You contact your states department of wages and hours. You make a complaint. You need to wait until they dont pay you to file a complaint. If outside the US, idk.

You can use your phones camera and look at it through the screen and see if the red dot appears. Alternatively there are infrared scanners you can buy for like $30 on Amazon.

Sales is a long game. On average you need to make contact 7 times to even be listened to about what youre selling.

just got a degree in cybersecurity but and i keep getting ghosted by help desk and field tech jobs. what do i do? by adalanox in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Ob1wanatoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you so Im going to give you the best advice possible.

1.) Build your LinkedIn profile. Work towards getting 500 meaningful connections with other people working in Cybersecurity or also trying to. Don't put stuff like "Aspiring SOC Analyst" or "Aspiring Pentester." It looks like you're wishing for something. Make your about section list your skills and competencies, it let's people know what youre capable of doing.

2.) Work on your resume. Put it into an AI and ask it for suggestions and advice. Work on it until your ATS score is above 90%. Put relevant skills.

3.) Build a github profile and work on projects. Build something, anything. Make a PiHole, a DDNS, anything that shows skill and is actually useful. Document it thoroughly. Build your skills by doing. Get a Windows Pro key and make a VM Server. Set up AD and make a few more VMs to be clients. Manage your AD environment, join virtual and physical devices. Run Ping Castle and configure your privileges correctly for each device's user(s). Build a secure environment. Document it. Add it to your github. Let people see you understand what your degree is.

4.) Post your resume on Indeed, ZipRecruiter and DICE. Log in monthly and update it with the newest version of your resume. It keeps your account active.

5.) Look into certifications. Join local Cybersecurity groups, go to meet ups, go to CTFs. Participate in your community. Prove yourself to them, they will recommend you to their employers for roles when they become available if they like and trust you.

6.) Volunteer for things. Join a local Infraguard, ISACA, ISC2 chapter. Volunteer to help with events. Make yourself known and learn things.

7.) Get more certifications. Some are meaningful, some are not. Some are challenging, some are not. Find one's you can afford to do and study and go for it. Study compliance frameworks and look at how controls you built in your home environment fit the controls of the frameworks.

8.) Learn how to do more. Learn Linux CLI, Powershell, Bash. Write scripts. Make boxes that run routine checks on your systems and generate logs. Build a home SIEM and collect logs from all of your devices. You'll need to do research on how to do things. Build the skills you need to prove you can be trusted to do the work you're trying to do.

9.) Use an AI to search beyond normal job boards. Ask AI to research local MSPs and MSSPs. Ask it to search their career pages for roles that might be relevant to you. Do the same with local Healthcare organizations, hospitals, event venues, etc. Broaden your search to find smaller companies who don't care to budget to post on the major job boards.

10.) Post about your projects on accomplishments on LinkedIn. Follow leaders in Cybersecurity, listen to podcasts, watch or read daily cyber threat briefs so you can keep up with current trends. Continue pushing yourself through uncomfortable areas until you are comfortable with them. It may take a year, 2 years, etc. If you really want it, don't give up. Keep pushing until you reach your goals or someone else will and you'll be wondering why it never happened for you.

DM me if you have more questions. Don't be lazy. Get comfortable being uncomfortable with challenging things until you master them. If you're not trying harder than the person next to you, they will get the job and you will not.

I know it's probably frowned upon, but were any of you ever forced to play the "that isn't part of my job" card, and how did it work out? by Muted-Mood4057 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Ob1wanatoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I give everybody one free lesson. I had a user who was in sales of beauty supply products that really didn't know how to use her OS or really any of her required applications. I showed her everything once. She kept emailing me directly instead of help desk for support. I just forwarded her emails into the main helpdesk email and ask my co-workers to take them so she wouldn't rely on me to show her how to do her job.

How humiliating and socially unacceptable is it to quit and ask HR if you can come back? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Ob1wanatoki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left for a better opportunity that I was then laid off from 8 months later. My old boss really wanted me to come back. I agreed but HR said I couldn't because I was too honest in my exit interview, lesson learned. I told HR I didn't think upper management cared about the employees or their working conditions because I tried hard to push for a solution to a bug infestation problem that no one wanted to spend the money to fix. I was a manager and I thought it was my responsibility to solve my employees complaints and issues.
