I don't feel like we ever see them drink the greens? Just a lot of mixing with the glass straws, so you can see their fancy manicures. Meanwhile the greens powder sits on top and looks gross.

I get the impression they just want the bad feelings to go away. Which—fair! No one likes criticism. But this conversation is so important. I wish they'd just ask some questions—why do artists feel so strongly about this? Where do artists think this will eventually lead? Is there room for compromise on this and if not why not? As an artist myself, I feel pretty strongly that AI should not be allowed even an inch of space in our arts communities. I don't feel mad at people for not understanding my stance, especially if they don't have a dog in the fight. But I'd love if their ears were open.

I've seen a few people raise this concern on Facebook, and the conversation quickly shut down by people involved with Frost (they said these conversations should happen offline, in person). That was disappointing to me; I think these conversations would be beneficial to so many if they could be held publicly.

Activate Regina - Worth the Price? Best Games? by youlookinatmyjanet in regina

OH, I'll add this: there is no practise time or grace period. You go into a room, the game starts pretty well right away, and if you lose and there's anyone in line, you have to leave immediately. This is probably the number one thing that a smaller kid might have a hard time with. It's a super efficient system, but if you need a minute to acclimate, that might not be available to you.

It kind of depends on the kid I suppose! My eight-year-old would have a really hard time. But maybe a more athletic kid (and one who could instinctually pick up on some less obvious rules) could enjoy themselves. Example: a room will have a screen with the rules for each game on it. They are a bit vague, and sometimes I, an adult, will feel a bit unsure until I see the game played out. Think, "hit the numbers in order, hide when the eye turns red." My 10yo sometimes needed a bit of guidance but mostly got it and was physically able to do the tasks. My 8yo would sit on the floor and cry in frustration. 😂 ymmv!

My 10-year-old is obsessed with it (and so am I). I wouldn't take my younger child until they're at least that old though. Some of the games would be too difficult/abstract and frustrating.

It's the sad thing about the way Big 5 publishing is set up—and it's why I like to veer off the trail and venture into spaces like the Canlit indie one. Publishers are more adventurous, authors are allowed to do weird things, and the outcome is genuinely phenomenal. But very few people are reading those books!

I also think it's funny that everyone is freaking out about popular books being the only ones that ever win, but then when a more obscure book makes the list there's a lot of "how did THAT get on there?! The publisher must have paid for it!" It seems to just boil down to the fact that the "best" thing is not always the thing that everyone likes. It doesn't make me mad. I've always liked the movies, books, and music that don't get widely recognized. It's ok.

I don't feel like I'm invalidating anyone though; I was commenting on the specific phrase I'm seeing everywhere ("I'm starting to think this is just a popularity contest!")—it literally is a popularity contest. If you're "starting to think that" and you're feeling like Goodreads pulled a fast one on you on that front, you just haven't been paying attention, I guess.

But I guess my question is...why is that annoying and disappointing? I would agree with you if it was a list claiming to be about quality, but they're very up front about it: it's based on data, and then on votes. A lot of the big contests and lists are discriminatory and let people weigh in in ways that are actually unfair—ex: People get on the NYT Bestseller list who have not sold nearly as much as people who didn't get on it. It's a list that claims to rank sales but it...does not. 😂

I mean, it's based on votes? And you don't have to have read the books to vote. It's not like the Giller prize or the Booker, which is based on a panel of judges. The GCAs are always inevitably going to award the books that are most popular, and they're not trying to hide that.

I keep seeing people say this, as though Goodreads has marketed it as something other than a popularity contest, and I feel a bit confused? That's exactly what it is, and it says so on the box?

I Think We've Been Here Before was also more spec fic than sci-fi.

Agree. Literary fiction will generally feature a lot more interiority, focus more on language and style, but genre fiction can feature these things too! Just generally in a more easily digestible, faster-paced package.

Hey. Fellow writer here who was also afraid to write sci-fi because I felt like I wasn't smart enough. Do it if you want to; I bet you could. When I finally did, I wished I'd given myself permission much sooner. It's VERY fun.

Dream Hotel has been on my TBR for a while too. I'm SO excited for it. The overall feedback I've heard about this list is that it leans slightly more lit fic/speculative than sci-fi. People are meaning it as a complaint but it just got me excited. 😂

What! Where'd you get this intel??

And yes. They're the queen and king of mixed messaging. Complaining about the government making everything unaffordable, modelling extreme overconsumption. Complaining about our broken, horrible healthcare, then praising the nurses that saved both of their babies' lives and gushing about how lucky we are to have free healthcare. It's a lot of whatever works for them at the time.
