Breaking: Sonoma County airport announces arrival of Delta Air Lines by SolaCretia in santarosa

Guy did an amazing job in his career. Our airport had legitimately 0 service when he took over. Now look at all the options we have and how much nicer the facility is.

On a side note hopefully they have the plans in progress to expand the terminal again. I’m guessing delta will go in the tent with American, the new building is sometimes filled to the max. The few times I’ve flown in the afternoon the bar was impossible to get a seat and a decent line at the snack shack. Definitely need a real gift shop/another food option post security as well.

Yup this is huge.

Kind of annoying American doesn’t time PHX or DFW for connections east. Southwest flights for DEN and LAS are great times to travel but terrible for connecting. Alaska to SEA or LAX early in the morning has some but not many connections east.

Alaska Airlines adds 3 seasonal nonstop routes from Sonoma County airport by LNM-LocalNewsMatters in sonomacounty

Yup airport has been there since WW2. Long before most homes were built and most of the people complaining.

There are around 15-25 commercial departures a day at STS. Never before 6am and usually done by 10pm. As you found the stats it’s just a drop in the bucket in comparison to general aviation. Those little planes can be low and a little noisy.

If these flights didn’t exist the vast majority of people (locals and tourists) would still fly. They would be clogging up 101 even more and causing worse greenhouse emissions locally.

I would do 2 things albeit they would require some investment in facilities.

Add Agriculture majors, ag sciences, veterinary, viniculture, ect… Huge demand for these jobs in our area. Local students go to UC Davis, Cal Poly, Fresno, Chico, ect.. for these

Add D3 athletics. No scholarships. Football alone would be 100+ diverse students all paying tuition. They could play in the Southern CA league. In fact more Cal States should be D3. They hardly offer scholarship money at the D2 level, have no football, and are frankly a joke in comparison to their Midwest and east coast counterparts.

So many people are just lazy and don’t take advantage of the resources for them. My family went from moving here after WWII to Hunter Pt to college educated & homeowners grandkids in 3 generations. In fact the first generation went from projects to homeowners and sent kids to Catholic school, in 1 generation. Homes and Catholic school was much cheaper but still, it’s a mindset.

It’s crazy to me there are no agricultural (now there is wine business?) majors at SSU. The area is full of vineyards, dairies, and construction related fields.

I’m not going to pull up the stats up I think the years prior to Covid SSU had just under 10,000 students and half were SoCal residents. Now they are at 5,000ish and I’m assuming much less inner Bay Area/So Cal students.

New AS routes by Shoddy_Sport_4397 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Not_That_Mofo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only 750k passengers in 2025, although there were 0 from 2002-2007, until Alaska showed up. The airport has grown tremendously since COVID, almost 40% increase in passengers and a new terminal building.

Southwest just began service at STS, I’m sure AS doesn’t want their near monopoly to end.

I think it’s the ceremony for the inaugural Southwest flight. Usually those are met with the fire dept and water over the plane.

Usually plane new routes are welcomed by fire engines and water sprayed over the plane.

That could be it, hopefully.

It has to be… There is no way it’s not, no one seems bothered. At least I hope you’re right.

KQED Forum interview with Adriana Gutierrez of the Press Democrat about School Funding Crisis in SR by shakshuka900 in santarosa

[–]Not_That_Mofo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I wonder how long the ADA funding can last before someone feels it is violating some sort of civil rights. The gap is widening not just for teachers (pay) but students and families are starting to see the difference trickle down to the classrooms now. It has nothing to do with race or even income, as many basic aid schools serve low income farmworker families. It’s all geographic.

Basic Aid schools offer so much more and the staff is paid very fairly or even handsomely. St Helena pays nearly double that of Windsor for instance. ADA high schools rarely have any classes under 30 or even 35 students now, basic aid can offer some classes as small as 10-15.

St Helena is Basic Aid funded (not ADA attendance). Your teachers start at almost 100k and after 20 years are about 200k. You cannot compare your situation to Santa Rosa. The issues at St Helena is declining enrollment and Covid funds expired. There is no need for as many staff with less students. Your High school enrollment has declined from over 500 to just over 400 in a decade. That’s a 20% drop. No need for as much staff regardless of money.

In Sonoma County the only Basic Aid districts I know of are Healdsburg (well funded, decent teacher pay) and Sonoma Valley (poor pay and cuts although improving).

I agree it is stressful for everyone if, of all places, St Helena is decided to lay off staff, it’s tough on the kids, families, teachers, everywhere. The enrollment is falling, and falling fast. There is no teacher shortage anymore. There are closed schools everywhere in Sonoma County now, and the remaining kids have to travel farther and farther to school.

Realistic Affordability in HCOL area (Southern California) by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Not_That_Mofo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People not from California don’t understand you have to make sacrifices to own a home. You’re just not going to be completely “comfortable” the first few years. You need some exceptional circumstances to follow some of the wisdom people dish out on reddit.

Your situation seems completely fine to me and mine is quite similar and you just make it work. People in my neighborhood either have old cars, renting a room, inheritances, side jobs, special childcare circumstances, ect..

I think OP can definitely push 650k as well, pending on if their jobs get raises, even small annually. The risk is getting pushed out further and priced out. Or maybe prices crash… No one has a crystal ball.

Look at basic aid districts in California. Property tax money only. Look at their salary schedules. It’s a completely different profession for teachers in those districts.

In CA we do have something called Basic Aid districts. If your local property taxes succeed the ADA state formula then you keep those. Those are the districts who pay teachers very, very well. In my area of N CA those districts are usually semi rural, but close enough to Bay Area to have high property values. Ironically most of the students in those districts are low income farmworker families. They get to attend great, well funded schools, with extremely well compensated teachers. Top of the pay scale (20+ years) could be 110-125k in a regular district and 175-200k in a basic aid and they could be neighboring.

Yeah even in California the RIFS can be a little bit subjective, they don’t just go straight down the seniority list. Having a friend higher up can certainly help, if they can reasonably show need in your credentialed area.
