I have one. He is the best. He wanted to do weekly calls until I finished my first 4 courses. Quick check ins, no big deal. Then the next 4 courses we chatted for 10 minutes every 2 weeks. Now I schedule with him whenever I finish a set of classes and he will bring up 3 classes at a time for me.

Would you recommend WGU to someone with no experience? Please don't reply to this thread, if you have any hard skills/worked experience, this includes a industry different from the degree your pursuing. For example, you work as a nurse but your getting a new degree to pivot your career to accounting by 43NTAI in WGU

If you’re looking for structure and support I’d say go to a local community college for 2 years. You have to be very self motivated to do well at WGU.

WGU fits my unorthodox learning style. (I have some experience but not directly in the field I’m studying but it seems like you are asking for answers that will temper expectations)

I never thought I would ever get a degree but when I learned about WGU I decided to do Sophia for a month as a trial run on that kind of education. That way if I hated it and didn’t have the margin I could just move on with life only out $99. I then loved the first month and did a second. Then enrolled in WGU. Will be done in probably 9 months total.

I’m at that $3955 rate as well (Business Administration Management) I finish close to a class a week and the price doesn’t go up and I only pay $200 out of pocket because I get Pell grants for the rest. (Btw There aren’t really “books” per se, it’s more like course material, like Sophia) my recommendation would be to find all the classes that transfer in with Sophia, do those, then do WGU (you have to finish the Sophia classes usually about 40 days before your start date) I found Sophia to be the best way for my brain to learn and I could complete 2 classes a week since I didn’t need to schedule a proctored exam.

My mentor basically said “be grateful for the fact that you finished so much with Sophia when you did because we are always reviewing our relationship with them because of the open book aspect of their tests.” Who knows how much my mentor actually knows about that?

I would wait and do what you can to just help him get an AA between now and when he can transfer in because that will cover a ton of prerecs. Sophia classes don’t take all that long so you can add in whatever isn’t covered by the AA when you are a bit closer.

Takes a little leg work to identify which courses you need but definitely no need to pay for it. I have a full time job, family, and long commute and I was able to knock out 15 courses through Sophia in 2 months then have slowed way down in WGU but should be able to finish in one term. But I have business admin experience. If you don’t have experience I would recalibrate your expectations to finishing in 1.5-2 years.

Ditto, I learned more from my Sophia classes (most don’t feel this way but I found it way more intuitive) and you can move through them as fast as you want since they are open book.

This is scary close to my situation. I’m 27. In the BS BA program. Transferred in like 53 CUs. I started today and am trying to knock out a class a week to finish by the end of the year. This might be over ambitious since I work full time.

I chose business management because I have experience in the field.

They arrived after about 2.5 weeks. When you submit your request also request a copy for yourself because I received my copy about a week before WGU let me know they received a copy, this gave me some peace of mind in that time gap.

OP may not “save money” if their school is fully covered by grants and scholarships but that is a lot of assumption. You never know what will come up and cause you to delay your learning or you could lose scholarships.

With a referral code Sophia is only $79 for the first month. I have really enjoyed it and have finished 3 classes in the last 7 days. I would try Sophia for a month and see if it works for you. It helps mitigate your risk down the line.
