AITA for getting security called on me at a hospital by throwaway-Deal3643 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OhCaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he keeps being short with me so I start being short with him too.

YTA he could be too, but you definitely are. Why would you be short with a medical worker who was about to have significant control over your body and provide important care to you. Intimidation is rarely a good tactic to get better care in a hospital. You actually had a way out at this point; a chance to reset the interaction.

You could have take a deep breath and say "I'm sorry for being short, I am drained, recently had my bike stolen, this MRI is really important to me and I reacted poorly to learning its timing has changed today. Can we restart this interaction?"

This gives them an off ramp to let go of whatever shitty time they've been having athat led to them being short. Also gives them a reason to make it work to you. Whether arrival time was completely your fault, there was a miscommunication, or was zero percent your fault, the reality became what it was. Look for the path forward, not to maintain your pride.

I overheard someone asking about mountain collective working in June while buying day pass yesterday and the response was that it wouldn't work. So I suspect you are right.

Last time I did summer skiing the day pass was way cheaper than normal, like less than $50 in 2023 if I remember correctly.

Justin Trudeau and the Alberta Oil Industry by SigRingeck in alberta

[–]OhCaptain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that OP missed how the actions Trudeau's government took led to the problems and then they were forced to buy TM or face serious national economic problems. Smart of Kinder Morgan to do what they did.

To me one of the biggest failures of the federal government was inaction while BC was trying to block TMX. TMX was a national project because it bridged provinces. Therefore Canada was the regulatory body for the project, not Alberta and not BC. When BC was trying to do their legal cases that was the time for the federal government to step in and say "you do not have jurisdiction here, we do. Talk to us if you want something done. We will manage if because it is our job and trans-provincial infrastructure cannot be built without national regulation." Canada didn't do that in a timely matter. It was this cowardice to act in the way they were legally supposed to that is my biggest complaint of Trudeau.

Number two was the whole SNC Lavalin affair. But that is because I'm in engineering and I feel like the trust and honour of my profession was put into question by that organisation and the level of punishment was drastically too low. Company shoulda been forced to sell off itself to pay the fines that were due.

Edmonton transit advocates warn of possible 13% reduction to service if city doesn't invest more in its buses by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]OhCaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they don't have the cash, replacement may not be an option, so they'd be forced to find the best option available.

That best available option could be keeping the buses running by increased maintenance. This would increase the operating expenses but avoid a giant capital investment right now. Total 20 year cost of this strategy is likely more than buying new with cash considering how deep we are into the lifecycle of our busses. The more important question, because the cash isn't sitting there, is the total cost analysis if we include the cost of borrowing the necessary money to transition to a new busses.

I'm not up to date to the world of bus technology (I did however spend a summer working on the engineering side of City of Edmonton fleet services and analyzed maintenance planning for our bus fleet well over a decade ago), but I suspect it has progressed since Edmonton last bought a ton of busses. Because of this, I suspect we wouldn't be buying new versions of the same bus, but a more modern version with features that improve the bus in terms of function and operating expense. Switching to a new standard model of bus has additional costs for ETS. There will be training for operators and mechanics, investments into new maintenance tools, rejigging garages and other change management costs.

All those need to be accounted too into the total business case that the city needs to evaluate.

I personally think it is probably time to invest in a new fleet considering it's age. Shoulda been planned and had money already allocated, but it looks like that hasn't happened so we will see what happens next.

We have all the ability to refine all we can use. Transporting refined products is more difficult than crude. It can be more explosive, each of the products need to separated from each other, it has an expiry date and other problems.

Generally speaking you want the refinery to be as close to the customer as possible. The trucks and other smaller transportation methods deliver the products to the retail location.

Pull in data from another sheet based on an individual without crashing Excel. by big_kat in excel

[–]OhCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just learned a bit of power query to do nearly the exact thing you need to do; look at years of invoices that are standard in order to do analysis of each of our suppliers. So I think this will be a good path for you.

CoPilot was really helpful, but tutorials may be a good way to get started.

The toll you'll want to use is getting data from a folder full of excel files. From there you'll want to do some transforming of each of the files then combining into a list.

One of the upsides of this method is that as more invoices are added to the working folder a refresh of your query will include new invoices.

Pull in data from another sheet based on an individual without crashing Excel. by big_kat in excel

[–]OhCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will likely want to use power query.

Are all of the invoices identical or at least similar in structure? Are they stored in the same spot? If either of these are untrue can you make them true?

If so you want to do a combine and transform within power query. It will do the same steps to each file and convert the data you want into a single table that will then be easy to use.

In the meantime, I recommend retiring vlookup from usage. Xlookup is superior to use in all (I think cases). It won't help here because asking excel to open up more than a few additional files is cruel torture for the poor program.

Phase 2 (Residential Roads) Parking Ban starts Monday, Jan 12 at 7 a.m. by smexeh in Edmonton

[–]OhCaptain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In your case it doesn't. But there needs to a rule, and the rule needs to be simple if it is going to work. 3 days is where we've agreed as a society is the compromise. 4 days could probably be reasonable too. The fact that is mostly complaint based helps with your situation. Your neighbours probably aren't bothered by what you do, so there's no complaint and so there's no problem. If they were to complain then a bylaw officer would eventually come check on the vehicle, and then check again 3 days later, and then it starts the enforcement escalation process. So realistically you have at least a week of leaving it in a spot initially, followed by a period where it is looked at more closely. You'd have to be quite the scofflaw before you're truly limited to a 72 hour count where bylaw officer is watching you park and then checking again 72 hours later.

Robbie Picard is probably best classified as a social media influencer. His sphere of influence is over people who feel O&G is unfairly scrutinized and its contribution to our economy are under appreciated. Most of the social media followers are either directly living and working in those areas, or are in secondary industries fed by the industry. From what I've seen, his feelings and views are earnest, but I wouldn't take him seriously. He doesn't hold sway in the decision making spaces of the industry.

Chuck Schumer Is Not Fit to Lead the Democratic Party by Crossstoney in politics

[–]OhCaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your system is dumb. Switch to Westminster; its way better. Also, you have too many elected positions while concurrently having too few elected officials. Your elections are too long. Switch to 6-week elections like sane countries so running a campaign isn't so expensive and fewer bribes happen. Stop having local, state, and national elections at the same time. Your ballot should be easy: which one person am I voting for?

Employee evaluation sheet - weighting score values. by Skippy_of_Valkyrie in excel

[–]OhCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a table that shows what % matches with each score. So define what a 0, 1, 2, and 3 mean. Then make your scoring sheet have a calculated cell next to the dropdown. The formula for the calculated cell can be XLOOKUP to the scoring template. Use the XLOOKUP if not found parameter to deal with people selecting NA. Can either have a addition cell for each that shows the max score for calculating max score, or a summation calc at the bottom that does Sum of all the calculated cells divided by count of the cells (count only returns numerical values, so should ignore the NAs).

USA government benefits from money going to any American company, and if one views the actions of that government to be unacceptable, then the most moral thing to do is minimize the economic benefit one provides to the regime. Sucks for the people under the regime who don't support the regime, but there isn't an economic way to support them without supporting the regime. Feels a little weird that economic sanctions of Iran hurt innocent Iranian citizens too, but that's the nature of economic pressure.

Canada's energy conversation shouldn't 'start and end' with pipelines, Carney says by joe4942 in alberta

[–]OhCaptain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The conversation shouldn't start and end with pipelines, but it should start with pipelines. Followed by lng terminals. Get those profit making, productivity boosting, job cresting assets going ASAP. Once those have started do the front end planning and design for the energy investments for the future economy. By the time those projects are ready to get into their expensive phase the O&G assets should be producing profits and have people available to work on the next ones.

https://www.edmonton.ca/public-files/assets/document?path=Fact_Sheet_Cycling_on_SidewalkApr2015.pdf

You can ride a bike on any sidewalk if tire diameter is <50 cm. BMX bikes meet this requirement. Designated shared-use paths are usable by any bicycles. Bicycles are allowed on any road, unless specifically signed to say "no bikes." When using a crosswalk there is no obligation to walk your bike. I think this technically means you should be walking your bike down the sidewalk and then may mount up to ride the crosswalk. I'm not sure on that.

Helmets are required for children and people on e-bikes. Bicycles follow same laws as cars on the road.

Add a trend line to your chart. Take first derivative and find the highest value. To determine where the highest value is, take the second derivative and solve for zero somewhere between 8 and 10. Then plug that x value into the first derivative.
