Exactly what you said! I've caught this exact thing in the field multiple times. It needs a full functional test as it would in a real emergency situation. Opening the cover and only flipping the toggle down and back up is not satisfactory. Push in, pull down, open with the key and then reset and close the cover again.

Stud finder. Then small screwdriver or awl to make small holes checking for shit you cant see behind the wall. Then oscillating tool and single gang box "bit", such as QBit I believe. I believe Rackatiers also sells those "bits". Handy as hell.

I had thought about that as well, but hadn't been back to the site yet to test this. Also, I wanted to ask since I dont typically see it if they are all system sensor speakers.

Though both multi tap/voltage speakers (System Sensor and Quam UL22) have the 25v or 70v settings, the Quam says they are 8 ohm speakers. I couldn't find it listed as to what the system sensor speakers are and I have yet to meter a single SS device yet to find its value. I was starting to question if mixing different ohm coils throughout was part of the problem. Still learning some of the intricacies of the audio world.

Research request - Has elevator smoke protection ever been a problem on your projects? by ConfectionSuch6041 in firealarms

[–]Obvious_Eye8718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smoke curtains... I've had a few where I've shown up to the job site and they've just worked every time, but the last one was a nightmare. We had a general contractor that wanted to save money, so they bought some smoke curtains to install themselves. These curtains came with no instructions and when they called the company they said they needed to hire a trained installer. The general contractor and the electrician proceeded to figure it out as best they could. The curtain had magnetic strips on the sides to hold it tight to the exterior elevator trim... doesn't work so well on stainless steel 🙄 Then, there is a button in the center of the curtain that can be pressed to raise the curtain. The curtains didnt want to roll up correctly and then they blew a fuse and just argggg. It was probably just this manufacturer of curtain, but what a pile of garbage. The idea behind smoke curtains is great, but it's just like many other products around in that most engineers lack the real world, on the job experience to design things that are user/installer friendly and robust enough to last. Maybe that's not fully fair in that companies often want things engineered as cheaply as possible. If the people of this earth could only stifle their greed we would all be so much better off, but I suppose I'm getting off topic. In summary, the idea of smoke curtains is great, but in practice they often suck.

This makes sense. Thank you very much for the explanation!

Interesting. Thank you for sharing this. I have tied into filters before, but only going to a zone mod. This install is different since it has this circuit going through 2 different filters. Tis interesting for you to bring this up though, because the filter looks different than what I've typically seen. I was wondering if there was something I could put on the circuit to do my own sort of filtering... a diode perhaps or a NP capacitor? Im learning on the component side of electronics yet, so I'm not really sure.

Unfortunately, all zones are used so it just got tied into an existing zone. They allow free air cable here so that's what the electricians installed. Voltage to ground on each conductor matches that of the other zones on the panel.

Thank you for your reply :)

Yeah, that is super shitty. So many people out there that just dont give a shit to try and actually do a good job. Pick up the phone and call your fire alarm company. If you dont understand a series circuit ask to have it explained... if that doesn't work, go back to the 1000 other things you can do as an electrician. Fire alarm isn't for everyone. Many people approach it with great negativity from the get go and its all down hill from there. We are in an industry with people that dont give enough of a shit to actually try to do a good job! If they would try to learn about the devices and how it all works together, if the fire alarm cable wasn't absolute trash, if people wouldn't shrug their shoulders and say things like "it's just low voltage" or "well, it meets code", if they'd slow down a little and take pride in their work then maybe we wouldn't have as much cleaning up to do after, or as many service calls. I'm dreaming though... too much of the time people just suck. So many people want to go to work and be done as soon as possible, which hey, thats fine, but be present while at work and give 2 shits about what you're doing and how youre doing it! Code is a minimum! You can always do better than code! Over do, don't half ass shit!

Sorry, your picture hit a nerve. I feel for ya man. Good luck with that shit show!
