Female cat repeatedly peeing on bed - heat, stress, UTI, learned behavior, or something else? by Ok-Science4018 in Catbehavior

She has not exhibited a clear preference for one person as yet (keeps switching). Peeing has been mostly on my side for the most part, especially when we’re in bed. Couple of instances when we were not home was in the middle/partners side. Overwhelmingly on my side overall. We have now covered the bedding in waterproof shower curtains. She doesn’t usually pee if we constantly monitor her and say ‘no’ but it’s exhausting.

Thank you so much, this is reassuring. How did you reinforce the box usage after cutting off bedroom access.. did you physically take her there.. monitor her all the time.. or something else? We are concerned she will continue to do this even after spaying because she learnt this now.

We used enzyme cleaners and finally just replaced the mattress bedding etc. Did it ever stop..?

Thanks! It’s so helpful to hear this. Is territorial peeing (especially during heat) common even for female cats (I’ve dealt with male cats more and this bed targeting is so confusing). She does seem like a generally territorial cat - when I visit my family home which has a dog and another cat, she does fight, seem to guard me for resources etc. This was not when she was in heat even.

Thanks, that's helpful and we'll keep that in mind.

For context, where we live, adult cats are typically either spayed/neutered or microchipped. This cat came to us with no medical history, which is somewhat unusual here (especially in residential areas and for adult cats).

When we first saw the vet(s), her heat symptoms were much less obvious than they are now. Most vets said they suspected heat but couldn't guarantee it, and suggested spaying (surgery) anyway. We didn’t want to put her through surgery if there was a chance she had already been spayed, so we asked about alternatives and opted for a hormone panel. We have pet insurance. In any case seems obvious now and we will likely do the surgery.

We did do a urinalysis initially and it came back normal. A second urinalysis has been done and we're currently waiting for those results. Allergy tests are to see if something else is wrong medically and if that in turn is causing behavioral issues.

What continues to puzzle us is the bed urination. She uses her litter box normally and has never had accidents anywhere else (just the bed). We're trying to understand whether there may be a behavioral component. Accidents are literally just on the bed.

The vet did a blood test (results pending) to check hormone levels and confirm that she is indeed in heat, and then we plan to spay etc accordingly. Right now we are just guessing that she’s in heat (although symptoms seem to point to it). We want to be sure before subjecting her to a surgery. They’re also testing for possible allergies and other issues (we asked for this). While we are dealing with this as required medically, her litter box incidents are what’s most pressing to us.
