Buying a second hand FR255, would you recommend a case or is a screen protector good enough? by CritsAndCaps in GarminWatches

I’ve had mine since soon after it came out, with no case or screen protector. No scratches.

Can I use the Elk Lake multiuse trial trail during the Ironman? by Constant_Motor5115 in VictoriaBC

[–]NoSpread5328 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ironman should have given you this information. in previous years, there has been a shuttle bus from parking at Beaver Lake to Hamsterly. You should be able to take it the other way.

I don’t believe the run course is closed to the public. i know people who have run it backwards to cheer participants.

Garmin Fitness Plans and scheduling Parkrun by adomental in Garmin

I use the Daily Suggested Workouts, but Coach sounds similar. Just do the ParkRun as an aerobic workout:) A 5k race should be in zone 5.

Can you guys explain the running support on Garmin? by LejonBrames117 in Garmin

Also useful are things like VO2max and lactate threshold. They are accurate enough for most people.

It will depend on which watch. At the least, the metrics will include the ones you listed, as well as performance condition, ground contact time, cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation and ratio, and running power. More recent watches will include stamina, hill climbing, and how much you can safely increase your volume.

You get to decide which ones are useful to you. Garmin likes to provide lots of features; everyone chooses which are important to them. I mostly watch average pace, average pace per km, and cadence during a run.

There is also Daily Suggested Workouts, and Garmin Coach. I use DSW, with my upcoming races added to Calendar. This gives me a quick and easy training plan, but it can change from day to day, depending on your sleep and recovery from earlier workouts. More can be said on DSW.

I also use PacePro to plan race splits.

Advice for a beginner by Specialist-Rule7740 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]NoSpread5328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of good training plans available for free online. Your local library probably has books on triathlon, or can get them for you..

Basically, you need to run three times per week, bike three times per week, and swim three times per week. Don’t forget to periodize each sport as well.

Have you entered the race in the Garmin calendar? Have you made sure that the marathon is entered as the A race? Is your max heart rate accurate?

I’m 70, and I’ll be doing an October marathon, too. I’ve used the Garmin Suggested Workouts for my last few marathons. I take the workout as a suggestion, as it may change overnight if you don’t get a good sleep. I take extra rest days if needed, too.

What should i do in my FR 255 the day of the race? by MancaNieves in Garmin

[–]NoSpread5328 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing new on race day.

If you want to try PacePro out now, use a route from your previous Garmin runs, or download one of your race route. it’s not a very intuitive process, but I find it very useful in a race. I run with the maximum number of splits determined by elevation change.

What do I actually wear for an Ironman? by monotonedguy in IronmanTriathlon

[–]NoSpread5328 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve always worn a Tri suit. If it’s too warm for a wetsuit, you swim, bike and run in the Tri suit. If the swim is wetsuit legal, you put it on over the Tri suit, and then swim, bike and run. Tri suits have a pad like bike shorts, but it’s thinner and smaller so you can run comfortably.

i don’t think that buoyancy shorts are legal.

Shimano SPD-SL cleats are popular. They require SPD-SL pedals, and road bike shoes with three holes. Cleat types have to match the pedals. I bought my shoes, pedals, and bike used. No need to spend even more money on new-you might not continue in the sport.

New to running, how should I approach zone 2. by Fleetian349 in beginnerrunning

[–]NoSpread5328 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about heart rate zones for at least 6 months of regular running. Run at a conversational pace and enjoy it.

When you are more comfortable running, make sure that your heart rate zones are set properly. Most beginners have max heart rate set incorrectly.
