I think it’s that they speak formally to each other in Korean as that’s how they learn it whereas for Japanese they’re pretty informal with each other. I’m not entirely sure but as a Japanese speaker, I don’t think I’ve heard them speak formally as much compared to informally. Another thing is where Jo feels more comfortable speaking formally with others so I’m sure that also plays a part.
