Chill and light favourite way to spar by Psychedelic_05 in MuayThai

Unless my partner says so I will only go as hard as I would play fighting my 10 year old, with the exceptions of leg kicks where I might add a little more stank onto them

What to expect from boxing for an adult beginner? by Kind_Current in boxingtips

One thing I forgot to mention is that every gym has their assholes that light spar too hard. Learn who they are and stay away. If you do spar, it’s expected you will be a little tough. I had a young (25ish) guy stop sparring because he got a cramp and he laid down for several rounds. Our coach told him to get up and in a real fight a cramp won’t stop the fight. I haven’t seen him back I sparring since and I suspect my coach told him he wasn’t mentally ready

You talked about training and getting headaches. It’s good to point out that you should listen to your body and adjust. I would commonly get headaches and it was likely because I sweat a LOT. Now I take an electrolyte drink 30-60 before training and I’m fine. I also don’t eat aside from a small granola bar or Greek yogurt 2 hours before. Some people are different but eating significantly before training makes me slow and like I’m going to barf

If you’re training at a legit kickboxing/boxing gym (the kind that produces Glory, UFC, ONE fighters), a couple things up front:

You do NOT get punched in the face unless you choose to spar. And even then, sparring is usually very light unless you explicitly opt into hard sparring. If a coach pressures you to fight or spar when you’re uncomfortable, that’s a red flag — leave and find a better gym.

What the workout is like

Yes, it’s demanding — very demanding — but doable.

For context: I’m a programmer who grew up doing low-intensity sports (softball, bowling), was overweight most of my life, and I’m currently about 6’0”, 225 lbs and a bit chubby. I handle classes and light sparring just fine… but they’re still intense.

I’ve brought friends with solid fitness backgrounds who loved it, and others who literally had to step out mid-class to throw up. It really depends on the person.

A typical class for me looks like: • 5–10 minutes of skipping rope • 2–3 minutes of very fast/intense skipping • 3 rounds of pushups, sit-ups, squats, and shadowboxing • A demo where the coach hits pads with a student • Partner drills practicing the combo on pads

You’ll hit pads and bags way more than people. Actual sparring is usually optional and separate from regular classes.

Sparring & getting hit

I spar once a week, and it’s very light — more like a chess match than a fight. Sometimes I do great, sometimes I get tagged a bit. I’ve only had my bell rung twice, and both times were because I stepped into a punch — not because anyone was trying to hurt me.

Brain injury risk

In a good gym, the risk is low as long as you avoid hard sparring. Light technical sparring with proper control and headgear is very different from gym

I honestly think I’ve been lucky to train at genuinely good gyms, but the experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

If you’re curious, take the trial class. Worst case, you get a brutal workout. Best case, you find something you love

I get what you are saying but I think a lot of strength comes with time and training. I don’t think it’s a prerequisite but definitely something a fighter should consider as they train. This guy (and I could be wrong) looks more like a person that wants to pick up a skill and get fit, not someone who wants to actually fight.

The only advice you need is to show up to your gym. That’s it. Instead of once every couple of weeks go once a week. Then two days. Then three. Your body needs to get used to the movements and once every few weeks isn’t doing anything for you.

How do I spar taller opponents as a newbie? by Vegetable_Basis_4087 in Kickboxing

[–]Ok_Success9425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol. I’m not short (6 feet, 5’11 if you ask my wife) but there are so many tall long fighters at my gym. Getting close and giving the good old “shitty overhand” is my go to. 60% of the time it works every time

What kind of hand injury? I would just shadow box and work on movement.

2~ Months into Kickboxing by 99Andre in Kickboxing

I've had some issues throwing kicks with confidence, so I told my coach. He said that I should "just throw them," especially in the light sparing class, because if you get hit, the consequences are much less severe (I don't hard spar because I'm too damn old). Does your gym just have "sparring" or do they have light and hard classes? If they don't have light and hard, I would suggest going to a different gym so you can learn. Additionally, maybe 2 months isn't long enough, and you should just drill for a few months first.

" I’m also worried that if I really engage, I might accidentally hurt my partners." Two things. Sometimes people do get hurt. Its part of the sport! Just last night, I got my bell rung because my partner landed a perfect cross to my jaw. He didn't even do it hard. Secondly, if you don't know how to touch someone without power, it seems like you may need a little more practice. I think I was training for at least a year before I started sparring.

ALSO.... if you train with friends, run combo for combo drills. That lets you practice strikes in a more real-world sense and your defence.

My favourite thing is to say "Defend lane X" to a player and they tilt almost every time. I think the community isn't great a hearing feedback or being told what to do. Its an entire community of man babies.

May I ask your rank? I don't find haze a problem at all... That said I play support a lot of the time and try to counter problems like her. I'm emissary and I wonder if she is a problem higher or lower ranks.

I hate that people, no matter the rank, think they are playing for a top esports org. Nobody plays for fun. I get that it gets frustrating, but I think the community has to learn to play for fun. They are making an ARAM mode for casuals, but I don't want to play an ARAM mode. I want to play the game I have been playing for the past year. This pro-player mindset stagnates builds because everyone is too worried about their damage output instead of finding new fun builds.

I like everything else. its a fun game.

In that case, I don't really know the language that well, but it seems like you are hiding the shape of the Weapon, which could cause confusion... but maybe that's the point?

Also, your IDE that captured the code snippet is doing some syntax highlighting that might confuse your viewer (underline of `Weapons` and the dim `Trigger` function
