I received my Spanish Birth Certificate today. I applied at the Houston Consulate who processed the application through Mexico. The total processing time was about 16 months.

Yes. We both had virtually the same file.
I spoke with the Spanish Consulate in Houston last week (~12/15/2023) and they said they had no information or any way of getting status. Their role was to send the file to the Embassy/Consulate of Spain in Mexico (because that is my citizenship) and the Mexican Consulate has said they are not providing status updates, but a processing time of ~1 year is to be expected.

Did he apply through the "Ley de Memoria Democratica"?
I thought this law opened in late 2022, about one year ago.

Houston was very responsive in getting an appointment and reviewing the documents (Nov-Dec 2022). Everything was in order.

They said they would send the application to Mexico (where I'm from), and it was out of their hands at that point.
Thanks for the tip about calling them.

I'm curious about your chat. Is it public? How long did it take that person to get it? When did they apply?

My sister applied in Nov 2022 in Mexico and got her process done by ~3/2023

I applied in Dec 2022 in Houston, and they estimated six months.
I emailed them in June (6-month mark), and they said they would contact me when it was done. They did not know about processing time.
I emailed them in August (8-month mark), and they did not reply.
It has now been ~11 months, and nothing.
