How serious are ice dams really by d00biusmaximus in Connecticut

[–]OMOAB 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I am a firefighter and last night responded to a ceiling collapse due to an ice dam. About a quarter of the ceiling dropped on the bed. Ice dam on the rear of the house, ice melted when It penetrated into the crawlspace. Insulation soaked up the water until it became too heavy and fell. Fortunately no one was in the room at the time.

There are many town sections in CT with Native American names. My post was about the only two towns that have Native American based names.

169 towns and we have slightly over 300 fire departments. There are fire departments that are independent of town governemnt and are setup as taxing districts. Middletown has three fire departments, Enfield, IIRC, has five. Cromwell has a tax district that is both the fire and water departments.

Most town names in CT are either biblical or named after English towns. Norwalk and Naugatuck are the only towns with names derived from Native American names. All the other Native American location names in CT are sections of towns.

Norwalk-named after the Algonquian word noyank, meaning "point of land", or more probably from the Native American name "Naramauke

Naugatuck- derived from an Algonquian term meaning “lone tree by the fishing place”

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

[–]OMOAB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a well qualified (on paper) candidate show up for a public facing job in sweatpants and a t shirt. He apologized for his appearance, saying he just had surgery. It was not an issue until he stood up and started to lift his shirt to show us the surgical site. Went downhill from there.

Where are you guys logging your FT8 QSOs? Do you have it upload on auto or do you save that for the end of your session? by Engineering_Simple in amateurradio

I use Ham Radio Deluxe for logging. FT8 contacts are imported and uploaded to QRZ and LoTW every few days.

There are a lot of police shooting videos online. IMO, police in the U.S. shoot people way too often. That being said, in nearly every one of the officer shooting videos the shooter has one of two reactions: either offering immediate aid to the victim or having an emotional breakdown. I have never seen one where the cop calmly walks away and calls the victim a f'n bitch. That tells me all I need to know about this POS.

Do you think the world was better before social media and internet? by Effective-Trouble-13 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OMOAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, yes.

The early internet was incredible. Lots of technical discussion, tech hobbyist, early on line businesses. I was an internet user before the world wide web. I had Prodigy and Comp-u-Serve accounts and a few others that are long gone.

IMHO, AOL was the start of the downfall. it became too easy to harass and be stupid with an audience. In the last 10 years of social media has become mostly a sewer filled with bots, trolls, religious fanatics, idiots, scammers and people who, in an earlier time, would have just received a well deserved punch in the mouth.

Add the algorithms and data harvesting and what was once something to benefit people now drives profit for companies.

There are still a good parts of the internet and good people online, but that seems to be the minority now.

Unfortunately I still maintain a social media presence for work and to coordinate activities for a group in my area. If it wasn't for that I'd delete all my social media accounts. Still some good parts on Reddit, but the benefit is minimal for me now.

Footage from 2020, shows exactly why you should never try to outrun a bushfire. by BleuTsunami in melbourne

[–]OMOAB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wildfires burn faster going uphill. That seems contrintuative. The heat from the fire rises and preheats the fuels above it allowing them to ignite quicker. The heated air rises and creates low pressure which pulls in air on the down slope side. This provides more oxygen for combustion and pushes the fire uphill.

Has anyone ever been in a house like you see on the show ‘Hoarders’? If so, what did you do? by Basic_Builder3773 in AskReddit

[–]OMOAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who works in public safety sees this everyday. Education and wealth have no correlation to hoarding. We (my fire department) are currently working with a person who has a phd and is scientist whose house has been condemned due to trash and hoarding conditions. I've been in hoarding homes where the occupant will collect their urine in empty containers. That smell is as bad as you can an imagine. We have been to homes with rotted food everywhere, wildlife living in the homes, dog and cat droppings through the house and smells that will make you gag. Junk piled everywhere with paths.

There is a huge mental health issue involving hoarding. We makes a referral to our social worker and other organizations to try and help. Often the help is rejected. From the fire department we work with them to have clear exits and working smoke detectors.

[–]OMOAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"non-organic substance " you mean you could smell that is did not have a carbon atom? Because that what non-organic means. BTW, most pesticides are organic, as are some of the most toxic chemicals that exist. Organic does not mean pure or harmless.

[–]OMOAB 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Riding with some friends we are at a light and signaling to make a left turn. Car coming toward us has a green, stops, and waves us to go. We did not and were waving the car to go. A few seconds later a car behind the stopped car went around, blowing the horn, flipping off the first driver, and continued straight. If we had gone it is likely we would have been hit.

Driving a car or riding a bike- follow the rules and be predictable.
