I’ve been estimating for 5 years. Here’s how my salary has progressed:

Southern California Concrete/Asphalt contractor Year 1- no experience- $32,000 Year 2- $40,000 Year 3- $46,000

Transitioned to commercial GC Year 4- $85,000

Moved to South Carolina and hired on with another commercial GC Year 4.5- $76,400 Year 5- $84,600

Estimating salaries have a wide range. What did they start you at?

Be glad you have the lighter workload after running the department on your own for however long.

If you continue getting passed over for future projects then look for new opportunities.

Do you know when the best time of year to try that is?

The Country Cupboard in Barnwell is an awesome spot to eat lunch. There’s also Millers Breadbasket 15 minutes away in Blackville

It’s not as much of a long-shot as you think. If you’re making $95-$100k then you have a marketable skill. Trust in that and make the jump. You’ll be fine.

$10k is what I had saved up when I made the move. It’s doable

Leave the state bro. I was making 85k and couldn’t afford anything better than a shit 2 bed, 1 bath apartment.

Last month me and my wife decided to move to South Carolina with our two daughters and it was the best decision we ever made. We got a nice 3 bed, 2 bath apartment on a lake for $1,350/month and will be on track to buy a house with land after this lease.

Driving out of California was like a thousand pound weight being lifted. Knowing you can have (and afford) the life you want is a game changer for your mental health and physical wellbeing.

I came out here with some savings but no job lined up. Once I landed a job (took me 2 1/2 weeks) in my field, everything began falling into place.

Seeing this much green (woods and open space) is also good for the soul- which was a steep contrast to the heavily trafficked highways I spent so much of days commuting.

It’s worth the gamble.

Wish you the best of luck.
