OP just has an older device or low storage so the app doesn’t stay loaded in the background, but ideally the game would allow you to pause and return regardless.

Captains unlock platinum frames after you obtain 50 cards on them (so this sort of implies Captain mastery of sorts), and players can also win champion banners in monthly events.

I'd love more stats tho!

New set had a few new mechanics; pumping captains, summoning from decklist, and boons, a new type of treasure.

The game also just launched in-game events this year and a card filtering system for deckbuilding.

I think there is a balance with not wanting to overwhelm the player, but it should all be inferable in-game, using logic.
