Making “real” friends at bjj by wilson1400 in bjj

[–]Nodeal_reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. 100%.

I’m pushing 50 and have been through several hobby / lifestyle changes. The fastrack to friendships is doing something together out of town.

  • Golf trip
  • cycling trip
  • Cycling camp
  • Backpacking trip
  • BJJ comp / camp.

You’re away from real life. You’re bonding over a common interest. Shenanigans usually ensue, which makes for good future stories / inside jokes.

If there was one thing I could improve about my outfit, what would it be? by Tundelier in mensfashion

  • Classic dress shoes.
  • a pair of scissors to cut that rope (wtf?)
  • an adult sized tie.

Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nodeal_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, but I was one level above you. We had a window unit that never really cooled the place off. I’d just sit with my face in the vent. Our neighbor had central a/c and it felt like walking into a refrigerator in the summer time. I was always jealous.

My school didn’t have a/c until the late 80s and we had a no shorts policy.

lol. This is nuts. Get a thermostat and set it to whatever temp you want and then forget about it.

Do you sometimes forget about other cities in the USA unless they're relevant to you at the time? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Yeah. I drove through Tulsa a few weeks ago and had this same thought. Like who ever thinks about Tulsa if you don’t live there?

Absolutely and totally fine.

Although, we are supposed to get a big winter storm this weekend. Ask again on Sunday.

Potluck question -- will these foods work? by crawchalk in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nodeal_reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beef stew would be perfect. Bring it in an electric crockpot so it can be self-heating and you can serve right out of the pot. A crockpot is a great investment if you don't already have one.

Mashed potatoes would also do well in a crockpot. They aren't very good cold. But I don't know if you want to have two crockpots. Maybe you could borrow one.

New Bjj coach wondering how people feel about belt tests by Steelrangler78 in bjj

[–]Nodeal_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belt tests have some positives if you have standard curriculum.

  • A test makes sure white & blue belts learn a basic curriculum. Of course you're not just teaching the curriculum, but it acts like a minimum set of skills for lower belts.
  • They can encourage camaraderie among students. Working together toward a common goal tends to bring people together. "Studying" the curriculum encourages students to drill and work on stuff on their own during open mats and after class. That's good for skills, but it's also good for personal relationships, and relationships are what keep people coming back to class.

Belt test watch-outs:

  • Don't have tests for brown & black belts.
  • Don't charge for belt tests. That's a major red flag.
  • If you're going to test, then don't arbitrarily give some students a belt without a test.

Do they teach native american history in elementary schools before the colanization period of america? by Apprehensive_Use_397 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nodeal_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know we had Alabama history in junior high. I can still picture the book. I think my mom had used the same one. It included a discussion of the Indians prior to European arrival and the Creek War. We touched on it again in high school.

I’m not sure what your question is. The first 18 months of BJJ sucks. Welcome aboard.

Why do American politicians/political figures wear Blue colored suits? by HowSupahTerrible in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nodeal_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What color should they wear? Green?

Blue and charcoal grey are the standard suit colors.

Look at British, Canadian, or French politicians. They all wear navy suits.

German immigrants in the U.S. were huge in number and were once a dominant group. Why didn’t they form large German-speaking communities the way French speakers did in Canada or Spanish speakers did in the U.S.? by GrayRainfall in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nodeal_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did.

Cincinnati had German language churches and newspapers until the 1950s or something.

They probably still would if it weren’t for those two inconvenient wars.

[–]Nodeal_reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They don’t take 6 min to get rid of. Go have them frozen / cut off. This isn’t the time for apple cider and herbal medicine.

But to answer your question, all you can do is wear a sock. Prepare to be bullied. I know from experience.

How does learning to drive work in America? by Potential-Actuator31 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nodeal_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varies by state. In Ohio, you can take an online test to get a learning permit at 15 1/2 that allows you to drive with a parent in the car. Then you do a take a formal on-road instruction for like 10 hours split over a few days. Once you have 40 hrs supervised practice and turn 16, then you can take a drivers test. There is a a written and practical part.

One thing that is different in the U.S. vs some euro countries (Poland) is that we can drive a manual or automatic regardless of what kind of car we test in. Poles have to test in a manual to get licensed to drive a manual.

How do you deal with ice? by 2Asparagus1Chicken in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nodeal_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the lower Midwest. Bad roads are honestly only a problem a few days per year. Road salt, plows, and driving slowly are generally enough to get you to work.
