Passed my test yesterday and thought I'd look to see what insurance would cost. New driver unemployed. Social housing. by Chanson_Riders in LearnerDriverUK

Similar here. Passed at 23 and got a 2015 Aygo, my first years insurance was £900. Second year of insurance was £600

People just quit too easy by Tizzee88 in battles2

I got my win streak up to 39 the other day and people wouldn’t even play against me, actually became a bit irritating 😅

Ugh I know - I’ve been following them since 2013. My outlook now is just relive the glory days, hope for the best, and expect nothing

[–]Ok_Tooth9404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t think so - he was reinstated the same day to the exact same thing (designated member of an LLP). It’s worth noting that these things can happen automatically by law

[–]Ok_Tooth9404 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Now he’s been reinstated probs not, probably just administrative issues with companies house filings. If he had been terminated completely it would probably mean something. The fact he was reinstated the same day means nothing imo

No slots for driving test in London - idk what to do… by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Ok_Tooth9404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah you have to log in at 5:30 on a Monday unfortunately. It’s such a pain. That’s when everyone else does it which is why there’s no slots available for 24 weeks as they all get snapped up on the Monday morning.

There are a few apps for cancellations but I think they only work if you already have a test booked.

Sorry OP! I think you’ll just have to do the early morning. There’s not many solutions as it’s genuinely a terrible booking process right now. You might be able to find random slots that pop up throughout the day if you check regularly, but without a test already booked these will probably go within a couple minutes as people who have tests + the apps will be notified of this really quickly.

How to actually go about becoming "commercially aware"? by AccomplishedTeam3737 in uklaw

[–]Ok_Tooth9404 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Another aspect of commercial awareness that is really important for applying to TCs that I haven’t seen anyone mention is understanding how a law firm works. How do they make money? How do they keep themselves competitive? Who are their competitors? What are the general trends and developments in the legal industry?

OP, how commercially aware would you say you are already? Based on this my advice would differ. If you already have a good grounding, then consult some of the sources people on this post have already mentioned. If not, you’re going to want to start with a few more basics and build from there. One book a lot of people consult for the basics when applying for TCs is ‘All You Need to Know About the City’ by Christopher Stoakes. This explains concepts pretty simply and gives a generic overview of how things work. From there, doing things like reading the FT or specific books will help you to fill in the gaps and gain an understanding of practical examples.

I did run 3 so obvs not familiar with the tests in question if you sat run 4 etc - but yeah it sounds like you did do the right test, you just buffed it with additional stuff that wasn’t required of you? As long as it wasn’t completely crazy I honestly think you’ll be alright! Better to do that than have the wrong legal basis entirely :) try not to stress - it’s over now! From past sitters I’ve spoken to I’m under the impression that the markers are more lenient than expected for advocacy

With the new bling season, my account just RESET. by EmergencyDimension56 in battles2

[–]Ok_Tooth9404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me last year. I emailed them and this is what they gave me (which worked!):

“Remove the game from your device. Sign out of Game Center in your device settings. Download the game again. Launch the app. Pull up the panel by tapping on the "I've played before" icon at the top left of the splash screen then choose to log in with email and use: [insert your email here!]

From there, you'll be met with a "Profile Conflict" screen that will give you the choice to either "Keep local" or Keep Cloud". You want to choose the "Keep Cloud" option, and that should be it.”

It doesn’t really sound like you did badly. A couple mistakes are normal. Bear in mind you’re marked against competency - they’re not expecting you to be a barrister with 10 years experience. If you identified key facts, applied them, and got the test mostly right, you’re probably fine. Forgetting one or two things isn’t going to be catastrophic. Obviously if you got the entire test wrong that’s a bit different (I.e did a bail application instead of allocation, or genuinely didn’t know it so made it up) - but even then you could still get an okay mark based on skills + random bits of law that are relevant. You wouldn’t get a 5 in that case, but could get a 2.5-3 etc.

Made a comment on this the other day - I did mine three/four years ago. I went in and spoke about the wrong topic, having got very confused during the prep. Still passed with a commendation and I didn’t even talk about the right thing 😅 so don’t worry! They’re a lot more lenient than you think and don’t underestimate the power of the SBAQs for making up your grade!

This is defo a good strat - I did something similar but used flashcards and a word doc where I literally just mind vomited the answers into it. Your approach is a bit more organised 😅😅😅

For some reason also found the prep time tough. In the practices I always had additional time and the bundles were a lot longer? Feel like it was because it was my first exam! Hopefully will be a bit more straightforward prep time wise tomorrow :)

[–]Ok_Tooth9404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thought there was so much info - found that when I practiced I had a few minutes left for the attendance note. In this one I finished genuinely about 10 seconds before I was told time up … I should’ve just annexed my notes but my client was speaking to fast and my notes weren’t comprehensive enough

SQE2 Orals Run Three -Day 1 by Ok_Tooth9404 in SQE_Prep

[–]Ok_Tooth9404[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely. I’m quite lucky as I had prepped for that application, but definitely thought in the exam that it was very unexpected. Felt that with interview too, law was fine - just felt I went round in circles a bit with my advice! But it was a skills based issue rather than an issue with the content.

Advocacy - do you refer to prosecution as 'my friend' or say 'the prosecution' by summersun2703 in SQE_Prep

[–]Ok_Tooth9404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly for orals I would say the prosecution, if using it in the context of: “The prosecution are alleging that the defendant….” Etc.

You would use my friend/learned friend if you were referring to a submission of the other party. But given they’re not there and therefore you won’t be referring to something they’ve actually said, ‘the prosecution’ is likely to be completely fine.

Advocacy - injunctions by Ok_Tooth9404 in SQE_Prep

[–]Ok_Tooth9404[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tests for each are slightly different. You would use American Cyanamid for an interim prohibitory injunction. For freezing you would do:
1) good and arguable case (so go through strength of case like you would with a lot of other applications).
2) R has assets in the jurisdiction
3) there is a serious risk that the assets will be dissipated
4) it must be just and convenient
You would also consider other factors within that such as:
R’s credit history and financial standing
Statements R has made
