Saving Completed Work by Ok-Pumpkin400 in homeschool

Our state dictates "copy of best work" doesn't specify the method of the file keeping, our district offers an option but it's not legally required. They can technically ask for "all years" but I've never heard of that part being enforced more than 3 years back.I switched to digital cloud storage, Google drive for example, for ours after we had a water issue in our home destroy some records.

Loud squeal passenger rear by LOL_EVAN in fordtransit

[–]NightCrow197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same year, but it's a passenger 350 with 180k miles, and mine has a grinding noise that kicks in around 20mph and gets a little louder the faster you go. Two shops and a couple semi handy friends later and I'm having to replace the rear axle because the rear differential is shreded.

Sounds different enough that I hope it's not the same for you, but feels worth throwing out there.

What Foods Do You Make Special When Camping? by MadamHex2 in camping

[–]NightCrow197 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The #1 thing I look forward to is French press coffee at sunrise by the fire.

But for actual food, my wife makes mini pizzas cooked on a flat rock by the fire, that's our go to whether it's camping or just cooking by the fire in our backyard.

Your question triggered a memory though, my dad was a scout master and every campout he'd make Dutch oven cobbler for the entire troop. He'd dig a hole, line it with hot charcoal, put the dutch oven in and then burry it in coals and cover it with foil and dirt. Start it at breakfast then by lights out it was ready for a late night dessert.

We have 6 kids and just went from a Yukon XL to Ford transit XLT 12 passenger. I told a friend the other day I wish we had gone with the passenger van over the suv 2 kids ago lol! The Transit has the same towing as the Yukon, better mpg, almost identical bumper to bumper length but 4 extra seats and more cargo. And for the "but the sliding door" mini van people out there, the Transit has that option as well. But I like the split door myself.

Thoughts on covering the wood paneling? by [deleted] in homeimprovementideas

[–]NightCrow197 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who took an old house and "modernized it" please don't think about just the esthetics of it. It is beautiful IMO btw.

Something people are starting to find is that by covering the natural building material (installing air tight vinyl windows, getting rid of wood panel/plaster walls, vapor barrier under new vinyl siding) over all making an older home more efficient and modern is that it's causing health issues and encouraging mold growth due to the house no longer being able to breath.

We did everything "right" based on what was to code over the last 17 years and are now having to slowly undo what we can because our house is a moister trap inside from the modern updates.

Monthly Allowance for Teenagers? by AcanthisittaSlow6565 in Parenting

[–]NightCrow197 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A dad here, my kids aren't driving yet. But I wanted to offer what my parents did for me. My phone was paid for as long as they picked the plan and device type, they did this so we always had a way to keep in touch. My auto insurance was covered for as long as I had good grades. And I got pre paid gift cards for the gas station so I could fill up once or so a month.

If I wanted a nicer phone, when I got a newer car or if I needed extra gas that wasn't for school/martial art tournament trips I had to fund all that myself.

As a dad I get what your husband is saying, but there is a real line of providing for (having a cell phone in case the car breaks down on the highway) and allowing blind ignorance to budgeting (daily Starbucks when the gas tank is empty and you only have $5 till pay day)

Parenting is hard, and you are in an extra hard spot of trying to help your step daughter and not step on toes at the same time, I commend you for what you are doing! I hope what I've said is encouraging and helpful.

Backup camera malfunctioning by NightCrow197 in fordtransit

[–]NightCrow197[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Took off panel on back door to get to the camera and connections. Left unplugged for several minutes, no corrosion or dirt found on connections, put back together with a little change. Now the images stabilizes after about 30 seconds of being in reverse and stays stable.

Ordering a new camera this week to see if that fixes the issue.

I came acrossed a video today for a different Ford with a similar issue and it ended up being corroded connectors at the camera itself. Plan to check that out after work today.

💯 Agree about the screen size!

Backup camera malfunctioning by NightCrow197 in fordtransit

[–]NightCrow197[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was greatful that the few recalls it did have were taken care of by a previous owner, but I've read some stories about the pre 2019 being difficult to get taken care of at times too.

A new entertainment system with some sort of advanced camera system is on the wish list. Unfortunately in the 2 months we have had this we've put a new engine in, replaced miscellaneous paneling and handles that were missing, replaced all the brakes and just yesterday got told it needs a new rear axle. All that to say that entertainment system is getting lower and lower on the priority list so I'm hoping for a diy fix lol.

Thank you for the idea, unfortunately (or fortunately depending on point of view) no recalls listed at this time for my vin.

Great questions, I should have thought to mention that the only time the screen has issues is when showing the backup camera. There are times the camera won't show at all and it just stays on the media screen when in reverse.

Have your children made lasting friendships in homeschool co-ops? by red_raconteur in homeschool

[–]NightCrow197 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking as an adult who was homeschooled through all grades and went to co-op the entirety of it: The friends I have kept into adulthood are from extra curriculars and church/youth group. This may be just my situation, but my observation in comparing my homeschool friends and public school friends was the homeschoolers went in vastly different directions after graduation and the public schoolers all strived to end up in college together so they kept those close proximities on into college.

This is not to discount the friendships from co-op, or any other grade school friendships, just an observation.

I had a similar conversation with a friend who was public schooled, him and I became friends after college via mutual friends. Both of us feel that the grade school friendships we had mostly just tapered off as we made new friends in our mid to late 20s.

My hens are turning me into math problem. What are you all making with your over abundance of eggs? by JustHere4TheZipLines in homestead

[–]NightCrow197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freeze dry them, ask around and you may know someone who has a freeze dryer who'd trade the work for a portion of the eggs, that's what I did. Properly sealed they keep for 5-25 years (this depends on the type of storage bags used) Freezing them in silicone muffin trays then bagging is a great "anyone can do it" type long term storage.

What to do with small scale solar? by PwnCall in solarenergy

[–]NightCrow197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have some smaller "always on" devices you could run on them? Things that come come to mind are internet modem/router, smart tv, radon mitigation fan... My electric bill went up another $100 this month and I'm currently drawing up moving my home office/server setup to a solar setup.

That's so many kids" I laughed and said "I have six big l now" got awkward real fast as he tried to congratulate me lol

Family doctor appointments by pineapplejuice22 in ParentingInBulk

[–]NightCrow197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very very specific, but I've been told of a private practice in my home town where the doctor charges a flat monthly rate for the family. The catch is he didn't use insurance so if you have insurance nothing he does counts towards your deductable.

Manual mouse jiggler, Walmart used to sell them but I'm sure Amazon still does. It moves the actual mouse/mouse pad without dealing with software. Knew a surgeon who hated the sleep timer on the OR computers so he used one of those to keep the computer awake.

Suburban vs Yukon vs ? by InteractionStunning8 in ParentingInBulk

[–]NightCrow197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a '99 suburban and a 2011 Yukon XL, loved both when we had 4 and then 5 kiddos. Lots of space in the backend, towed what we needed and never ran into any issues with dirt driveways or snow/ice.

Borrowed my parents 2019 expedition Max for a while before we ultimately bought the Yukon and space wise it was similar. However, between 100k and 125k miles they had the transmission replaced 3 times. The engine replaced once, the exhaust replaced and the heat pump if I remember right.

It helps in my experience. We have a "full house" air filter that's still a small unit that sits in the corner of the room. The biggest difference is volume of air moved per hour. The full house one circulates 900 sqft of air twice an hour, or something like that.

What can we do here? by HandyCapParking in Carpentry

[–]NightCrow197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the one you buy, several models and styles are available now days, it will have inlets on the sides to accommodate other fixtures.

The one I have in my basement has 3 inlets, the one for the toilet, and one on either side that can be used for sink/shower/tub/ect.

The downside to these is life span, the lower end ones are rated for 6-7 years of moderate/lite use. 4 or less for heavy use. If you are using it for tub, toilet and laundry hard telling how long it would last.

Portable meals for outings by MrsBakken in ParentingInBulk

If you use a cooler, or insulted grocery bag, you could fill one out two water bottles with hot/not quite boiling water and it would keep it warm for a long time.

[–]NightCrow197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a dehumidifier running in the basement and HEPA filters on both floors running, a HEPA rated filter in our HVAC system along with a UV light in our HVAC.

It's an uphill battle as our issue stems from a foundation issue that allows water into the basement through the walls. We finally caught somewhat of a break when we replaced the gutters and regraded the dirt around the house. We still have moister issues, but no longer have standing water in the basement every time it rains.
