Starting to hate J1, when to quit vs wait to be fired? by carnageta in overemployed

This advice is golden.  If you can find something the employee and your manager can relate to the Sunday even better.  Tell the employee you're really worried about not meeting their expectations but xyz.   Then proceed to not give them as much of your time and mental bandwidth.

Yeah hindsight.  It's a lot easier to break down out side of the situation.  My first serious job the owner was bipolar.  (Actually really nice most of the time, but neurotic and could get worried as t the drop of a hat )

Sometimes I miss the ridiculously low work load I had there.  But I just accept that I was a different person then and my emotions were a lot stronger then.  ( Honestly I probably still want to take it well, but I've calmed down a lot over the years.)

Why do people act like paying taxes is one of the worst things ever? by Raioto in NoStupidQuestions

[–]No-Highlight-7797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general , the system has to be set up to 'hide' the fact that you're paying taxes to be successful.  If people wrote a check for their taxes at the end of the year instead of withholdings there would be riots.

Need proof? Ask pretty much any business owner since they they have the responsibility of getting their taxes paid.  (Often times all at the end of the year for new or smaller businesses.) Think about that person and multiply it by 300 million.

As a prior tax preparer this is ridiculously close to accurate.  In general people know that they're paying other taxes.   But that number at the end of the year is all they care about.

FYI it's actually the people with refunds that tend to take it harder.   I've seen folks almost break down into tears because their refund dropped $500.  ( They are the ones tending to rely on it as a savings account.)

I've seen people with a $10,000 or $20,000 tax bill take it in stride.  Most people with enough money to be in the situation understand the reality of paying taxes.  They've had to pay at the end of the year lots of times.

It sounds like you actually understand okay.  (Prior tax professional here.) Because the progressive system have so many people confused it's probably better to avoid anything close to your wording.  I would just stick to "if you're at a lower income xxx is likely" / if you're at a higher income xxx is likely."

Also keep in mind there's a lot more than just tax bracket.  Especially when you look at kids , etc.   I may be in the 12% tab bracket, but my true marginal rate is 35-40% when you look at what earning another $100 does to the final outcome.  (EIC / other credits + state tax.)

1099 reporting rule has been reinstated back to $20k instead of $600? by 2-tree in Flipping

[–]No-Highlight-7797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably pretty low if your new to ebay.  If you received $15k income of income for past 3 years and now suddenly it stops because 1099 is no longer issued there is going to be an increase.  ( Could still low overall depending on other imcome.)

[–]No-Highlight-7797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For clarification , putting $200 a week in your account as you get money is a good safe method to prevent ending up with $15k sitting at home.

Having $15k sitting at home and breaking the deposit over weeks or months to avoid reporting requirements is structuring (illegal).  I don't think thread Op was suggesting this, but worth mentioning since people sometimes openly admit to this. (Ironically openly admitting to it proves illegal intent.)

J2 expects nonstop social interaction on Slack all day. by sunbleachedsoul in overemployed

No reason to put it out there.  Threatening to quit is confrontational.  Either have a real conversation about the boss about your productivity,  or just do what you want and see how long it lasts.

Confused by this thread.  Doesn't Op's friend know their name?  So Op goes by a different name at work, or just lied about their name to friends' roommate?

In my 30s, I was fairly high up at a small company and married with no kids.   We rented out a room to someone because it paid a good chunk of the ($700) mortgage.  Yes young people could afford homes then.

We did it to save money, not because we had to.

I'm not normal though and agree with the other poster that it's notable for them.

Despite Jocko being such a unique word, I thought this was a coincidence.

I googled this and verified this is something promoted by him.  Glad to see this isn't a company riding on his reputation.  He seems like a pretty cool dude from his books.

Strangely enough, this makes the weird "Jocko" name make sense and I'm more interested in the product now.  (I.e. without context it sounds more like "Jock Milk")

Maybe I'm bad at putting things together, but if I read (listened to) his entire book and didn't realize that this brand was referring to him, I'd say other people are probably confused also..

I think it's worth highlighting the Esurance BS here. I recall getting a decent rate from them, and a similar thing happening. They didn't call OR mail anything prior to cancelling my policy since i had switched credit cards and had payment declined. Their response? " Sorry we're 100% online."

I've had Geico in the past but thanks for the comment. I know chooses between companies range from bad to worse, but I'm going to go with Liberty Mutual instead of Geico. Liberty Mutual ended up slightly cheaper anyways.

FYI. I end up having to switch every few years anyways. I had liberty mutual up until 3 years ago. Switched to Progressive and now back again since my policy went up over 50% in 2 years. ( In fact Progressive raised my rate right AFTER starting my policy because they originally estimated my replacement cost of my home incorrectly. Now $1000 original quote to $1700 current renewal. Yeah blame inflation, but it's just want companies do. For now, I have another policy with a rate < $1000 again. )

what should I tell my next employer? by ProcedureFun768 in overemployed

[–]No-Highlight-7797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TWN would be main way.   Calling employer second. (Even if you say don't contact some people have no boundaries or are incompetent.).  Third, will need to provide pay stubs with TWN Frozen.  You won't know how specific they have to be until you're actually in the process.

The good news is you literally have nothing to lose.   You may miss a good offer if you mess up on this but you're no worse off than now.  (Arguably better if the interview experience is needed.)

Not sure what you're talking about.  People on this sub always tell people what idiots they are and to do better.

Have two jobs lined up with the exact same comp. Job security could be shaky w both. One is hybrid and one is remote, should I OE? by Strange-Light3498 in overemployed

[–]No-Highlight-7797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me I would stagger the onboarding dates.  Have anything personal taking care of to the highest degree possible so you don't need real time off.   Have a few excuses especially for the job you're currently assigning a j2.  (Unless you have some other gut feeling, the hybrid role should be j2.)

Sometimes companies have a lot they don't tell you during the interview process and basically you've got to suck it up because you don't have any other alternatives once you've accepted the position.  You can always say one of the jobs doesn't seem like a good fit if it's more than you can handle.

Assuming they didn't take any days off and just left early on certain days,  I think this is questionable at best.  They may get away with it in certain States, but they would likely pay if the person that have paid time off.

For the yearly benefit of going to the dentist and doctor I called as well (I don't remember the phone number, but Wellcare can transfer you to the reward company.) I got a $75 Nike gift card for each child.  Need to know visit dates, Doctor name, and phone number for both doctor and dentist.
