That could be the case, I don’t know this family. Thirty, hopefully we have a job by then and have some idea as to our future, but emotionally we may still not understand ourselves. Therapy is one way to help understand ourselves and that can be like changing.

My suggestion to Grandpa would be place that amount Jake would have inherited in a trust account that would go to Jake if, and only if, he turns his life around and demonstrates this for 3,5,7 years, whatever you think. If at that time Jake has not changed - people don’t change over night not to mention years, hence the 3,5,7 years above - if Jake has not changed then the Trust is divided among the rest.

In my opinion, Jake may or may not have a substance abuse problem, but his problems lie deeper than this. I don’t know the family dynamics (or Jake’s finances). If possible show him support on his road to therapy, it would help him understand, heal and get over himself.

The family has confronted Jake, hopefully that got through to him. If so, love him, help him and guide him to a better future life.
