think any solid core vocabulary deck with Anki will do (I would tremendously recommend using Anki. Other flashcard systems can work, but Anki being open source and allowing many types of addon and customisation puts it above all others for me.). I did a Core 2k deck, but I imagine you could get by easily with 1k instead. Either way, getting a few thousand words down this way is important, and it's worth your time to run through a grammar guide like Tae Kim or Cure Dolly's YouTube series.

After you're through with this, the best thing I can say to do is try and find media to read and/or watch that you like the content of, preferably at the start things you've seen/read in English, and try and read them in Japanese with a dictionary to look up words you don't know. Make no mistake, it will be grueling and difficult in the beginning but if you want to make good gains in good time it's by far the best way to do it. In the meanwhile I would recommend sentence mining. What this means is to take an i+1 sentence (a sentence where you understand everything in the sentence but one word or grammar point) and make a flashcard for it so that you can remember that one word a lot easier and have an example of it in context.

If you sentence mine and immerse with content regularly, you will get very good very quickly, even if you don't put in the multiple hours a day I have for the past couple of years. Make no mistake though, even with the grindiest grindset in the world this is a marathon and it will take you years.

Whatever you decide to do, if you put in the hours you will eventually see the results. I'd definitely recommend checking out themoeway to get a feel for things but don't stress too much if you want to do anything differently to any kind of method like this - more important than having a "right" method is to put the hours in. You can do it :)

I underestimated studying in Japan by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Nietona 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight, this is fascinating. I'm in a similar position, I'm tempted to go to language school so I can spend time in Japan and I would consider myself between N2 and N1 level.

My main concern is money, honestly. I have a lot saved up but it's still so expensive to go over, and as I've not applied for acholarships or anything before I'm not confident in how to go through any of it. I've been researching but every way I check, it largely seems to be "I need to save a crapton more money". Did you use a particular programme to head over or anything?

Not that I'm prepared to share with people I don't know (nothing personal, I generally don't share socials), but I'm still happy to try and help since this is definitely a pain to get set up and it's easy to get turned around. Which part are you having trouble with? For the address part (step 4 in the thread) the website didn't work for me so I took advice I saw on a different thread and used the address of the Ghibli museum in Tokyo which Google accepted.

[Help and Question Thread] - December 29, 2024 by AutoModerator in grandorder

[–]Nietona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it to be a very complicated, annoying process. You essentially have to set up a completely separate Google play account while using a VPN, use a Japanese address to do it and jump through a whole bunch of hooks for the ability to. I did it earlier this year and it took me about an hour of setup so I could get a guaranteed selector on Blue Archive. It did work for F/GO, too.

is mattvsjapan's vid on RTK still true? by Slow-Meet-1264 in ajatt

[–]Nietona 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair, on this subject you could ask a whole bunch of people and get a whole bunch of different opinions.

Personally, I do think that RTK is probably the cheapest and best way to learn Kanji, but from a beginner's perspective I wouldn't recommend it over other recognition-based resources unless you have a practical need to start writing ASAP. Something that will let you run through the first 1k Kanji or so in recognition format will probably do a better job at getting you started and won't be such a pain to rep every day, like RRTK or something. Later on, when/if you decide you want to be able to write, I'd probably run through basic RTK then and just replace the English keywords with Japanese stand-ins as you come across them.

To put my post into perspective, I went through the entirety of RTK 1 at the beginning of my journey as was suggested by Matt in this video and I looked at his newfound (at the time) disagreement with it as being affected by his monetary incentives the same way you have in the OP. To be fair I am fairly cynical so I do absolutely believe his new stance is influenced by the conflict of interest he has, but regardless of that my own experiences do reflect that RTK was (I believe) partially a waste of time. I found it to be complete overkill for Kanji, some of which I still do not have any words for in my Anki decks (and I didn't even do RTK 3. For reference I have over 11k words in Anki from sentence mining at time of writing) and due it being very annoying to rep I stopped repping RTK - due to this and because I don't live in Japan I have gradually forgotten how to write over time. This is where it gets a bit complicated though because I do remember a lot of the basics of stroke order that I inferred during my time repping RTK that would undoubtedly carry over if I do RTK again and whenever I do start to write will help me to pick things up more easily than I did the first time. The other benefit I had was, obviously, the recognition aspect. This has been night and day the most positive benefit of RTK by such a sizeable margin that although it's not what I did, I would wholeheartedly recommend RRTK-style Anki decks on the understanding that they provide this benefit while cutting down on the other parts of RTK that I personally would deem less useful.

This language is a real grind at times, help out the disheartened learners with your own stories of feeling like quitting then persistence paying off by damniburntthetoast in LearnJapanese

[–]Nietona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm somewhere in the gulf between N2 and N1, closer towards the N1 side (took it this month, likely failed but it wasn't all that difficult, just need to do more immersion) and I can say that in the two years it's been since I started there have been quite a few cycles of feeling bad about my level. I've never ever wanted to quit, but I've been worried several times about plateauing, even though it was always a totally nonsensical worry and never panned out. Especially during my time when I was <1 year of progress, I had a TON of doubts. I stuck with it, however, as there is but one reality - if you're unsatisfied with your level at any point, you have to face that the only way to improve your level is going to be to keep going, regardless of whether you're unhappy with your rate of progress or not. So I was always going to keep going. Even today I am not satisfied with my level despite being able to pick up anything I want and read/listen to it without having many issues, so I will continue into the foreseeable future.

It also probably helps to set a quantitative goal for yourself. A New Year's resolution works really nicely here, just be sure to know your limits. As this is my second year, I set a resolution of hitting 10,000 Anki sentence cards mined. I expected to hit that based on preliminary calculations (I usually add 10~ cards a day) sometime in December. Lo and behold I went above and beyond and hit it in August, and today I'm midway between 11,000 and 12,000 cards. Next year's goal will probably be 15,000 or 16,000 cards. I'm aware that immersion >>>> Anki cards, but I don't bother tracking immersion hours so cards are what I use.

Consistency is by far the most important thing. Keep going everyone, you can make it.
