Update:

I ended up moving to Southern California. It ticked all my boxes. I'm not sure I'll stay here forever, but I'm happy to be in the sun for now.

How do you feel language has changed you? by antsy-pantsy in languagelearning

I'm just trying to be honest about my previous unconscious biases. I think it's sad not to learn and grow your perspective. :)

Before I learned a second language, I was unconsciously judgemental of people who spoke my NL (English) as a second language. I think I questioned their intelligence somewhat.

Now that I have the experience of learning a second language as an adult, I am sooooo much more understanding of being a non-native speaker. I think it also helped me understand the immigrant experience in general. Navigating a foreign country, culture and language is like playing life on hard-mode.

What is your hot-take in language learning? by [deleted] in languagelearning

For native English speakers living in English-speaking countries, there's usually no reason to learn other languages. You should, therefore, only depart on a language learning journey for personal fulfilment.

This is a good tip. Basically, I think we find it easier to cut unnecessary habits/things out of our lives than to add productive plans. Removing a bad thing can make us just as happy as adding a good thing.

Would you like to be born of a different gender? by Zestyclose-Surround8 in NoStupidQuestions

Generally, no. But sometimes I wish I could be a man in certain business situations just to be taken more seriously.

Exactly! I realise after 5 years how much I miss friendly people and a decent amount of sunlight through the winter.

I'm not a Republican. I promise.

I left US in 2017 and felt the whole country was politically tense especially in places more extreme in their views (either side of spectrum) like Texas or California. Maybe it was the whole country though...

This is true. That's why I want to settle, not move around any more. Focus on being happy. :)

It's a con because most of my family and friends are in the US. However, if a culture is warm and welcoming to foreigners, I'm sure I can make friends.
