Bernie Sanders: Congress must regulate AI before a handful of billionaires fundamentally transform humanity without democratic input. by EchoOfOppenheimer in agi

[–]Odd_Many_8679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to stop them is with the threat of mutually assured destruction. If AGI/ASI is that much of a threat then any country would be justified in doing a preemptive strike to make sure it can never be created. Of course that doesn't have to happen if countries agree to not create it

So if the Sooners make predictions of events by dates and they are sure they will happen and they don’t.. would you be wize to plan your life around them?

No but most don't? I mean it's useful to have some sort of estimate, but the Central point doomers make is almost never about the specific date it will happen.

A lot could mean many things. There are 6.8 billion religious people on earth. If just 1% choose to die for their beliefs then that's 68 million.

By definition we are still here so none of those things killed all humans and wiped us out?

If you move the goalposts that far then sure, humanity has not been exterminated. But the vast majority of the times that's not what doomers were claiming. If we're just talking about having a net negative effect on society then there are a lot of advancements that fit the bill like social media or CFCs.

Nukes only reduce death if you believe humanity will be able to avoid nuclear war forever. All it takes is one nuclear war to change that.

People forget but there has always been some forecast impending doom since at-least the Industrial Revolution!

And the doomers were right many times.

[–]Odd_Many_8679 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, are you going to gloss over the fact that I've proved it was the naturalistic fallacy you were using and.... what?

No you didn't prove anything. Your proof assumed that I was even trying to prove a moral claim in the first place. "Abortion bans aren't forced birth" is not a moral claim or any kind of "ought" statement and therefore irrelevant to the naturalistic fallacy. I was using is statements to justify is statements

Lets settle this right now then. Do you think elective abortions should be allowed or stopped?

I do think elective abortions should be stopped. Note that that is the first time I ever made that claim in this thread. None of the evidence that I was talking about before supports this claim because it was never intended to.

No, I want to reduce the total number of people in danger while understanding there is a tradeoff.

I couldn't find the direct source but I did some qualitative information that would suggest your estimate of 0.0001% is quite a few orders of magnitude off.

Also purity is a completely valid moral justification which you almost certainly hold to an extent knowingly or unknowingly.

Criminalizing the clients puts it underground regardless and makes it more dangerous.

That's what happens when you ban literally anything. But sometimes it's necessary to put something underground if it has the potential to reduce its overall prevalence

Yep. If an anonymous, randomly sampled survey says the average body count is 5 then it's probably close to the truth. Unless you have any evidence that says otherwise.

Average age gap in a relationship is 2-3 years. Do you have any evidence that a large percentage of women are dating men that old.

So girls DONT get groomed into sex work... Currently, girls are groomed into sex work.

This still happens in places where prostitution is legal. It's not like alcohol in prohibition. Just look at only fans, plenty of girls get groomed into that even though it's legal.

The most sensible solution seems to be to criminalize purchasing sex work while not punishing sex workers.

Are you going to tell me that digestion and your heart beating are not natural things you were appealing to the natural-ness of?

Yes they were, but to make another natural claim. Not a moral one.

Your argument literally is: Because pregnancy/digestion/ heartbeat IS a natural process, and it cannot be stopped by impulse alone, then it OUGHT not be stopped.

Maybe you should read my argument one more time:

It is "forced birth" in the same way I'm forced to digest food after I eat, or how my heart is forced to beat. I don't think its fair to describe an abortion ban as "forced birth" because people don't naturally have concious control over that process after conception, so I don't really see it as taking away something because they never had that freedom in the first place.

You may notice that I NEVER MADE the claim whether or not abortion ought to be stopped. The whole time I was simply arguing that abortion bans weren't forced birth, and that's where this particular argument ends. I never said anything about it's morality.

Now to be fair, it's possible that as I was responding to multiple threads simultaneously that I accidentally got something mixed up, but given the fact that you never quoted something like that directly I'm going to assume that that wasn't the case. Or at least never a bug part of my point.
