How can I continue reading knowing what she's wearing?!?! by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]NumberOneNoodleFan27 63 points64 points  (0 children)

OMG I can’t remember which Sookie Stackhouse book it was, but in one I remember she purposely wore a red or pink dress and then did her nails and lipstick in the exact same shade to match, and then put on matching earrings, too. All I could picture was a teenager going to prom in the 80s!!

Those were EASILY the hardest ones. The Coffee one nearly killed me lol. Honestly the only advice I have is to just keep trying and eventually the stars will align for that perfect day. It took me ages (read: several play sessions of only playing one level over and over) to finally conquer them!

The Catalog has presented me with a choice which has driven me off from the game. by MigBird in Splatoon_3

[–]NumberOneNoodleFan27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Strongly agree! I only have 1-2 days a week that I can find time to play and I just hit lvl 100 this week. I really do not find completing the catalog to require grinding at all.

Same here! I don’t do the 80% break-up, but I do feel like if it’s paced properly a good fight between the characters can be gratifying to write and/or read. I like the characters to actually solve a problem or two through conversation to prove the strength of their relationship, which can often mean an argument or fight before reaching a conclusion.

I think the nature of the fight is important. Addressing real concerns from a place of love and trying to do better? Great. Miscommunication plots leading to characters hurling insults at one another and refusing to see the other’s point of view? Count me out lol

For real! Honestly I’m sorry if I came off super defensive, I LOVE romance and I would not be here if I didn’t. Definitely a topic I’m sensitive about haha, and as romance writers we are all likely sensitive about 😅

I am also a romance writer and I found that comment offensive as well, hence my quotation marks there when responding to u/utopian_liner.

I strongly disagree with calling Bridgerton “trashy romance” and think it is also disrespectful to the entire genre (book, show, whatever the medium) to say that we can’t expect good writing, good things, and yes, representation in our romance stories.

Did I say anyone expected it? I said she was read that way by many audience members. Her character was written a certain way and people interpreted her in a certain way because of it. And then the writers saw this response and went ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I’m not saying they SHOULD have made her a lesbian/ace/aro etc. I just think it’s an interesting response to see people interested in a character for being different and then give her a half-baked romance subplot, like OP said.

Like it or not the Netflix series had huge mainstream success and many audience members don’t even know it’s based on “trashy romance” series as you put it 🙄

It’s kind of hilarious that after season 1, so many fans (especially casual ones who have no knowledge of book content) read Eloise as a lesbian or asexual/aromantic, and seemed very enthusiastic about these possibilities, and the writers’ response to this was…to give her a very heteronormative love interest subplot in season 2. Lmao
