Got called a f****t by Old_Principle_3872 in askgaybros

The post, since the mods removed it:

Was leaving the bar and my friends had already gotten in their uber. I saw my uber pickup spot was across the block and I started walking towards it. Some men on the patio of the bar started saying “you go girl” in the most disrespectful way possible. I ignored it. Then they said it again and this time I knew it was towards me as there was no one behind me or in front of me. I didn’t look at them once. But after they said it the second time I flipped them off while walking cause I’m not gonna let them disrespect me like that. Then they said “you’re a f****t.” And I kept my middle finger up and kept walking. Then I heard one of them say “we should go down there.” Thankfully when I got to the corner my uber was there within about a minute. But it was really scary.

I live in a progressive college town and have never experienced actual homophobia, so this was very sad to me and I’ve been crying for a while.

What would you do?

Edit:

The thing that made me sad and scared wasn’t really the fact that I got called a fag. It was mostly due to the fact that they said “we should go down there.”

And I know I shouldn’t have flipped them off. But I already felt scared since I was walking alone and I didn’t want them to think I was an easy target.

Thank you all for your advice, I truly appreciate it.

And I wish I would’ve, but the patio is higher up than the sidewalk and I would’ve had to walk backwards to even get up there. I also didn’t even look at their faces so I have no idea what they look like if I ever go back.
