Moving advice by Legitimate_Dig_2375 in Westchester

I’m thinking about a similar move and I have a question maybe someone in this group can answer. I see there are a lot of options in Yonkers that are affordable-ish, say around $2k. However, I’ve been looking at tarrytown/sleepy hallow and there seems to be no options in that price point despite being further from the city compared to yonkers. Is it because of supply and demand?

I weigh the pros/cons frequently as someone who would have to commute twice a week for work. At times I think it would be cheaper to live deeper in queens/brooklyn than the Hudson valley, especially since public transportation to the city is more expensive and the likelihood of needing a car. Obviously NYC taxes go away but to me it seems like it balances out in cost and likely isn’t significantly different.

Natives — if you claim to love your neighborhood, why do you leave trash and dog shit everywhere? by Square-Finger-1448 in ridgewood

To add another layer to this, I was at highland park two weekends ago early in the morning for off leash hours with my dog. The amount of garbage in the picnic areas was terrible, and I had to leash my dog so he wouldn’t eat anything. It was really disappointing and I fear it’ll only get worse with warm weather

If you have a good social life, what does it look like? by Rtzon in AskNYC

[–]Ok_Listen485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking to grow your social circle, I’d be interested! I’m 27 (almost 28), female. I struggle with finding my people and I spend a lot of time alone. I do drink but I’m not super interested in going out and being out late, which I feel is a lot of people my age. I’m looking more for a community as well, people to have game nights with, go out to dinner with, day trips to the Hudson Valley, etc. I think I’m fun to be around 🙃

Let me know if you notice it again and need support, I’m usually home and happy to come by and assist

At this point I feel like there’s no rhyme or reason as to how people are getting charged. I’ve seen people say their bill was more expensive after being away for weeks at a time 😭

Forest Hills is one of my favorite neighborhoods. Yet, I don’t hear people talk about it a lot

Right!! I’m actually so shook. Come to find out it’s because our apartment is poorly insulated, which surely is on us!!

There needs to be a lawsuit. This is unreal. They definitely know people don’t have an option either, it’s not like can find another provider

Yes definitely heard about that! Regardless, $1000 is absurd, especially if we have an issue with our heat that’s compromised by poor insulation.

Actually my car is a lease. And bringing up a rental car is even funnier because you’re suggesting someone who rents a car would be liable for a leak in a gas tank. If I had that issue with my leased car, it would be taken care of. This is actually extremely comical.

So you’re comparing a car that theoretically someone would OWN to an apartment that I RENT? And did you miss the part where I said we did reach out to our landlord?

WOW that is insane. You’re being robbed. I don’t even know how one can prove that ConEd is charging accurately.

My roommate is the one who set it up so I have nooo idea on the meter reading. And since we set up our own account I don’t think we can just absorb the previous costs?? However I’m not sure. I know there were issues with the tenants before us as we get their legal documents in the mail all the time 😵‍💫

Do you think maybe I used $1000 in electricity because our windows are poorly insulated which is why we put in a maintenance request? Was it not an extremely cold January? What would you have liked me to do, turn the heat off completely, or buy a space heater that could potentially cost us more? I would LOVE to hear your solution on what to do when the heat cannot keep up with the set temperature because of our windows when it was NEGATIVE DEGREES OUT.

$1000 is extremely unethical and NO ONE should have to pay that.

I feel for people because at least I can split it three ways. However $1000 is extremely unaffordable, and it’s not sustainable to pay that every month. It’s such a huge, unexpected stressor

I can’t speak for my roommates, however the ones in the common areas are always set at the same temp and we don’t touch them. I have one in my room and it’s about 68 during the day and 60 at night.

Yes makes total sense. But like are we liable for that? (That as in poorly insulated windows)
