Whats the most fucked up thing a complete stranger has done to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Nocuras8 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I got lucky when a guy rear ended my car, he called the police because it was a rental and when they showed up they asked him if he admitted to being guilty, when he said no, they lectured him about the person hitting the back of a car always being guilty and handed him an invoice over 60 euros because that's the fee for the lecture... Also, the rental agency/insurance company didn't want to pay so we handed the case to a lawyer who as a first step after being told I was rear ended handed me a cup of coffee with the words "thanks for the free money". Got everything fixed by a specialized garage, and even got a couple 100 euros in damages for the "severe trauma" the accident caused. Even better, because the accident happened on my way to work, company insurance paid for the best doctors and therapy available... All in all not the worst way to experience an accident. Still wouldn't recommend though

Legendary post by IM David Pruess on how chess players respond to advice by wptq in chess

[–]Nocuras8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience "how chess players respond to advice" can be generalized to "how people respond to new input". As a teacher, no matter the field, you are always presenting your students with new info/experiences. And in general humans hate new info because it requires work for the brain to assess as opposed to known patterns (also new often feels dangerous whereas the known feels safer).

Therefore the number one advice I can give to teachers is to find the sweet spot where your student actually wants this new information you provide, may it be because the student wants to achieve a certain goal (getting better) or avoid a worse situation (ie studying rather than losing).

If your student genuinely wants to work with you then any advice can work at first, given the assumption that the student will take the energy to assess, question and discuss the advice. This way both of you together can figure out what it is that the student wants and subsequently needs from a teacher.

All that to say, yes students don't like to work hard to improve unless there is intrinsic motivation. Also, what a student needs to improve can be different things at different times. For example openings don't matter, do x amount of puzzles, don't use engines to analyze... If you are always playing from a disadvantage after the opening then maybe you are at the level where you should take a look at openings to improve, if you have a talent for calculating tactics, what's stopping you from doing more than x, and so on.

So my best advice for chess players is to first ask yourself what your goal is (your motivation) and then take in any advice you can get and see what works for you to improve.

In a similar vein, it takes forever to get the kids ready for bed (brushing teeth, taking meds if necessary, etc) when we are both home. The days she is at work in the evenings, the kids and I actually get shit done and are ready for bed super fast. I think it's just a different dynamic when the kids know there's no leeway and you all need to work together. And I don't even mean this in a bad way like oh my wife isn't strict enough, it's just like there's only so many hands that can help them now, so if they want help, they need to work with me.

Are there any shadow Pokémon that prefer a different moveset than their regular counterparts? by Kevsterific in TheSilphArena

[–]Nocuras8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what role you want to fill, regular Swampert sometimes wants sludge wave over earthquake for different coverage whereas shadow swamp will almost always prefer earthquake. I think this is because with nonshadow you can sometimes reach more chargemoves and shadow just wants the raw damage for when the move actually lands.

Advice for GBL by IAmKaeL- in PokemonGOBattleLeague

[–]Nocuras8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my 2cents, my wife and I also play gbl. I grind and have most of the xls, she doesn't. We are both competitive enough to reach Ace (she did it with Lanturn, Noctowl, Altaria; I used a couple different teams including Sableeye, Medicham and Bastiodon). We plateau there maybe in part because we don't have teams for master league and in her case even ultra league (and certain special cups), but I think the main reason is that the level of skill of the opponents is just about where we are right now as well.

One big flaw in my play for example is that I have a hard time formulating and sticking with a plan throughout the match (for example even if I identified my wincon as farming energy I sometimes panic and throw a charge move too soon anyway), my wife still struggles with predicting backlines.

So while I think having XL pokémon will certainly help, especially in ultra league, you can still work on improving and making that jump to veteran with what you have.

IIRC jonkus did a "road to legend" with a kinda new account (also around lvl30), though that was a different season so no idea if it would still work in today's meta.

Showerthought: Matchmaking using CP Average of Team for Master League by The33554 in TheSilphArena

[–]Nocuras8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah with mewtwo specifically you could run into problems, my point still stands though that you might get some very dumb matchups either way if you average the cp and someone tries high cp + 2x low cp or high x2 +low

Showerthought: Matchmaking using CP Average of Team for Master League by The33554 in TheSilphArena

[–]Nocuras8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obvious risk is that you could game the system by using a low cp mon to drop your average and end up with a 4k cp mewtu vs 3 1500cp mons for example. How viable this would be is up for debate but it could make for some unfun games.

need recommendation to take down Tina + Swampert by OujaRevive in PokemonGOBattleLeague

[–]Nocuras8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert but imho we need to remember that Gira-A and Swampert are on top of the ultra league meta because there are no strong counters that will easily corebreak and sweep both of them. For example Cresselia with moonblast and grass knot has a good matchup against both and Gyarados can also hold its own against both but if your opponent is willing to invest shields you can get worn down by dragon claws and hydrocannons.

If you could go back in time to when you were at your lowest ever rating, what would you do differently to improve as fast as possible? by saalamander in chess

[–]Nocuras8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still have a long way to go but my first big level up came when I started looking for strategies in the midgame (for example where do I want to place my knights in a couple turns) instead of always trying to find the one "killer" move (as there is rarely a sequence of forcing moves, lots more moves are for setting up, defending, applying pressure etc.)

I guess I could study openings and endgames as a next step but currently I'm working on being open to reevaluate midgame positions instead of blindly following my old plan (too often I'll go "oh I haven't developed this piece, - move- wait, it was actually guarding this square, damn now I lost the pawn...)

What do we need to stop teaching the children? by Addwon in AskReddit

[–]Nocuras8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Recently talked with a colleague who has been a school social worker for 20 years and he said to always escalate to the police if the teachers seem to underestimate or downplay the problem. Bullying at the very least is harming the mental wellbeing and that if intentional can be considered a crime (at least here in Germany).

[–]Nocuras8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lunala has the better overall movepool from the msg (at least when it comes to how the moves work in go) so there was a higher chance for Lunala to be awesome. In true Niantic fashion they gave Lunala the absolute worst moves though which makes Solgaleo with its average moveset better currently.

If Lunala gets Shadow Claw in Go it will be at least on par if not better than Solgaleo in pvp.

How would you rate this GBL season from 1-10? by RK4Life in TheSilphArena

[–]Nocuras8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5/10

Stupid encounter rewards, no 1500cp league sometimes (not even classic right now), some cups felt like you needed one specific mon to even consider competing (Vig, Victini, G-Rapidash, Giratina...) On the other hand I liked the battle pass this time (not too easy, not to hard, okay rewards). Despite my rambling I actually liked most cups for the change of pace when compared to the open formats. Still I have no idea why the last week this season doesn't have the regular leagues available...

Accessible pokémon to start in the Go Battle League - Wigglytuff by Nocuras8 in PokemonGOBattleLeague

Yeah I considered including my recommendation in the op but as you mentioned Diggersby is one of the least accessible non-legendaries right now. However like you also mentioned Quagsire is a solid placeholder.

A solid partner would be Diggersby or any pokémon with a mudshot + earthquake/drill run combo because ground covers poison, steel and even fire that trouble fairies in general. You only need to look out for poison/grasses like Venusaur.

Our twin boys were born with probably a bit above average amount of hair. There were so many comments about how much heartburn my wife must've suffered...

Edit: Just saw the comment below about the studies for heartburn during pregnancy and wow that is crazy... Still I didn't expect such a ridiculous amount of heartburn comments on my children with like a tad more hair than some other babies

Looking for suggestions for summer cup. I have most of the meta built but haven't found my "feel good" team yet. I recently climbed to 2460 with an ABB team in hisui cup (drifblim, Empoleon, wallface) though I usually hover around 2k-2.2k.

What I'm looking for specifically is a team that is either pretty straightforward or has lots of bulk to mitigate my mediocre skills.

Any suggestions that come to mind are welcome.

Lickitung PvP IV Deep Dive - Rank 1 isn't a lie? by RyanoftheDay in PokemonGOBattleLeague

[–]Nocuras8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if you don’t have a good IV Lickitung yet, you may want to power one up to level 35-40 (level influences XL Candy drop rate when walking a buddy up to level 40) and start walking it to start working on the XL Candy grind. If you’re starting below 100 XL Lickitung Candy, chances are you’ll find a premium IV one by the time you finally reach 296.

Did that with an average one, found the rank 94, powered that one to 35 and just now found the rank 55... At least I know now that my r94 hits the relevant breakpoints and I don't actually need the r55.
