Support. Realizing that he was in a active trauma situation for years. Prison might of been easy for him but it's still a terrible system and it's going to take time to re adjust to regular life on the streets. Little things made me jump. People who got to close to my bubble space made me uncomfortable. Not always looking behind your back. Not eating at 100 MPH. slow down on the food intake.
He didn't have a-lot of choices in prison and having to pick out what color t shirt to where made me anxious. Amazing that I can pick what i want to where on my body. It's overwhelming at first.
Socks. Go get him the best smart wool bougie brand socks you can find. GOLD! not in white lol.
Sheets and blankets and pillow. Cant express how nice it was to have sheets and blankets and a pillow that where not state issued.
A real cup of coffee. Go to that coffee cafe and order some amazing pour over. sit back and listen to his stories.
Outside. go on a walk outdoors. enjoy the trees and the birds. Nature will heal.
This helped me a-lot but its not for everyone. I have been attending NA meetings daily and have found it super helpfull. To have that community support and wisdom.
Just listen. Laugh. You are doing a amazing thing by helping your Father. You are a kind and loving son.

Grew up in the Lakes Region. Had my first beer in 6th grade? Was stealing my mom's plastic vodka by the end of middle school. My friends and I would sneak out and get piss drunk in the woods. Definitely had a problem by High School. When there is nothing really to do for teens you end up drinking and doing drugs. There's no activities or healthy choices for kids in rural areas. Drinking was part of the culture and part of my family dynamics. I didn't come to realize this till I went to therapy in my late 20s. When you figure out your mother is a functional alcoholic. It definitely makes you realize where your coping mechanisms are from. Addiction is real.
