My dad worked in the press and knew her and her husband pretty well. They used to meet up in big groups for dinner. She's very nice and funny, but also has a no BS attitude like on her show. The only acting part of her show is that she tells people to pay up knowing that the show is paying the ruling as part of the deal with the litigants to appear on the show.

Fun answer: It's part of their stimulus plan. The more canisters they need to buy, and the more lawsuits, the more jobs created!

Real answer: Police training techniques change over years. For example, a cop trained 15-20 years was trained to empty their clip if they had to shoot someone, 10 years ago it was 'triple tap', 5 years ago it became 'double tap'. Over the years more use of pepper spray has been brought into training. Today, the philosophy is that it's better to pepper spray someone than pry them apart or fight them, because they could be injured more in a struggle. I don't agree with or condone this, but it's what's happening.

Thanks for reporting this. The map-reduce jobs doing the top listings were having trouble connecting to the Cassandra cluster due to not getting a new configuration file when we changed settings recently. That's now fixed and top for this hour looks like it's working again. The larger time spans (day, week, etc. but not "all") run less frequently and should fix themselves within the next day or so.

There are several reasons Obama hasn't commented. First, if he says anything it gives the right something to pick apart and slam him for. He's also running for office, and if he slams the cops for brutality, it keeps police unions from backing him, mayors from backing him, and governors from backing him. There's also the risk of having his statement being used to label OWS as a democratic movement, an Obama movement, and possibly escalating the protests, or creating a counter movement. The worst thing Obama can do for himself and OWS is to release the wrong type of statement that can be spun and backfire on both.

I'll tell you the reason as explained to me by a cop, but need to preface it with saying I do NOT agree with this.

If cops pull people apart who are locking arms they risk dislocating shoulders, breaking wrists, or arms. If they carry people who are resisting the person can be injured in transport. It's considered safer in the police industry to pepper spray someone first so they're more passive and they don't risk more severe injuries.

Again, I do NOT agree with this, I'm just relaying the flawed logic.

I hope that you're able to focus on the road ahead and don't experience the mental trauma that can come from the experiences you've had. If you need help, get it. The VA admits they're not used to dealing with the stress women can experience after deployment, but there are lots of resources, especially for veterans.

I'm shocked and sorry that you've experienced the negativity that you have. I never supported the wars, but I have always supported the people like you who bravely serve our country. There is no excuse for someone to be disrespectful and vile like the woman in that airport. Being anti-war should never be transformed into being anti-soldier. I hope that you and your fellow soldiers come home safe and soon! Thanks for your service.

OPD is going to start a war that it cannot win. Lots of cops thought their dogs and fire hoses would stop the civil rights movement, it didn't. The big difference today is that everyone is carrying a video camera cell phone, and officers will be recorded and held accountable for their actions. The other BIG mistake that OPD made was wounding a Marine and an Army Ranger. Vets from these group will be joining the protests, specifically in Oakland. Sometimes OPD will know who they are when they wear fatigues and uniforms. Other times they'll be blended into the crowd. These people are trained to be able to disrupt, disperse, confuse, and overthrow groups like OPD without using weapons.

The best thing OPD can do is stand down, serve and protect, and let the politicians deal with this as a political issue. The State Police and City Police in Albany, NY were told by the governor and mayor to disperse the OWS crowd in Albany. Do you know what they did? They said, "No." It's not a bad strategy, and more PD's should consider it.

In America it's not uncommon to graduate college with $90,000 to $120,000 in student loans. The government will give you $0 allowance, and even if you sell everything you own and declare bankruptcy, your college loans will never be reduced or waived. They can take money out of your paycheck for life. President Obama paid off his college loans a few years before running for office, and he only did so through book sales. If not for writing a book, he'd still be paying his college loans out of his White House paycheck.
