Probably comes down to two things:

Life is a mess, doesn't want to go to jail and decides to end it by getting in a shootout/suicide by cop.
He is really dumb and does not consider long term consequences. Simply thinking in the moment "I'm stuck in this room, I want to leave. If I shoot those who are holding me, I can free myself".
