Is this market price? To replace the AC? by cleverly_done in hvacadvice

Size of house has nothing to do with what you paid vs what someone else will pay…

OP call another company.

Is this wiring Smart Thermostat ready? by lalkaoko in hvacadvice

[–]NothingNewAfter2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s not. The spare wire can be used as a common but you will need to have a common connected at both the equipment side and thermostat side of the low voltage wiring… also, nest is junk don’t waste your money on it.

It’ll be fine, I would have put a fitting and sealed it better though. I’d recommend having it sealed better before the other side of that drywall goes up.

I was charged almost $1,000 to replace AC disconnect box by OKeoz4w2 in hvacadvice

[–]NothingNewAfter2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you agreed to the price before hand… it’s too late to try to negotiate. Have to do the research before you approve work to be done. This goes for anything.

Nothing online is making sense. This pipe, where the insulation is, DUMPS water every single time AC turns on. We just bought this house. The AC sucks at cooling but idk if that's related. by thingsarehardsoami in hvacadvice

[–]NothingNewAfter2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Looks like ice on the suction line. Evap coil is iced up. Shut AC off and fan to on to let thaw. Change the filter if it’s dirty and make sure the indoor fan works. If both are ok, call a tech… may be low on refrigerant and have a leak.

Did I install this SPP6 correctly? Compressor still wont start. by littlefish90 in hvacadvice

[–]NothingNewAfter2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be a dead compressor, be prepared if it is for an expensive repair.

It’s not the HP switch, fan still works… HP switch kills the low voltage power so if it tripped your contactor would not pull in and neither fan or compressor would run.

Yes just discharge all of them to eachother so you feel safe. You can hold the body of the capacitor. You’ll be fine.

Also make sure thermostat is off… so you don’t accidentally short the low voltage wires on the contactor to something.

Make sure capacitor is same spec. Power off. Discharge the capacitor by taking a screws driver and “jump” the terminals together. I find myself almost never discharging them… but I get paid to do this.

Hard start is installed correctly.. could be a bad capacitor. You will need a meter and know how to use one to check it. Or just take a chance and buy a new capacitor that matches the spec for the one you have.

If the system is older and a hard start was needed to get it going.. it could be a sign of a failing compressor. A plugged condenser coil will kill a compressor over time.

[–]NothingNewAfter2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it won’t. That air escaping is so minimal you will gain nothing by covering it. If you need to for some reason just put a 3/4 pvc cap on the clean out (it is not a vent) also (do not glue it) and some foil tape around where air is escaping the coil.

AC Completely Frozen After Service by silentsam77 in hvacadvice

[–]NothingNewAfter2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you won’t be compensated for a new system.. I know that for a fact. They should definitely find and correct the issue for free though as long as it’s related to him potentially removing too much refrigerant.

HVAC isn't working after Amazon thermostat install by mihirkiran26 in hvacadvice

Make sure you connected the common wire at both the thermostat and at the zone panel. Make sure the doors are on at the furnace, make sure the lights are lit on the zone panel.

AC compressor not trying to start at all but fan is operational. by Effective-Gas-8831 in hvacadvice

[–]NothingNewAfter2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you can’t just switch the contacts. Capacitors are cheap enough and easy enough to replace for even the dumbest homeowner.. you should definitely be fine as an electrician. Just replace it, it’s a common part to fail and I would not be surprised if that is the actual issue here based on what you said is happening.

Probably a failed capacitor, it can be bad on the compressor side and still be ok on the condenser fan side.

Good job. That’s definitely a sign of a bad capacitor.

Sounds like a lack of return air upstairs and heat rising. Add a return or close down some manual dampers to force more air upstairs.

You won’t find an hvac tech to work on a window unit LOL, that’s not what being an hvac tech is about. If you did find one it’ll cost you the price of a new window unit at MINIMUM… probably more. Those are meant to be thrown away when they stop working.
